| Aldeburgh Box Office, 152 High Street, Aldeburgh IP15 5AQ, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 The Borough Punchdrunk Theatre Company and its artistic director Felix Barrett are pioneers in a highly individual form of theatre, focusing as much on audience members and the surroundings as the performers and the narrative. Lines between spaces, performer and spectator blur to create an unforgettable experience. This version sets the story somewhere between George Crabbe’s poem The Borough and Britten’s masterpiece, Peter Grimes. It will take audience members on individual theatrical journeys around Grimes’ town, following in his footsteps and hearing Britten’s score. Open air: Outdoors | ||

| Charlton House, London, Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Recital - Soprano and Piano Soprano Cheryl Coutinho was born in Poole, England and is of Goan/Portuguese extraction. She recently finished studying for her master’s degree in vocal performance at Trinity College of Music where she was awarded a Gladys Bratton and TCM Trust Scholarship. Cheryl studies voice with Paula Anglin.
Ms. Coutinho performed as Kay Amin, the wife of president Amin in scenes of a new opera, The Last King of Scotland by Stephen McNeff. This was performed at the Royal Opera House, Linbury Studio Theatre, Covent Garden in February 2012.
Cheryl has also toured in Switzerland where she performed a new work by composer Duncan Ward for soprano and brass in concert with the Meridian Brass Ensemble. This particular collaboration has also taken place at the Royal Festival Hall South Bank and at the PAW Festival in Swanage. Other concert performances include El Amor Brujo with conductor Jonathan Tilbrook and the Nottingham Orchestra; A Night of Spanish Song with the Iberian Quintet at the Peacock Theatre; and as a soloist in Mahler’s 2nd Symphony.
Very much at home in the operatic repertoire, Cheryl’s dramatic performances include Mimì (La bohème), First Lady (The Magic Flute), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), Casilda (The Gondoliers), the Countess (The Marriage of Figaro) and Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw – Trinity Opera Scenes).
Last year, Cheryl was a semi-finalist in the Trinity College of Music Soloist Competition and this year was a finalist in Trinity’s French Song Competition. Other competitions she has taken part in include Bournemouth Music Festival Competition, New Milton Music Festival Competition and Bournemouth Evening Echo National Competition.
Ms. Coutinho has sung in many master classes with artists such as Simon Keenlyside, Rosalind Plowright, Jonathan Peter Kenny, and Rita Susovsky. She is also a member of the Trinity College of Music Mentor Scheme at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House and has had the opportunity to shadow many rehearsals and music calls with Willard White, Roberto Alagna and Nina Stemme, among others.
Ffinian Jones began learning the piano at the age of eight and his natural ability soon became evident. He was invited to study performance, composition and history at the Staffordshire Musical Society for talented musicians, and by the age of 15 had already been awarded ABRSM Grade 8 distinction in the piano, cello and alto saxophone. He went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. A year later Ffinian was successful in gaining a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied piano with Murray McLachlan. After his sixth form studies at Chetham’s, he entered Trinity College of Music in London as an undergraduate to study with Philip Fowke, and from September 2009 to January 2010 studied at the Conservatoire National et Superior de Music et Dance de Lyon, France, with Florrent Boffard as part of the Erasmus scheme.
Throughout his career he has participated in many master-classes given by distinguished musicians including Leslie Howard, Anton Kuerti, Phillipe Cassard, Noriko Ogawa, Alexander Ardakov, Mikhail Kazakevich, Deniz Gelenbe, and Douglas Finch. He was also invited to play Ronald Stevenson’s Peter Grimes Fantasy to the composer, who was himself a personal friend of Benjamin Britten.
Ffinian is a keen chamber musician and has formed a long standing duo with Soprano Cheryl Coutinho. The duo focuses mainly on the French and German repertoire and give regular concerts across the UK.
Ffinian's many competition successes include being finalist in the 2008 Il Circolo Competition, winner of the 2010 Trinity College John Ireland Competition, and soloist in Messiaen’s La Ville d’en Haut, held at Blackheath Halls, 2008. Recent appearances have included a performance of Graham Fitkin’s Sciosophy at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, a solo recital at St. Martin in the Fields, and a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.11, K413 with the Gibbs quartet in Greenwich, London. He was also invited to contribute to a discussion on Liszt in a live interview on BBC Radio 3. He is currently working as a freelance pianist Liszt, Franz (1811-1886), Années de Pèlerinage, Troisième Année: Les jeux d'eaux à la villa d'Este, S 163 no. 4 Price type: Free

