Beethoven’s ‘great’ fugue, a conclusion to what is – even without its fi nale – a radical and profound late quartet, is so ambitious in scope and experimental in design that its shockwaves still resound even to modern ears. In a way Haydn is no less radical – his own fugal fi nale is part of a conscious revival of baroque forms and the theatrical drama provided by its four interlocking voices provides tantalizing tiny hints at what his most famous pupil would achieve. Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 21-Sep-13 08:15pm Quatuor Diotima - Natuurfenomenen Zijn natuurwetten, het geluid van brekende golven en van ritselende bladeren te vangen in klank? De Spaanse Alberto Posadas probeerde het met vijf strijkkwartetten die hij componeerde in de periode 2004-2008. Twee van deze composities beleven hun Nederlandse première. Het jonge Franse Quatuor Diotima – ‘een van de vijf strijkkwartetten die u gehoord moet hebben’, aldus Gramophone in 2006 – ontving voor hun opname van de Liturgia Fractal in 2009 de prestigieuze Diapason d’Or. De naam van Quatuor Diotima is ontleend aan Fragmente-Stile, an Diotima van Luigi Nono. Het zwaartepunt van hun repertoire ligt in de 20e-eeuwse muziek die verder gaat en experimenteler is dan louter melodie met begeleiding. De musici vonden elkaar in 1996 en dragen sindsdien de hedendaagse muziek een warm hart toe. In the music’s defiant restlessness we experience first-hand something of Beethoven’s revolutionary intent, the forces that took his works onto new levels of musical expression and human will. The prizewinning French ensemble Quatuor Voce make their Barbican debut in this concert, playing Beethoven alongside Thomas Adès’s striking musical picture of ‘vanishing idylls’ written in 1994, Arcadiana. Gespeeld door het Frans-Belgische Quatuor Danel wordt deze rondgang door de muziekgeschiedenis een logisch verhaal. Internationaal staat het bekend om zijn authentieke uitvoeringen van de klassieke en hedendaagse kwartetmuziek. Het ideale kwartet voor een rit van vroeger naar nu. Het Quatuor Danel werd door Gramophone ‘een van de meest toonaangevende kwartetten van de afgelopen twintig jaar’ genoemd.
