The adventurous trip takes them via Denmark and Sweden to far beyond the borders of the civilized world and into the icy desert of Spitsbergen – and, quite surprisingly, on their way home they stop in Potsdam. The Norwegian city of Trondheim is another stop. And who could be more suited to turning Mademoiselle d’Aunets travel images into sound than the TRONDHEIM SOLISTENE. They are the top Orchestra from Scandinavia, which is rooted in the home landscape like none other and even owes it its distinctive sound – fresh and clear like a morning at a fjord …

| Nikolaisaal, Potsdam, Wilhelm-Staab-Straße 10-11, 14467 Potsdam, Germany Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm Anne Sofie von Otter Ever since the "Swedish nightingale" Jenny Lind captured the hearts of audiences in the period of Chopin and Mendelssohn, extraordinary Scandinavian singers have time and again taken the international stages by storm including legendary Wagner singers such as Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson, lyrical tenor Nicolai Gedda or Jussi Björling, "the Swedish Caruso" who Mankell’s opera-loving detective Wallander named his dog after. Anne Sofie von Otter is, in the best possible sense of the word, a modern representative of her art. Critics rightly rave about "one of the most flexible and most natural vocal instruments" among great contemporary voices. Von Otter, Forsberg and Kuusisto create an evening of Scandinavian Lieder-art and chamber music with the piano for once being more than the accompanying instrument and a violin that truly sings enchantingly. Scandinavian teamwork!

| Orangery Sanssouci: Raffael Hall, Potsdam, Orangery Sanssouci, Potsdam, Germany Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm North of Vienna Beethoven’s intoxicating septet, which fills the Mozart-period serenade with a spirit of compositional innovation, is a major success with audiences and inspires many colleagues. Franz Berwald‘s treatment of the original and experiencing what colouring he derives from the same instrumentation make for an exciting comparison. The Swede whose ancestors had originally come from the "Neumark" lived in Berlin for ten years, not from his music, however, but as an orthopaedic because he never gained the recognition as a musician, which he so richly deserves during his life. His vital stubbornness also impressed the Dane Carl Nielsen who wrote his "serenade in vain" as a witty accompaniment to Beethoven’s piece in a concert. Played like this by the ensemble OXALYS from Brussels, audiences will definitely not turn a deaf ear.

They champion the work of both young and established composers, whether singing Tomkins or Takemitsu, Bach or Bublé. Love and War: two favourite Renaissance themes feature in this programme of music from England, Italy and France. The inspiration for the first half is the 1592 collection of madrigals Il trionfi di Dori; the second half starts and finishes with two of the great chansons by Clément Janequin – his depiction of street life in Paris (Les Cris de Paris) and his musical rendition of the 1515 Battle of Marignano (La Guerre). | Sanssouci Palace: Court of Honour, Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany Sunday 23-Jun-13 09:00pm Scandinavian Last Night This week midsummer night is celebrated everywhere in the North and each country has its very own customs. In Denmark and Norway the summer solstice festivities were connected to John the Baptist’s saint’s day, so celebrations commence tonight into "St. Hans Eve". Lighting huge bonfires to scare away evil spirits is always an important part, then there is the traditional "fire speech", which takes a satirical look at day-to-day affairs. In Denmark they even place a straw witch on top of the fire and send her back to Mount Brocken in the Harz Mountains in Germany – German craftsmen are reported to have brought this custom to the country a long time ago. A night of miracles and legends – perfect for entering musical fairy-tale worlds where Shakespeare’s elves, Nordic trolls and characters from Arabian nights gather …