| Latvian National Opera, Riga, Riga LV-1050, Latvia Friday 7-Jun-13 05:00pm Siegfried, the third opera of Richard Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen tetralogy, has all the ingredients of a gripping fairy tale: A naive hero grows up deep in the forest without parents. Not yet knowing what fear is, he kills the dragon Fafner and wins not only the magical ring which has the power to rule the world, but also Brinnhilde, the Valkyrie who sleeps on a mountain top surrounded by an impenetrable wall of fire. Wagner’s music, a sublime web of leitmotifs, is as emotionally rich as it is dramatically thrilling.
“Siegfried is a story about power and the battle for it. Being one of our most quintessential quests, it is always relevant, and never more relevant than today. Siegfried is specially trained and nurtured with one specific aim—as an instrument for acquiring power. However, the power of childishness and nature has survived in Siegfried, and that is what makes this character so fascinating,” says Viestur Kairish.Image credit: (c) Gints Mālderis

| New Palace Sanssouci: Palace Theatre, Potsdam, Sanssouci Park, Am Neuen Palais, 14469 Potsdam, Germany Friday 7-Jun-13 05:00pm Peter's Wedding: Premiere Sung in Danish with German supertitles Since he was Prince Henry’s Hofkapellmeister (court conductor) in Rheinsberg, Johann Abraham Peter Schulz was a highly esteemed person in Prussia’s musical scene. Having been appointed royal Kapellmeister (conductor) he moved to Copenhagen in 1787. His inspiring work and his achievements in terms of musically educating the people cannot be valued highly enough. As a "song man of the people" he wanted to speak to the people with an art that takes the art out of art. With his musical comedy "Peters Bryllup" (Peter’s Wedding) he succeeded to the extent that the Danes fully adopted his tunes as their own and the term "national" Danish music was used for the very first time. Thomas Thaarup’s scenes depicting the lives of simple farmers and seamen offer slices of realism despite the idyllic setting. Topics such as the trade in slaves and the abolishment of serfdom were quite explosive. At Palace Theatre Sanssouci L’ARTE DEL MONDO return the delightful piece to the stage for the first time ever as part of their "Opera from the world’s archives" season which was initiated by Bayer Kultur. Coproduction with L’ARTE DEL MONDO and Bayer Kultur, supported by the Capital City Potsdam, the State of Brandenburg, the Artfoundation NRW and the Ministry of Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sports of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia; in cooperation with Copenhagen Opera Festival

| Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, Waterlooplein 22, Amsterdam, Netherlands Friday 7-Jun-13 05:30pm In his only comic opera, Wagner distilled poetry and music into a single unified form that unfolds as an unbroken stream of music-dramatic dialogue. It became a singspiel, partly based on personal experience, about the romance between the bourgeois girl Eva Pogner and the knight Walther von Stolzing, who may only wed his beloved once he has won the annual singing contest. The cobbler Hans Sachs represents, on the one hand, the old guard as a member of the Guild of Mastersingers; on the other hand he is open to modernization and stimulates the knight’s artistic gifts, stoking the conflict between narrow-mindedness and true artistry – a theme certainly not unfamiliar to Wagner himself. Love triumphs in the end, thanks to Sachs’ closing address in which he praises the ‘master’s honour’, a typically German honour one might view with considerable scepticism: the Meistersinger finale was, after all, misused for political purposes.Running time 5 hours 25 minutes with two intervals, in German with Dutch and English surtitles.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Marc Albrecht, Conductor David Alden, Director Thomas Johannes Mayer, Bass: Hans Sachs Alastair Miles, Bass: Pogner Pascal Pittie, Tenor: Kunz Vogelgesang Mattijs van de Woerd, Baritone: Konrad Nachtigall Adrian Eröd, Baritone: Sixtus Beckmesser Thomas Oliemans, Baritone: Fritz Kothner Brian Galliford, Tenor: Balthasar Zorn Roberto Saccà, Tenor: Walther von Stolzing Ana Maria Martinez, Soprano: Eva Sarah Castle, Mezzo-soprano: Magdalene Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest Koor van De Nederlandse Opera Marcel Beekman, Tenor: Ulrich Eisslinger | ||

