Hafiz’s poetry inspired Goethe to create the ‘West-Östlicher Divan’ – a collection of love poems, epigrams and drinking songs. Goethe’s verses in turn inspired composers such as Franz Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn, while poems of Hafiz were set to music by Hugo Wolf and Richard Strauss. Join us as we explore Europe’s century-long love affair with the Orient through poetry, painting and song. Ravel, Maurice (1875-1937), Shéhérazade (excerpts) | ||

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm International Piano Series: Piotr Anderszewski Acclaimed by The Telegraph for performing recitals that 'make you glad to be alive', the Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski is an artist noted for exceptional musical intensity and originality. These qualities inspired the distinguished film director Bruno Monsaingeon to make three films about him. Critics have deemed him 'breathtaking' and 'unforgettable' (The Independent), and he occasionally likes to surprise his public. 'We found him already waiting for us on stage - lounging on a sofa, sipping tea, leafing through a magazine... Anderszewski strolled to the piano like a guest at the party whose turn it was to play. He got a different kind of attention as a result, and a different quality of silence.' (The Independent) Programme to include: Works by Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750) Works by Schumann, Robert (1810-1856) | ||

| Concertgebouw Brugge: Concert Hall, Bruges, 8000 Bruges, Belgium Friday 24-May-13 08:00pm Brussels Philharmonic: Le Sacre du Printemps At the request of the Concertgebouw, the Venezuelan-Canadian choreographer and dancer José Navas created a personal solo version of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. On the list of scandalous concerts, The Rite is joined by Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin. The libretto of the latter disturbed its original audiences with its violence, and the musical setting also made this composition a classic example of expressionism. Nor was scandal absent from Ravel’s La Valse. The work was at the forefront of his feud with Diaghilev, who promptly rejected the work. | ||
