| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: Solo Bach Stradivarius etc When our Artistic Director and Founder Denis Brott found the cello he wanted to perform on for the rest of his life, there was only one problem. He couldn’t afford it! This isn’t news in the music world as very few can afford a Stradivarius or, as Denis wanted, a 1706 Tecchler! With a few close friends, especially William Turner and the Canada Council’s Gilles Lefebvre, he helped create what would soon become a revolutionary institution, the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank. Their first instrument was Denis’s prized Tecchler.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. An historic event!Ariel Barnes, Cello Boson Mo, Violin Jonathan Chan, Violin Véronique Mathieu, Violin Arnold Choi, Cello Emily Westell, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Emmanuel Vukovich, Violin Rachel Desoer, Cello Se-Doo Park, Cello Matilda Kaul, Violin Carissa Klopoushak, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Nikki Chooi, Violin Timothy Chooi, Violin | ||

| Collegium Leoninum, Bonn, Noeggerathstraße 34, 53111 Bonn, Germany Friday 13-Sep-13 08:00pm Cello Metamorphoses Johann Sebastian Bach’s cello suites are among the foundation documents for solo cello music. Without a doubt they influenced the composition of Britten’s colourful, descriptive solo works, which date from some 240 years later than the Bach suites. In Britten’s centenary year, the celebrated cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras has included in his programme a key work by the English composer, one now seen as one of the most penetrating works for the solo cello, with a view to relating it to Bach’s music for the instrument.Image credit: © Yoshinori Mido | ||
