| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 18-May-13 07:00pm Les Contes d'Hoffmann The protagonist of the opera is E.T.A. Hoffmann, the prototype of the German romantic period artist: his life is an artwork, his lower depths, his doubts, his grand inspirations – his crises. And all of these are connected with: women. Hoffmann in the opera tells of three types of woman in his tales, the “lifeless doll with a heart of ice”, the “virtuoso”, ill and destined to die, as well as the “shameless courtesan”.
Jacques Offenbach’s opera fantastique, premièred in 1881, is based on the play of the same name by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, who drew from the biographies and works of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Adelbert von Chamisso and Alfred de Musset to create their own artist’s drama. It is not a literature opera – the protagonists from different romantic tales are connected to one another by a fictitious Hoffmann – but rather more of a message to the writer, telling him to make art his matter of the heart, or perhaps even open up his heart with brutal frankness.
Co-production with the English National Opera, London.

|
![]() | ||
| Stadthalle, Göttingen, 37073 Göttingen, Germany Saturday 18-May-13 07:30pm Galaconcert: Sandrine Piau The programme of this year’s Gala Concert
tells of the beauty of the Orient and of its
darker sides. “Queen of the Baroque”
French vocalist Sandrine Piau made her
name as one of the top interpreters of
music from Lully to Handel, working with
conductors such as Jacobs, Christie, Herreweghe
and Rousset. In arias from Giulio
Cesare and Alexander Balus, the Gala
audience witnesses her as the Egyptian
ruler Cleopatra, around whose dramatic
love affairs countless tales have been spun.
With Johann Joseph Fux’ splendidly colourful
Turcaria, the FestspielOrchester
Göttingen takes us into the fray: we find
ourselves in the midst of the Turkish siege
of Vienna in 1683. And by alternating Sephardic
Jewish folk music with Baroque
works, the Ensemble NAYA spans a musical
bridge that links the Orient with the
Occident. Handel, George Frideric (1685-1759), Alexander Balus, HWV 65: Hark! Hark! He strikes the Golden Lyre

Handel based his work on the libretto by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. In its first season Siroe was performed on 18 successive evenings, but it was never subsequently revived in Handel’s lifetime. The opera now receives its first performance in Göttingen with a top-rank cast performing under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. | Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 22-May-13 08:00pm Bach Week: Solo Bach Stradivarius etc When our Artistic Director and Founder Denis Brott found the cello he wanted to perform on for the rest of his life, there was only one problem. He couldn’t afford it! This isn’t news in the music world as very few can afford a Stradivarius or, as Denis wanted, a 1706 Tecchler! With a few close friends, especially William Turner and the Canada Council’s Gilles Lefebvre, he helped create what would soon become a revolutionary institution, the Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank. Their first instrument was Denis’s prized Tecchler.
Today the Bank possesses 35 million dollars of string instruments and, through competition, offers each one for three years to outstanding young Canadian artists. A few of the instruments came together on stage at the Festival several years ago but otherwise the collection, which includes Stradivarius, Guarneri del Gesù and Gagliano, has never been heard in performance on the same stage at the same time. Until now! For the first time in the history of the Canada Council, we are proud to present 16 winners of the 2012 competition. This concert features each performer in a solo work by Bach. An historic event!Ariel Barnes, Cello Boson Mo, Violin Jonathan Chan, Violin Véronique Mathieu, Violin Arnold Choi, Cello Emily Westell, Violin Iryna Krechkovsky, Violin Emmanuel Vukovich, Violin Rachel Desoer, Cello Se-Doo Park, Cello Matilda Kaul, Violin Carissa Klopoushak, Violin Kerry DuWors, Violin Andréa Tyniec, Violin Nikki Chooi, Violin Timothy Chooi, Violin

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Thursday 23-May-13 07:00pm Men don't fall in love with courtesans! That's the opinion of Alfredo's father after his son moves in with the mortally ill Violetta Valéry. In her love for Alfredo Violetta even agrees. She leaves him, dies poor, ill – still dreaming of the happiness of true love. One of Verdi's most beloved operas continues to hold the mirror up to society and its hypocritical morality. An exemplary production! See it!

| Staatsoper at Schiller Theater, Berlin, Bismarckstraße 110, 10625 Berlin, Germany Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm Caravaggio Music by Moretti, Bruno (b. 1960)/Monteverdi, Claudio (1567-1643) Choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti Caravaggio, born Michelangelo Merisi, has entered history due to his paintings of dramatic intensity. Caravaggio used to venture the threshold beyond the pale throughout his life. He was seen for admiration of his work and harsh opposition towards his extraordinary realism in painting human beings. Due to his passionate personality, he encountered more than several conflicts with people around him, sponsors, and the law. One of his foremost artistic twists was the extreme contrast between brightness and darkness, light and shadow.
Mauro Bigonzetti is one of the leading choreographers of the Italian ballet which freed itself from the predominance of mainly classical opera companies in the 80’s. He created his choreographies mainly for the Aterballetto in Reggio Emilia that helped him to fame and worldwide attention. “When I think of Caravaggio, I think of the artist and the human being at the same time. These are the two sides of the human existence that interest me in particular. The relations of these two worlds are the inspiration for this work: the inner world on the one hand – and how it evolves artistically on the other.”
Mauro Bigonzetti has developed the piece CARAVAGGIO in collaboration with the Staatsballett Berlin.
45 minutes before each performance (except premieres), there is an introduction in the opera house (in German).
It is prepared and moderated by students of the institute of dance studies (Institut für Tanzwissenschaft) of Freie Universität Berlin.
