| Hong Kong Cultural Centre: Concert Hall, 10 Salisburg Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong, China Friday 24-May-13 08:00pm Ashkenazy Conducts Great-hearted, superb musicianship has characterised Vladimir Ashkenazy’s career, both as a pianist and a conductor. A musical giant of our time, his concerts are always thrilling, his interpretations sublimely artistic. These concerts mark his début in the HKPO’s season, and feature aptly passionate masterworks. Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, a heroic celebration of Finland’s native wonders, evokes profound darkness and gleaming light. Richard Strauss’ Don Juan captures the blustering romance of a reckless lover. Then, from much later in Strauss’ life, the Four Last Songs mark a farewell to life and love. | ||

| Sage: Hall One, Gateshead, Gateshead, United Kingdom Friday 17-Jan-14 07:30pm City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Andris Nelsons and the CBSO come to Sage Gateshead for music of beauty both sumptuous and raw. Richard Strauss’s late songs shot through with tearful resignation, a resigned goodbye to the world, are heard after his rollicking rollercoaster ride ‘Don Juan’ from 60 years earlier. They finish with Stravinsky’s ‘Petrushka’ – a playful yet disturbing score in which the composer returned to his roots, depicting Russia with, in his own words, “quick tempos, major keys, smells of Russian food, sweat and glistening leather boots.” With a pre-concert talk. Buses from Alnwick and Hexham. Tickets: £13-£36 | ||

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 1-May-14 07:30pm Don Juan Richard Strauss’s Don Juan goes off like a rocket, and you can almost smell the Fabergé Brut in this swashbuckling musical portrait of a great seducer in action. It’s a breathtaking opener to a concert that climaxes with Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra shooting joyful fireworks into the grey skies of post-war Poland. First, though, comes an even more brilliant celebration – as the 25-year-old violin star Ray Chen makes his Liverpool debut with the bittersweet songs and zingy dances of Prokofiev’s everpopular Second Violin Concerto. Three beautiful miniatures from Lutosławski’s friend Górecki complete what should be a memorable return visit for conductor Michał Nesterowicz – who had such a warm welcome last season. ‘Ray Chen can do pretty much anything he wants on the violin. Chen makes a beautiful sound but doesn’t get lost in tone for its own sake; he knows how to make a sound that feels exactly right for the piece in question.’ The Washington Post | ||

| Carnegie Hall: Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, New York City, NY, New York City, NY, United States Friday 16-May-14 08:00pm Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra The spirited Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of chief conductor Mariss Jansons, returns to Carnegie Hall to perform two works that highlight the destructive power of love: Strauss’s Don Juan, a score chronicling the notorious womanizer and his hedonistic audacity, and Berlioz’s orchestral tour-de-force Symphonie fantastique, a hallucinatory tale of suicide, murder, ecstasy, and despair drawn from an artist’s self-destructive passion for a beautiful woman. | ||
