| Cadogan Hall, London, 5 Sloane Terrace, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Thursday 28-Nov-13 07:30pm Jamie Walton performs Elgar A programme of contrasting musical styles unified by exquisite emotional power. Composed during World War One, Ravel dedicated each movement of his Le tombeau de Couperin to a fallen friend. Yet the influence of the Baroque composer, Couperin, results in music of bittersweet understatement. Also written in response to the First World War, Elgar’s Cello Concerto is one of his greatest works, the cello evoking the human voice as it unfolds aching, deeply moving melodies. The Concerto is performed by Jamie Walton, hailed by the Washington Post as ‘a major cello talent… Though relatively young, he plays with the dignity and reserve of a well-seasoned artist’. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony offers a profound insight into the composer’s tumultuous emotional history, travelling a longed-for journey from unfulfilled desires to joyful acceptance.Image credit: Gunter Glucklick | ||

| Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, Exchange Street, Aylesbury, United Kingdom Saturday 30-Nov-13 07:30pm Jamie Walton performs Elgar Christoph Koenig joins the Orchestra for a concert which opens with two pieces inspired by the First World War. Ravel’s unusually light-hearted piece Le tombeau de Couperin, about friends lost during the War, contrasts with the contemplative and elegiac tone of Elgar’s Cello Concerto, performed by rising star Jamie Walton. The programme culminates in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. Contrary to his own beliefs that this Symphony marked the beginning of his creative decline, its string of unforgettable melodies and breathtaking emotional power has made it his most popular. | ||

| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Tuesday 22-Apr-14 07:30pm Steven Isserlis performs Elgar The great cellist Steven Isserlis performs Elgar’s Cello Concerto, with Kirill Karabits at the helm. Elgar wrote the piece – his last major work – in the wake of the First World War. The Concerto is suffused with desolate beauty, and the human quality of the cello makes it the perfect mouthpiece for such profoundly moving music. Framing the Concerto are works by Prokofiev and Rimsky-Korsakov. Prokofiev’s ‘Classical’ Symphony is a witty tribute to the music of Haydn and his contemporaries, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade is a glittering and irresistible score.Image credit: Satoshi Aoyagi | ||

| Cambridge Corn Exchange, Cambridge CB3 9DP, United Kingdom Thursday 22-May-14 07:30pm Julian Lloyd Webber performs Elgar The 2013-14 Cambridge Classical Concert Series concludes with a quintessentially English concert.
Benjamin Britten's Peter Grimes is regarded by many as the greatest English opera ever written. Its Four Sea Interludes, originally written as scene change music, have now become arguably even more popular than the opera itself, perfectly mirroring the characters' shifting emotional tides. Cambridge Corn Exchange's Artist in Residence Julian Lloyd Webber brings Elgar's sublime Cello Concerto vividly and passionately to life. The evening ends with Vaughan Williams' elegiac Symphony No.3, with celebrated soprano Lucy Hall ending the series on a beautiful, ethereal note.Image credit: Simon Fowler | ||
