| The London Coliseum, St. Martin's Lane, London WC2N 4ES, United Kingdom Wednesday 19-Jun-13 07:30pm Puccini’s gift for writing emotional music is brought to the fore in La bohème’s tale of doomed love in poverty-stricken Paris. One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta.
Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration. Playing Mimì is Kate Valentine, who in recent seasons has played the Countess in Fiona Shaw’s production of The Marriage of Figaro and an ‘excellent’ (The Times) Helena in Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Gwyn Hughes Jones returns to the role of Rodolfo following his great success in ENO’s 2010 production, and recent acclaimed Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly.Jonathan Miller, Director Natascha Metherell, Revival Director Isabella Bywater, Set Designer Gwyn Hughes Jones, Tenor: Rodolfo Kate Valentine, Soprano: Mimì Richard Burkhard, Baritone: Marcello Angel Blue, Soprano: Musetta Andrew Craig Brown, Bass: Colline Duncan Rock, Baritone: Schaunard Simon Butteriss, Bass: Benoît

These six musicians living in Berlin represent Romania, Israel, Venezuela, Germany, USA and Turkey. Widely recognized as one of the most prominent ensemble pianists of our times, Zeynep Özsuca had cooperated with various artists including Magdalena Kožená, Rolando Villazon, Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel. A promising flute player of his generation Aaron Dan was the winner of Belgrade International Flute Competition in 2005. And Yigal Kaminka is a musician whose mastery of contemporary oboe is matched by his virtuosity in baroque oboe and block flute. Sascha Rattle is a musician who drew a great attention since the first time he performed with Berlin Philharmonic as a soloist in 2009. Performed in numerous concerts in North and South America, Russia, Europe and the Middle East both as a soloist and a chamber music artist, Heidi Elizabeth Mockert is a bassoon player invited by several important chamber music ensembles. In addition to all prominent orchestras in Hungary, French horn player Dániel Molnár also performs in several important orchestras in Europe, including Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. They champion the work of both young and established composers, whether singing Tomkins or Takemitsu, Bach or Bublé. Love and War: two favourite Renaissance themes feature in this programme of music from England, Italy and France. The inspiration for the first half is the 1592 collection of madrigals Il trionfi di Dori; the second half starts and finishes with two of the great chansons by Clément Janequin – his depiction of street life in Paris (Les Cris de Paris) and his musical rendition of the 1515 Battle of Marignano (La Guerre). Detail: By popular acclaim, we are pleased to welcome back Brian Kay to conduct this year’s Shaldon Festival choral concert. Brian divides his working life between the concert platform and the broadcasting studio. His many presentations for BBC radio have included Brian Kay’s Sunday Morning, Brian Kay’s Light Programme, Three for All, and Choirworks – all for Radio 3 – on Radio 2, the popular programmes Melodies for you and Friday Night is Music Night and for Radio 4, Comparing Notes and Music in Mind. His television appearances have included the competitions to find the Cardiff Singer of the World and the Choir of the Year, and every year since 1996, the New Year’s Day Concert from Vienna. He has twice won a Sony Award as Music Presenter of the Year, including the coveted Gold Award in 1996. Brian is Conductor of the Leith Hill Musical Festival and the Burford Singers. He is Principal Conductor of The Really Big Chorus, with which he regularly conducts massed voices in London's Royal Albert Hall, together with recent concerts in Salzburg, Prague, Venice, Halle, Seville, Cape Town, and Beijing's Forbidden City Concert Hall. The choir will perform two musical settings of the words from the Gloria by Poulenc and Vivaldi. In the case of Francis Poulenc there is an unmistakable freshness and vivacity, and Antonio Vivaldi’s setting is one of his best known sacred works and a tremendously appealing example of late Baroque sacred music.