The Orlando Consort’s programme of music from 1250 to 1550 features beautiful religious works and lively secular pieces that document all aspects of food, including feasting, shopping, recipes and table manners. Their culinary journey takes them from medieval France to early renaissance Italy by way of Burgundy and England, surprisingly the ‘food capital’ of the age. After a diversion to the Iberian peninsula, they conclude in Germany with lively songs that are a true celebration of ale and… eggs! Works by Machaut, Guillaume de (1300-1377)

| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Friday 7-Jun-13 07:00pm Following the success of the Prague première of Le nozze di Figaro, Mozart was immediately commissioned to write another opera. This time, Lorenzo Da Ponte chose the story of the Spanish nobleman Don Juan. The subject matter had been considered a crowd-puller for more than a century, due in particular to the spectacular demise of the hero. Don Giovanni invites the statue of the Commendatore, whom he has murdered, to dinner, and is swallowed up by the jaws of hell. However, the view of the hero had changed considerably since the Spanish dramatist and monk Tirso de Molina first brought the blasphemous deeds and just punishment of the villain to the stage in the 17th century. While de Molina was still entirely on the side of order, which is ultimately re-established through divine intervention, Mozart and Da Ponte turn the sexual braggart and seducer into a man whose unquenchable thirst for happiness calls into the question the very foundations of social coexistence. Don Giovanni thus becomes – involuntarily and perhaps even without realising it – a danger for the social order, which can be maintained only if it functions smoothly. In their comedy, which is shrouded in darkness throughout, Mozart and Da Ponte do not conceal the price that others have to pay for this kind of self-realisation. However, since they do not pass any final judgement and instead do justice to both sides, their work becomes a drama of humanity of indestructible power and relevance – a dramma giocoso that becomes all the more comic the more the tragic aspects behind the course of events become apparent.
The much-vaunted German director Sebastian Baumgarten will present his interpretation of Don Giovanni in Zurich. At the rostrum will be the young Robin Ticciati, a rising star among the new generation of conductors. Our Don Giovanni is the charismatic Peter Mattei, who is sought-after in this role from the Scala in Milan to the New York Met.In Italian with German and English surtitles.Robin Ticciati, Conductor Sebastian Baumgarten, Director Barbara Ehnes, Set Designer Marina Rebeka, Soprano: Donna Anna Julia Kleiter, Soprano: Donna Elvira Anna Gorbachyova, Soprano: Zerlina Peter Mattei, Baritone: Don Giovanni Pavol Breslik, Tenor: Don Ottavio Rafal Siwek, Bass: The Commendatore Ruben Drole, Baritone: Leporello Lukas Jakobski, Bass: Masetto

| La Monnaie | De Munt: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Friday 7-Jun-13 07:00pm The fatal temptation to seek the truth in love: men and women scorch their hearts and wings in trying to unlock the secret of emotions. How quickly perversity and cruelty oust desire and tenderness. Here Mozart enters into a dialogue with Marivaux and Sade. As in his previous operas, he succeeds in producing an incredible tension, a breathtakingly beautiful structuring of the text (his third collaboration with Da Ponte) and the music. Director Michael Haneke, one of the most incisive and insightful film-makers of our time, presents us with his vision of a work that is as spell-binding, serious, complex and at times light as it is formidably modern, where the experience of infidelity transforms the four characters by laying bare their frailty. For the Austrian director, this is his first time at La Monnaie, while Ludovic Morlot conducts his second opera of the season.Image credit: © Flore-Aël Surun / Tendance Floue Ludovic Morlot, Conductor Michael Haneke, Director Christoph Kanter, Set Designer Anett Fritsch, Soprano: Fiordiligi Andreas Wolf, Baritone: Guglielmo Juan Francisco Gatell, Tenor: Ferrando Kerstin Avemo, Soprano: Despina William Shimell, Baritone: Don Alfonso Orchestre Symphonique et Choeurs de la Monnaie | ||

