| Aldeburgh Box Office, 152 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AQ, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 The Borough Punchdrunk Theatre Company and its artistic director Felix Barrett are pioneers in a highly individual form of theatre, focusing as much on audience members and the surroundings as the performers and the narrative. Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors | ||

| Chester Town Hall, Northgate St, Chester CH1 2HJ, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Recital “Guzzo’s technique was immaculate, and his Szymanowski was also stylish and driven. He ripped through the cadenza with terrific verve and left me wanting to hear much more from him”. Andrew Morris, classicalsource Twenty-six year old violinist and leader of Ensemble Deva Giovanni Guzzo is rapidly rising as one of the leading performers of his generation. Born in Venezuela to parents of Italian and Venezuelan heritage, he continues to captivate audiences around the world with his unique and passionate approach to his performances. Following his solo debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London earlier this season, critics described him as a wonderfully “magnetic” and “commanding” performer. Having started his musical studies with the piano at the age of five and violin at the age of six under the teachings of Emil Friedman and Luis Miguel Gonzales, he became the youngest violinist to win 1st prize at the XII National Violin Competition “Juan Bautista Plaza” in Venezuela with only 12 years of age. A keen recitalist and chamber musician, Giovanni has worked closely with some of today’s leading musicians such as Maxim Vengerov, Martha Argerich, Joshua Bell, Martin , Daniel Hope, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Gábor Takács-Nagy, the Maggini and Takacs Quartets, Gerhard Schulz, Mats Lidstrom, Colin Carr, to name but a few. His talent has been recognised with numerous awards including Her Majesty the Queen’s commendation for Excellence, Gold medal at the Marlow Music Festival 2006, HRH Princess Alice’s Prize, PROMIS award given by the London Symphony Orchestra, finalist at the YCAT (Young Concert Artists Trust) competition and the Manoug Parikian and Myra Hess award. Giovanni has performed on several occasions for the Royal Family, most recently performing for Her Majesty the Queen on the famous ‘Viotti ex-Bruce’ Stradivarius violin (one of the most precious Stradivarius violins in the world). He appears regularly in live television and radio broadcasts, most recently on BBC’s Radio 3 performing the Mendelssohn Violin concerto. He was also the youngest musician ever invited to perform a solo recital at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland), in front of world leaders and some of today’s most influential personalities. A protégé of the renowned French virtuoso violinist Maurice Hasson, Giovanni was granted a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, from where he graduated with the highest honours. He previously studied with the famous pedagogue Zakhar Bron at the “Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia” in Madrid. Giovanni continues to perform as soloist in some of the most prestigious venues around the world, including the Wigmore hall and Zurich Tonhalle, and is a regular guest at Music Festivals such as the Verbier festival in Switzerland, Schloss Cappenberg and Mecklenburg festivals in Germany He is the leader of the Manchester Camerata Orchestra and principal Guest leader of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Giovanni Guzzo plays on a 1709 Antonio Stradivarius Violin, kindly on extended loan to the Manchester Camerata by Philanthropist Jonathan Moulds; and a bow by T. Baker awarded to him by J&A Beare. £10 | ||

| Sadler's Wells: Peacock Theatre, London, Portugal Street, Holborn, London WC2 2HT, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 07:30pm ZooNation Dance Company — Some Like It Hip Hop ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop has been a runaway success since it hit the Peacock Theatre in 2011, wowing audiences and prompting widespread critical praise with five-star reviews and standing ovations. After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent. | ||

| The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 07:30pm Puccini’s gift for writing emotional music is brought to the fore in La bohème’s tale of doomed love in poverty-stricken Paris. One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta.
Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration. Playing Mimì is Kate Valentine, who in recent seasons has played the Countess in Fiona Shaw’s production of The Marriage of Figaro and an ‘excellent’ (The Times) Helena in Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Gwyn Hughes Jones returns to the role of Rodolfo following his great success in ENO’s 2010 production, and recent acclaimed Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly.Jonathan Miller, Director Natascha Metherell, Revival Director Isabella Bywater, Set Designer Gwyn Hughes Jones, Tenor: Rodolfo Kate Valentine, Soprano: Mimì Richard Burkhard, Baritone: Marcello Angel Blue, Soprano: Musetta Andrew Craig Brown, Bass: Colline Duncan Rock, Baritone: Schaunard Simon Butteriss, Bass: Benoît | ||

| Sadler's Wells, London, Rosebery Avenue,, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 07:30pm Akram Khan Company — DESH Akram Khan’s full-length contemporary solo DESH made its world premiere in 2011 to unanimous critical praise and has since enjoyed a triumphant return run at Sadler’s Wells. His most personal work to date, DESH has been declared “a masterpiece” (The Observer) and won an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production. Meaning “homeland” in Bengali, DESH draws on multiple tales of land, nation and resistance, all converging in the body and voice of one man trying to find his balance in an unstable world. Moving between Britain and Bangladesh, Khan weaves threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world of surprising connection. In a collaboration of extraordinary proportions, Khan joined forces with visual artist Tim Yip (production designer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), award-winning lighting designer Michael Hulls, writer and poet Karthika Nair, Olivier Award-winning composer Jocelyn Pook and slam poet PolarBear. | ||

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-Jun-13 07:30pm Guy Barker: That Obscure Hurt An expat businessman voyages back to London to sell his Soho jazz club, but while spending a final night there he is stopped in his tracks by meeting the ghost of his younger self…Britten wrote two operas based on ghost stories by Henry James: The Turn of the Screw and Owen Wingrave. Jazz trumpeter and composer Guy Barker, working with author Robert Ryan, takes the completion of a James ghost story trilogy as his starting point for an ambitious new work. From Ryan’s adaptation of James’ short story The Jolly Corner, which weaves both jazz and echoes of Britten operas into its colourful fabric, Barker creates a new, 70-minute suite for the massive combined forces of jazz and symphony orchestras, taking the audience on a taut and dramatic journey. Co-commissioned by Aldeburgh Music and BBC Radio 3, part of Aldeburgh Music’s Inspired by Britten series. ‘cinematically evocative contemporary jazz’ - The Guardian on Guy Barker and Robert Ryan’s Mozart-inspired collaboration, The Amadeus Project Pre-performance talk Guy Barker, Robert Ryan and Andrew Kurowski Peter Pears Recital Room 6.30pm.
