| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 10-Aug-13 08:00pm Australia's Best The Australian Youth Orchestra is the best youth orchestra in its home country and the second young top orchestra guest-performing in Grafenegg this year. And there is someone who looks forward to this visit very much: Brett Dean, our composer in residence 2013, was born in Australia and used to be a member of the orchestra in his youth. The concert unites three continents: the young Australians bring with them the German conductor Christoph Eschenbach and the US American violinist Joshua Bell — the latter was presented with an «Echo Klassik» award for his CD «French Impressions». Australia is also represented in the form of music by Peter Sculthorpe: his concerto «Earth Cry» with optional didgeridoo precedes a work by his fellow countryman Brett Dean. | ||

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 27-Feb-14 07:30pm Don Quixote Richard Strauss claimed that he could depict even a knife and fork in music. So when he turned his imagination to the tale of Don Quixote, the results were… well, hear for yourself, as Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra summon up sorcerers, knights, windmills and a whole flock of bleating sheep!
It’s a musical shaggy-dog story with the warmest of hearts, and a great showcase for the Orchestra’s principal cello, Jonathan Aasgaard. First, though, Rimsky-Korsakov pops open the musical Cava, before we welcome a true living legend of the violin, as Vadim Repin makes his Liverpool debut in the sparky, songful concerto by the great Polish-turned-British composer, Andrzej Panufnik, whose centenary we celebrate. Serious fun – and real passion. | ||

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 28-Feb-14 07:30pm Artist Spotlight: Vengerov / BBC Symphony Orchestra The young sultana Scheherazade can delay her daybreak execution only by diverting the sultan with magnificent stories. She tells him of The Sea and the Shipwreck on the Rock, The Young Prince and Princess and The Festival of Baghdad. In his musical version of Sheherazade’s night of magnificent tales, Rimsky-Korsakov conjured magic, propulsion and beauty in some of the most intoxicating orchestral music ever written. Here, in a similarly astonishing show of skill and dexterity, Maxim Vengerov conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and plays the violin solos as the neat and ordered brilliance of Beethoven’s Triple Concerto meets the spectacular, seat-pinning power of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Don’t miss Vengerov with some of his closest invited colleagues in what’s sure to be an atmosphere-charged concert. The concert finishes at approximately 9.30pm

| Grieg Hall (Grieghallen), Bergen, Edvard Griegs plass 1, Bergen 5015, Norway Saturday 29-Mar-14 06:00pm The Golden Cockerel (Le Coq d'Or) Rimsky-Korsakov, champion of Russian 19th century composers, master of colour and weaver of great and magical folk tales, wrote his last opera, The Golden Cockerel, as a fairy-tale, with a luscious and exotic score. The censors, however, were not fooled, and trouble loomed as the composer was accused of slyly criticising the Tsar´s handling of the Russian-Japanese war. Mikko Franck, artisitic director of the Finnish National Opera, conducts the orchestra in full, romantic format with an international roster of glorious voices. Sung in Russian with Norwegian subtitles. Introduction in the Grieg Hall foyer one hour before the performance. Duration: 3 hours including interval. | National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Friday 30-May-14 07:30pm Les Ballets Russes Originating from Paris in 1909, the dance avant garde conquered the world in the form of the Ballets Russes. The "Dance Country Germany" welcomed them with open arms. In 1912 already, Vaslav Nijinsky, famous dancer and choreographer of the group, danced at Munich’s Nationaltheater. The stylistic variety, the mysterious mixture of the present and a rather opulent exotic appeal remain effective to this day. The Bavarian State Ballet stayed true to its thorough and authentic approach to reconstructing the almost completely lost world of rich imagery in Shéhéherazade. "A tragic episode of love and death; light humor of the 20s in the realm of the Cote D'Azur. Cheeky teenagers, Les biches in French, tease their male counterparts. Then there is the Afternoon of a Faun, which caused a major outcry amongst audiences back in 1912 due to it overtly sexual content."
Claudia Jeschke and Ann Hutchinson-Guest revived the fragile miniature with the help of the Nijinsky’s sketches and notes and a great eye for detail. Neither vulgarity nor hastiness can lessen the overall appeal of the subtle movement language with all its nuances.
