| Regent Hall, London, 275 Oxford Street, London W1C 2DJ, United Kingdom Friday 31-May-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Jazz The Royal Academy of Music presents a lunchtime concert of jazz. Sam Rapley is a up and coming young tenor player currently based in London, studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Stan Sulzmann. Originally a classical clarinettist, Rapley switched to jazz saxophone in his mid teens. Since then he has played with the likes of Dave Douglas, Iain Ballamy, James Taylor Quartet, Mike Walker, and has supported John Taylor Trio with his own band."
Sam says - the trio is a new project which is co-led by Alex Munk (guitar), Matt Robinson (piano) and myself (saxophone). We all studied together at the Royal Academy of Music and wanted to form a group more akin to a chamber ensemble rather than the traditional jazz small group setting. The reason for this was to open up new musical possibilities in the way that we write for the group and also to allow us to play in some different venues, such as this, which make us play very differently to how we would if we were playing in a jazz club.Price type: Free

Ballett Zürich |
![]() | ||
| Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Friday 31-May-13 07:00pm Forsythe, Clug, Lightfoot /León The second ballet evening of this season is characterised by a sense of inner drama. It combines two milestones of recent ballet history with a new creation, and offers the opportunity to witness the combination of three fascinating dance languages in one evening. The American William Forsythe has influenced and shaped ballet in the second half of the 20th century like no other choreographer. In his work, he explores and crosses the boundaries of dance as an art form, time and again. In New Sleep, created in 1987 for the San Francisco Ballet, three clown-like figures – accompanied by electronic music by Thom Willems – fall under the spell of a yardstick, a potted plant and a collection of bowling balls.
For the first time, Zurich Ballet will be working with the Romanian choreographer Edward Clug, who rose to international fame primarily thanks to his ballet Radio and Juliet, a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet set to the music of the rock band Radiohead. Clug’s pieces, which enchant audiences with their often absurd tempi and their wealth of choreographic detail, have been performed in Lisbon, Zagreb, Essen and at the Stuttgart Ballet, among other locations.
Having thrilled audiences in Zurich in 2004 with their furiously witty choreography, Skew Whiff, choreographers Lightfoot/León now present their ballet Sleight of Hand. The Englishman Paul Lightfoot and the Spanish woman Sol León met in 1987 in the ensemble of the Nederlands Dans Theaters (NDT) and are among the internationally most sought-after choreographers. They have succeeded Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián as representatives of modern dance in the Netherlands. Paul Lightfoot took over the directorship of the NDT in the 2011/12 season. In the mysterious darkness of Sleight of Hand an encrypted fantasy unfurls; its dance and theatrical roots lie in the story of a family fraught with conflict. The title, Sleight of Hand, is a reference to the art of card-playing.

| The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Friday 31-May-13 07:30pm Puccini’s gift for writing emotional music is brought to the fore in La bohème’s tale of doomed love in poverty-stricken Paris. One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta.
Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration. Playing Mimì is Kate Valentine, who in recent seasons has played the Countess in Fiona Shaw’s production of The Marriage of Figaro and an ‘excellent’ (The Times) Helena in Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Gwyn Hughes Jones returns to the role of Rodolfo following his great success in ENO’s 2010 production, and recent acclaimed Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly.Jonathan Miller, Director Natascha Metherell, Revival Director Isabella Bywater, Set Designer Gwyn Hughes Jones, Tenor: Rodolfo Kate Valentine, Soprano: Mimì Richard Burkhard, Baritone: Marcello Angel Blue, Soprano: Musetta Andrew Craig Brown, Bass: Colline Duncan Rock, Baritone: Schaunard Simon Butteriss, Bass: Benoît

| Sadler's Wells: Peacock Theatre, London, Portugal Street, Holborn, London WC2 2HT, United Kingdom Friday 31-May-13 07:30pm ZooNation Dance Company — Some Like It Hip Hop ZooNation’s Some Like It Hip Hop has been a runaway success since it hit the Peacock Theatre in 2011, wowing audiences and prompting widespread critical praise with five-star reviews and standing ovations. After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent. | ||

Created in the 100th year since Stravinsky’s iconic Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) was composed, iTMOi explores the human condition and the way in which Stravinsky transformed the classical music world by evoking emotions through pattern, rooted in the concept of a woman dancing herself to death.
Featuring an original score by Nitin Sawhney, Jocelyn Pook and Ben Frost, iTMOi is yet another extraordinary artistic collaboration from Khan and a talented artistic team including costume designer Kimie Nakano, dramaturge Ruth Little and an international cast of 12 dancers.Music by Sawhney, Nitin (b. 1964) / Pook, Jocelyn (b. 1960) / Frost, Ben (b. 1980) Choreography by Akram Khan

| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Friday 31-May-13 08:00pm Dvořák's Cello Concerto with Gautier Capuçon Music from three Eastern Europeans gives this program a delightfully colorful sound palette. Dvořák began his enticing concerto while living in New York, but upon returning to Europe, he learned that a woman he’d once loved had died. His youthful song to her permeates this work. Gramophone called Monsieur Capuçon’s recording of it “magical." Kodály’s Dances of Galánta is raucous yet vibrant, and Bartók’s ballet suite in one act features a huge orchestra playing music with dark and totally dramatic undertones. | ||

| Hong Kong Cultural Centre: Concert Hall, 10 Salisburg Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China Friday 31-May-13 08:00pm The Rite Centenary Exactly 100 years ago, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring announced the birth of 20th century music in spectacular style. The scandal of the première ended in a riot. This programme marks this centenary by recreating the programme that first audience heard – Chopin’s delightful waltzes in orchestral form, evoking the elegance of classical ballet, followed by the violence and mayhem of Stravinsky’s master work. Patrons are encouraged to refrain from rioting! As a tribute to the city where this took place, the programme begins with the Paris Symphony – Mozart’s salute to Parisian style. | ||

The deeds of a hero shall bring him glory, they can be of physical or intellectual nature: Courage, a willingness to make sacrifices and to stand up for ideals and fellow human beings. Heroes are the counterpart of villains and cowards – or so they should be.”
With Once Upon An Ever After stage designer rosalie and choreographer Terence Kohler have produced a celebrated blockbuster of dance as the centerpiece of the 100 years of Ballets Russes bill. For Heroes the two artists will once again collaborate to create the premiere of the Ballet Festival Week 2013 on the Bavarian State Ballet. | Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh, PA, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, United States Friday 31-May-13 08:00pm Honeck, Mozart & Mahler As part of Music Director Manfred Honeck’s journey of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies, the Seventh Symphony is one of the reigning highlights of the season. This grand work, composed at a tumultuous time in the composer’s life, is sad yet triumphant and features two “night music” movements. Though a demanding piece both technically and musically, this monumental symphony is extremely gratifying for the musicians and audience alike. The concert begins with a little treat of more “night music” by Mozart.
