| Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA, San Francisco, CA 94102, United States Saturday 18-May-13 08:00pm Janowski conducts Brahms and Schumann Two giants of the Romantic era grace the program. Schumann proudly called his overture “one of the strongest of my musical children.” His electrifying Fourth Symphony (it actually predated two of his others) was a birthday present to his young wife Clara. Brahms made the unusual concerto pairing of violin and cello partly to mend a break in his friendship with a virtuoso violinist. The instruments’ pronounced difference in sound resulted in a dramatic, Gypsy-flavored work. | ||

| Southbank Centre: Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 23-May-13 07:30pm International Piano Series: Piotr Anderszewski Acclaimed by The Telegraph for performing recitals that 'make you glad to be alive', the Polish-Hungarian pianist Piotr Anderszewski is an artist noted for exceptional musical intensity and originality. These qualities inspired the distinguished film director Bruno Monsaingeon to make three films about him. Critics have deemed him 'breathtaking' and 'unforgettable' (The Independent), and he occasionally likes to surprise his public. 'We found him already waiting for us on stage - lounging on a sofa, sipping tea, leafing through a magazine... Anderszewski strolled to the piano like a guest at the party whose turn it was to play. He got a different kind of attention as a result, and a different quality of silence.' (The Independent) Programme to include: Works by Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750) Works by Schumann, Robert (1810-1856) | ||

| Sage: Hall One, Gateshead, Gateshead, United Kingdom Sunday 9-Jun-13 07:30pm The Romantic Symphony 4 May 1841, and Clara Schumann could hear her husband at work on his Fourth Symphony. “I know it is emerging from the bottom of his heart’ she wrote.” In fact, her husband was writing Clara into the piece: in the delicately winding string and bassoon theme of the work’s opening, Schumann purposefully captured their fragile but heartfelt love. The distinct, mature colouring of Brahms’s final symphony brings our season-long double portrait of Brahms and Schumann to a close. | ||

But while Schumann’s magnifi cent cycle creates a large canvas on which to draw his protagonist’s desires and despair, Britten’s is a miracle of concision where every phrase is potent, every song a fl eeting impression befi tting the ‘fragments’ of the title. Birtwistle’s major new cycle reunites composer, writer David Harsent and lead role from his 2009 Aldeburgh-commissioned opera, The Corridor. | ||
