| Flagey: Studio 4, Brussels, Place Saint-Croix / Heilig Kruisplein, 1050 Brussels, Belgium Friday 14-Jun-13 08:15pm Alain Altinoglu: Boléro After his brilliant debut at La Monnaie in Cendrillon, Alain Altinoglu continues to browse through the French repertoire. Like some of Ernest Chausson’s other compositions, his only symphony, composed in 1889, is an undervalued gem. It confirms Chausson’s key position in the evolution of French symphonic music: building on the legacy of Franck and Wagner, he pointed the way forward to the burgeoning impressionism in music. Several years later Fauré composed music for Maeterlinck’s play Pelléas et Mélisande, from which he distilled a concert suite that is his symphonic masterpiece. The big hit by Ravel that is also on the programme was equally inspired by the performing arts. In 1927 Ida Rubinstein asked him to write the music for a ballet. Ravel based his composition on the bolero, because of the melodic simplicity and repetitive rhythm of this Spanish dance. It is no exaggeration to say that this Boléro immediately found its way onto the concert platform and has stayed there ever since.Image credit: (c) Gilles Larvor _ Agence Vu | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 3-Aug-13 08:00pm Europe's Finest Classical music is only for the elderly? When the European Union Youth Orchestra plays a guest performance once again this Saturday, you will find out pretty quickly that this cliché has long become obsolete. The best new talents from all 27 EU countries that make up this orchestra are popular among audiences on account of their passion and youthful joy of performing. Last year, the audience greeted the EUYO’s programme «Symphonic Hollywood» with gushing enthusiasm. The Music Director of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra Krzysztof Urbanski, who is at home on international stages, will conduct this year’s concert. And before the young musicians take the stage of the Wolkenturm in the evening together with pianist Boris Berezovsky, they will demonstrate in the Prelude that they also set standards as chamber musicians. | Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Thursday 12-Sep-13 08:00pm Rhythm Pure The keyword of this appearance of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck is “rhythm”. The first work on the programme is the concerto for percussion, “Conjurer”, by the American composer John Corigliano. The work is a highly transparent sound study, in which the virtuoso percussionist Martin Grubinger can be heard on more than 30 instruments. Fitting accompaniments to this piece are two compositions by Maurice Ravel, of which the second in particular, the worldfamous “Boléro”, owes its great success to its rhythm.

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-Jan-14 07:30pm Ravel's Bolero and Beethoven's Fourth Lionel Bringuier, Music Director of the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, is one of the most exciting young conductors to emerge from France in recent years. This is a programme to conjure with for a conductor of his contagious vitality: between Beethoven’s spirited fourth symphony and the hypnotic extended climax that is Ravel’s sultry Boléro, are two 21st century French gems. Marc-Andre Dalbavie’s Flute Concerto, written for chamber orchestra, is characterised by transparency, and a fluent dialogue between soloist and orchestra, in which each finds resonances in the other. In Ravel à son âme (Ravel, to his soul), Gérard Pesson pays brief, entrancing tribute to his illustrious predecessor. Tickets £10 - 32. Pesson, Gérard (b. 1958), Ravel à son âme (UK première) | ||
