Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors

Thomas Adès Darknesse Visible
Britten Quartet No.3 Music from the English Renaissance explodes into fragments in Adès’ solo piano piece illuminating Dowland’s lute song, ‘from the inside’. Memories of the past similarly inspire the ailing Britten’s last chamber work: Venice – a place of deep consolation for him and echoes of the opera Death in Venice merge with, inevitably, the spectre of death itself. The work’s calm resignation and gently rocking finale is a poignant farewell. ‘I wanted the work to end with a question.’, said the composer.

Two new short operas from South Africa and Sweden premiere in Stockholm, before travelling to Cape Town “All is a procession. The universe is a procession with measured and perfect motion.”.
In 2010, CTO’s hugely popular Five:20 – Operas Made in South Africa initiative assembled five newly commissioned works by local composers and librettists. Now the project goes international in an exciting North-South collaboration, as CTO teams up with Stockholm’s University College of Opera to present a pair of cutting-edge thirty-minute operas. Swedish composer Carl Unander-Scharin brings his innovative use of technology in performance to a setting of Walt Whitman’s I Sing the Body Electric, while Philip Miller creates a haunting exploration of the realities of working underground in a mine in Between a Rock and a Hard Place: A Dictionary of a Mining Accident.

| Latvian National Opera, Riga, Riga LV-1050, Latvia Friday 14-Jun-13 07:00pm As in the previous season, the Latvian National Opera will continue the popularization of Latvian opera music. Andris Dzenītis is one of the most talented, multi-faceted and internationally successful new Latvian composers. The main character of his new opera is an archetypal hero forever searching for the end of the horizon, walking a path that forever runs through ectasy and catasrophe. In this take on the story, Dauka is no longer a naive child, but an adult, who leaves materialistic society behind only to be met with unsurpassable resistance in his challenging adventures in the vast spirit world. Poet Kārlis Vērdiņš’ libreto is based on the classic children’s tale by Sudraba Edžus, interweaving modern timbral and textural discoveries with a viscerally Latvian feeling. | ||

| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Friday 14-Jun-13 07:00pm Following the success of the Prague première of Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart was immediately commissioned to write another opera. This time, Lorenzo Da Ponte chose the story of the Spanish nobleman Don Juan. The subject matter had been considered a crowd-puller for more than a century, due in particular to the spectacular demise of the hero. Don Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore, whom he has murdered, to dinner, and is swallowed up by the jaws of hell. However, the view of the hero had changed considerably since the Spanish dramatist and monk Tirso de Molina first brought the blasphemous deeds and just punishment of the villain to the stage in the 17th century. While de Molina was still entirely on the side of order, which is ultimately re-established through divine intervention, Mozart and Da Ponte turn the sexual braggart and seducer into a man whose unquenchable thirst for happiness calls into the question the very foundations of social coexistence. Don Giovanni thus becomes – involuntarily and perhaps even without realising it – a danger for the social order, which can be maintained only if it functions smoothly. In their comedy, which is shrouded in darkness throughout, Mozart and Da Ponte do not conceal the price that others have to pay for this kind of self-realisation. However, since they do not pass any final judgement and instead do justice to both sides, their work becomes a drama of humanity of indestructible power and relevance – a dramma giocoso that becomes all the more comic the more the tragic aspects behind the course of events become apparent.
The much-vaunted German director Sebastian Baumgarten will present his interpretation of Don Giovanni in Zurich. At the rostrum will be the young Robin Ticciati, a rising star among the new generation of conductors. Our Don Giovanni is the charismatic Peter Mattei, who is sought-after in this role from the Scala in Milan to the New York Met.In Italian with German and English surtitles.Robin Ticciati, Conductor Sebastian Baumgarten, Director Barbara Ehnes, Set Designer Marina Rebeka, Soprano: Donna Anna Julia Kleiter, Soprano: Donna Elvira Anna Gorbachyova, Soprano: Zerlina Peter Mattei, Baritone: Don Giovanni Pavol Breslik, Tenor: Don Ottavio Rafal Siwek, Bass: The Commendatore Ruben Drole, Baritone: Leporello Lukas Jakobski, Bass: Masetto

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 14-Jun-13 07:00pm Illusions - like Swan Lake Music by Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich (1840-1893) Choreography by John Neumeier …Silence. An empty room in a gloomy castle. Scattered throughout the room, concealed sculptures fill the empty space. Shown in by reverent guards, a man stares into nowhere. The gate slams shut behind him. Gradually, the king begins to grasp – imprisoned and deprived of power – his situation, his surroundings. In an introverted gesture, he places his hand on his heart… the music meets his lament with the first notes of Swan Lake...
The premiere of llusions – Like Swan Lake was a celebrated success of the Ballet Festival Week of 2011. Finally, John Neumeier’s ballet about the fairy tale king had been brought to its original setting.
Illusions is a Royal thriller with traditional folklore dancing, complete with a good dose of local Bavarian color. The ever-present reference to one of the greatest works in ballet history becomes most apparent in the second act, where Lew Iwanow’s original choreography is integrated: “The reconstruction of a golden hour of St. Petersburg ballet history, elaborate stage design magic supported by the captivating musical score. Most of all, it is a ballet drama that touches us right at the core because of its soulful, vivid characters, instead of showcasing lifeless swans and princes.”Image credit: Charles Tandy

| Chester Town Hall, Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HJ, United Kingdom Friday 14-Jun-13 07:30pm Michelangelo Drawing Blood By Charlie Barber A new chamber opera/performance piece conceived by composer Charlie Barber in collaboration with choreographer Andy Howitt and film maker Barnaby Dicker. Inspired by Michelangelo’s sketchbooks, sonnets and figure studies, this integrated work of music, physical theatre, film and photography uses as a starting point Michelangelo’s own concept of ‘releasing’ a sculpture, and explores the process of creativity and creation. Through a series of a dozen scenes – episodic, real and imagined – the work contrasts Michelangelo’s conception of creativity and divine vision with his own internal struggles. Barber’s music is scored for countertenor voice accompanied by a range of period instruments (theorbo, viola da gamba, recorder, dulcimer and percussion.) Please note the production contains nudity | ||

His most personal work to date, DESH has been declared “a masterpiece” (The Observer) and won an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. Meaning “homeland” in Bengali, DESH draws on multiple tales of land, nation and resistance, all converging in the body and voice of one man trying to find his balance in an unstable world. Moving between Britain and Bangladesh, Khan weaves threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world of surprising connection. In a collaboration of extraordinary proportions, Khan joined forces with visual artist Tim Yip (production designer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), award-winning lighting designer Michael Hulls, writer and poet Karthika Nair, Olivier Award-winning composer Jocelyn Pook and slam poet PolarBear.

| The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Friday 14-Jun-13 07:30pm Two unspoken themes run throughout Britten’s much-admired opera: the impossible passion that a troubled writer forms for a fellow hotel guest, and the cholera epidemic which the authorities are all too keen to hush up. In Death in Venice, Britten revisits the subject of corruption of youth and innocence that so fascinated him and delivers a haunting theatrical experience of consummate power.
Deborah Warner’s production of Britten’s final opera celebrates the composer’s centenary year and reaffirms ENO’s position as the world’s leading producer of his operas. This production reunites award-winning director Warner with ENO Music Director Edward Gardner, who returns to Britten following ENO’s productions of Billy Budd (2012) and Peter Grimes (2009), for which his conducting was described as ‘deeply musical’ (Financial Times).
