| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 5-Oct-13 07:30pm Even though John Cranko is South African, he counts as one of the most significant English choreographers of the 20th century. Furthermore, he is a central figure in German ballet history – after all, he contributed greatly to the fact that Germany returned to the forefront of the ballet world in the 1960s. In particular his version of Romeo and Juliet, created in 1962, directed the eyes of the ballet world back to the "Dance Country Germany" after it had been the catalyst of "Ausdruckstanz" and Modern Dance during the first third of the 20th century.
Cranko's Romeo and Juliet is told in the most clear and concise way, making explanations in the program book almost completely redundant. In his choreographic handwriting, each movement resembles an emotion. It is purely classical, but combines different styles and influences: from the near acrobatic virtuosity of the soviet ballet to the subtle elegance of the English style. This mixture is especially evident in his pas de deux between lovers. Ever since 1968, the ballet has been in the repertory of the Bavarian State Ballet. Every new generation of audiences and dancer alike is enchanted and devastated by the drama of this piece.

| Deutsche Oper, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 35, Berlin, Germany Saturday 5-Oct-13 07:30pm In Italian language with German Surtitles. “Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate” – Take flight, thought, on golden wings”. When those words first rang out in the Milan Scala on 9th March 1842, sung by the Hebrew slaves chorus in the third act of NABUCCO, Giuseppe Verdi's new opera, the master was making history. The “Slaves Chorus” was quickly adopted as the unofficial national anthem of a not-yet-unified Italy and the hopes of a generation of opera-goers were suddenly vested in the young composer. The dramatic tale of Israelite subjugation under the Babylonian yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar remains one of Verdi's best-known operas and was last staged at the Deutsche Oper Berlin by Hans Neuenfels 13 years ago. In Verdi's anniversary year the material is now being rendered by Keith Warner, one of the big names in international opera. The Englishman has directed LOHENGRIN at the Bayreuth Festival and THE RING OF THE NIBELUNG at Covent Garden and more recently for the Copenhagen Opera. Set in the same period that the piece was written, a time of transition from feudalism to a bourgeois, industrialising society, Warner's NABUCCO focuses on the opposing natures of two nations – the modern Hebrews, whose culture is informed by a script and by education as a democratic ideal, and the militaristic Babylonians, whose concept of a state is founded in autocratic rule. | Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 110, 10625 Berlin, Germany Saturday 5-Oct-13 07:30pm Caravaggio Caravaggio, born Michelangelo Merisi, has entered history due to his paintings of dramatic intensity. Caravaggio used to venture the threshold beyond the pale throughout his life. He was seen for admiration of his work and harsh opposition towards his extraordinary realism in painting human beings. Due to his passionate personality, he encountered more than several conflicts with people around him, sponsors, and the law. One of his foremost artistic twists was the extreme contrast between brightness and darkness, light and shadow.
Music by Moretti, Bruno (b. 1960)/Monteverdi, Claudio (1567-1643) Choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti Mauro Bigonzetti is one of the leading choreographers of the Italian ballet which freed itself from the predominance of mainly classical opera companies in the 80’s. He created his choreographies mainly for the Aterballetto in Reggio Emilia that helped him to fame and worldwide attention. “When I think of Caravaggio, I think of the artist and the human being at the same time. These are the two sides of the human existence that interest me in particular. The relations of these two worlds are the inspiration for this work: the inner world on the one hand – and how it evolves artistically on the other.” Mauro Bigonzetti has developed the piece CARAVAGGIO in collaboration with the Staatsballett Berlin.

This virtuoso piece will be framed by two other Russian works, Mussorgski’s “Night on a Bare Mountain” and Stravinsky’s fantasy-rich music for the ballet “The Firebird”, a pioneering work of the early twentieth century, with which the composer revolutionized ballet music.

