| Wigmore Hall, London, 36 Wigmore Street, London W1U 2BP, United Kingdom Sunday 30-Jun-13 07:30pm Les liaisons dangereuses This year’s annual Royal College of Music string showcase at the Wigmore Hall is based around a series of “dangerous liaisons” between composers and their muses. So we hear Janáček’s take on Tolstoy, and Prokofiev’s take on Shakespeare. We hear Martinů get to grips with Rossini, and Szymanowski get to grips with Paganini. We find out what came out of Britten’s meeting with Rostropovich, and of Walton’s meeting with Julian Bream. And, of course, we discover the most dangerous liaison of all, in the shape of Tartini’s encounter with the devil himself… Prokofiev, Sergey (1891-1953), Romeo and Juliet Suite no. 1, Op.64bis (arr Borisovsky) | ||

![]() | ||
| Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, Cheltenham GL52 3JE, United Kingdom Friday 12-Jul-13 11:00am Boris Giltburg While 'the Waltz' provides a tantalising sub-theme to this programme, linking the glittering virtuosity of Rachmaninov's early work to Ravel's and Liszt's own dizzying showpieces and the opening waltz of Schubert's Papillons (a suite of miniatures intended to represent a masked ball), the waltz in the third movement of Prokofiev's energetic Sonata belies a darker, military theme. One of what are often nicknamed Prokofiev's 'War Sonatas', scattering arpeggios and the striking of a fist on the keys evoke gunshots and explosions before giving way to a beautiful, yet interrupted and fragmented Allegretto. A concert of darkness and light, executed with Giltburg's trademark sensitivity and verve. | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Saturday 3-Aug-13 08:00pm Europe's Finest Classical music is only for the elderly? When the European Union Youth Orchestra plays a guest performance once again this Saturday, you will find out pretty quickly that this cliché has long become obsolete. The best new talents from all 27 EU countries that make up this orchestra are popular among audiences on account of their passion and youthful joy of performing. Last year, the audience greeted the EUYO’s programme «Symphonic Hollywood» with gushing enthusiasm. The Music Director of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra Krzysztof Urbanski, who is at home on international stages, will conduct this year’s concert. And before the young musicians take the stage of the Wolkenturm in the evening together with pianist Boris Berezovsky, they will demonstrate in the Prelude that they also set standards as chamber musicians.