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm Peter Grimes in Concert Peter Grimes is an outsider in ‘The Borough’, a
fictionalised version of Aldeburgh that first appeared
in George Crabbe’s poem in 1810. Yet in contrast to
Crabbe’s sadistic fisherman, Britten’s Grimes emerges
as an enigmatic anti-hero. Is he responsible for the
death of his young apprentice? Is he mad, evil or a
misunderstood visionary? Britten’s early masterpiece has captured the
imagination of audiences around the world ever since
its premiere in the aftermath of the second world war.
First written for Peter Pears, the role of Grimes is
sung by Alan Oke, who received huge critical acclaim
for his portrayal of Aschenbach in the 2007
Aldeburgh Festival production of Death in Venice.

| King Georges Hall, Blackburn, Blackburn BB2 1AA, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm The Hallé This very special concert, conducted by Cristian Mandeal, will feature the winner of the Terence Judd-Hallé Award at this year's Leeds International Piano Competition – one of the most prestigious in the world. Beethoven’s youthful First Piano Concerto is a work of great brilliance and virtuosity. Though modelled on the late piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven’s own musical voice is already very much in evidence. The second half of the concert features one of the most popular symphonies in the repertoire – Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’. Packed with famous tunes, Dvořák’s best known work combines the folk music and landscapes of America with a yearning nostalgia for the composer’s native Bohemia. A stunning climax to the Blackburn Classics Series. | ||

| The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm Puccini’s gift for writing emotional music is brought to the fore in La bohème’s tale of doomed love in poverty-stricken Paris. One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta.
Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration. Playing Mimì is Kate Valentine, who in recent seasons has played the Countess in Fiona Shaw’s production of The Marriage of Figaro and an ‘excellent’ (The Times) Helena in Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Gwyn Hughes Jones returns to the role of Rodolfo following his great success in ENO’s 2010 production, and recent acclaimed Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly.Jonathan Miller, Director Natascha Metherell, Revival Director Isabella Bywater, Set Designer Gwyn Hughes Jones, Tenor: Rodolfo Kate Valentine, Soprano: Mimì Richard Burkhard, Baritone: Marcello Angel Blue, Soprano: Musetta Andrew Craig Brown, Bass: Colline Duncan Rock, Baritone: Schaunard Simon Butteriss, Bass: Benoît

| Sadler's Wells: Peacock Theatre, London, Portugal Street, Holborn, London WC2 2HT, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 07:30pm ZooNation Dance Company — Some Like It Hip Hop ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop has been a runaway success since it hit the Peacock Theatre in 2011, wowing audiences and prompting widespread critical praise with five-star reviews and standing ovations. After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent. | ||

Frank Martin felt his "Le vin herbé" was a personal key work in which he had found his own voice. Based on the novel "Tristan et Iseut" by Joseph Bedier, he created his chambered profane oratorio to dramatise the two lovers Tristan and Isolde.

| Palais Opéra, Liège, Espace Bavière, Boulevard de la Constitution, 4020 Liège, Belgium Friday 7-Jun-13 08:00pm The première of Guillaume Tell by Grétry took place shortly after the French Revolution of 1789. The theme of a people in revolt against a repressive regime (in the original play, the Habsbourgs) will, therefore, have struck a chord with the Parisian audience at the time, as La Muette de Portici (Auber) did here, four decades later. But it was still necessary to transpose this icon into a comic opera. André-Modeste Grétry has highlighted, in this opera, the charms of harmony, melody and sparkling originality. A sweeping, profound style distinguishes its two finales, its situational arias, and, above all, its overture, in which he has managed to introduce the remarkable tune called the "Ranz des Vaches".
Guillaume Tell, the founding myth of Swiss freedom, is familiar to everyone: sentenced to prove his skill because he had refused to salute a bailiff's hat, the hero must pierce an apple placed on his son's head. In the Swiss legend, Guillaume Tell kills the notable to satisfy a thirst for vengeance. Is the freedom of men stronger than everything ?Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie Claudio Scimone, Conductor Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera, Director Jean-guy Lecat, Set Designer Marc Laho, Baritone: Guillaume Tell (William) Anne-Catherine Gillet, Soprano: Madame Tell Lionel Lhote, Baritone: Gesler Liesbeth Devos, Soprano: Marie Patrick Delcour, Baritone: Melktal senior Stefan Cifolelli, Tenor: Melktal junior Roger Joakim, Baritone: Traveller