Royal Academy of Music, Duke's Hall, LondonRoyal Academy of Music / Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series |
|
![]() | ||
| Royal Academy of Music, Duke's Hall, London, Marylebone Road, London NW1 5HT, United Kingdom Sunday 6-Oct-13 12:00pm Royal Academy of Music / Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’ is a late-comer to the main body of Bach’s cantatas. Bach performed it at Leipzig on the fourth Sunday after Trinity, 1732, reviving it ten years later. This is a chorale-based cantata in which the hymn’s unaltered text appears, verse by verse in each movement. Only the movements which frame the work are treated chorally, the intervening verses being assigned to soloists. These are well-contrasted arias for alto with continuo, soprano with obbligato oboe da caccia and tenor with obbligato violin and bassoon. ‘Der Friede sei mit dir’ bucks any known trend in Bach’s cantata production. To all intents and purposes it is a work for solo bass, though in the second movement Rosenmuller’s beautiful chorale melody is sung by soprano. No definite date of composition is known though the mid to late 1720s seems a likely hypothesis. No autograph is preserved but surviving manuscript copies indicate that the piece was intended both for the third day of Easter and for the Feast of the Purification. It has been suggested that this short cantata is only a fragment of what might have been a work of greater substance. Bach performed his cantata ‘Meine Seel erhebt den Herren’ at Leipzig in July 1724 on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its text is based on Luther’s German version of the Latin Magnificat. Unlike his well-known Latin Magnificat (BWV 243), Bach’s cantata includes recitative as well as arias and chorally treated movements. Its tautly constructed opening chorus is declamatory in character and incorporates the ‘tonus peregrinus’ plainchant melody. A splendidly robust bass aria, full of theatrical gesture, breaths the air of the opera house, as Bach paints a picture of the temporal mighty hurled from their seats into the sulphurous pool of the text. Each cantata concert begins at midday and lasts around one hour. The Academy’s restaurant will be open for light refreshments from 10.30am until the start of each concert. | ||

| Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 6-Oct-13 03:00pm Smart performs Britten There’s an inspiring mix of beautiful classics to be enjoyed during the RTWSO’s 92nd season, and you can experience six afternoons of unforgettable music-making. Benjamin Britten was the 20th century’s consummate musician. To celebrate his centenary, this opening concert features two of his pieces. Matinées Musicales is a witty reworking of Rossini, which revels in dance rhythms and demonstrates Britten’s tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Callum Smart will perform Britten’s Violin Concerto. This early work represents a real milestone in the composer’s development. The orchestral sound is assured, the solo writing brilliant and idiomatic, and the cumulative impact considerable. Berlioz was driven by a musical vision that went beyond his time. Unrequited love, opium, suicide, the guillotine and a monstrous Witches’ Sabbath are among the lurid ingredients of his Symphonie Fantastique, a work of vast imagination and originality. Here is theatre in symphonic form. Sponsored by Greenbank Wealth Management. | ||

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 6-Oct-13 07:00pm Wozzeck – a good man, who just wants to live his life. But the world around him strikes him down. It preys on his thoughts and triggers horrible anxieties in his soul. He struggles for words to explain himself, until his own utterance falls apart. Not even the woman he loves can understand him and becomes more and more alienated from him. Driven by the struggle to exist and unspeakable fear, pursued by the violence of his perverse fellow humans who feast on his terror, this Wozzeck hustles through life like a hunted animal until he can no longer endure the pressure and destroys his beloved and himself.
In the year of its creation, 1836, Georg Büchner’s drama, already pointed the way to the modern era with its terse, analytically sharp and ironic language. Some 80 years after it had come to be, on the eve of the First World War. Alban Berg discovered the fragment, which was all that remained of the play. Struck by the quintessential catastrophe of the “Wozzeck affair”, he created a score unique in the annals of 20th century music theatre to lament the loss of fallen mankind and a world on the brink of decay. Stage director Andreas Kriegenburg tells of how life can turn into a horrifying nightmare from which there is no awakening, and in which the dreamer himself finally becomes a monster.
