| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Friday 21-Jun-13 11:00am Tokyo Quartet The chance to hear one of the world’s finest chamber
ensembles is special enough. That it comes only weeks
before it disbands after a remarkable four decade
career makes this an occasion to savour. The Tokyo
Quartet bring their sumptuous, burnished sound,
precision of ensemble and deep musical understanding
to a compelling programme; Beethoven’s fizzing,
compressed energy, Bartok’s poignant farewell to
the form and Debussy’s only quartet, agile, poetic,
distilling his visionary new musical world into this
most traditional of forms. Groundbreaking, ingenious
masterpieces all three, and a fitting triptych for a
revered quartet’s farewell. | ||

| United Methodist Church, San Luis Obispo, CA, 1515 Fredericks St, San Luis Obispo, 93405, United States Monday 22-Jul-13 07:30pm Chamber Series: Born from Struggle Many great works of art are born from tragedy, strife and struggle. These three pieces, written in different parts of the world in different time periods, represent the struggles each composer faced. In 1915 France was in the midst of WW I, and Debussy struggled with the cancer that would take his life. In addition to Napolean's invasion of Vienna and his deteriorating relationships with family, Beethoven also had to contend with deafness while writing Op. 95, one of his most celebrated quartets. And the String Quartet No. 6 was the last piece of music Bartok write in his native Hungary, having to flee the Nazis in WW II. | ||

| Stadtmuseum Siegburg, Markt 46, 53721 Siegburg, Germany Friday 20-Sep-13 08:00pm Minds of their Own It doesn’t often happen in the classical-music scene that successful soloists get together to form an ensemble. The result of such a collaboration is all the more interesting, the more independent and self-confident each of the musicians is. One international ensemble of performers with minds of their own performed for the first time at the Konzerthaus in Dortmund in September 2012. It comprised Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Pekka Kuusisto, Lilli Maijala and Pieter Wispelwey. September 2013 will see the debut of this “laboratory quartet” of outstanding musicians at the Beethovenfest Bonn.
