Reden om deze Engelse componist te eren met twee voor hem kenmerkende ensemblewerken. In zijn muziek zet hij muzikale uitersten lijnrecht tegenover elkaar, als hoog/laag, hard/zacht, melodie/begeleiding. ‘Een instrumentaal rollenspel’ zo karakteriseerde Birtwistle Secret Theatre. Zijn werken delen het programma met een nieuwe compositie van de Nederlandse Robin de Raaff en werk van de Brit James Wood. Insomnio combineert graag 20e-eeuwse klassiekers met nieuw werk. Voor dit concert schrijft de Nederlandse componist Robin de Raaff een slagwerkconcert. The part of the Green Knight was modelled on the range of Wotan, and is pitted against the baritone Gawain. Birtwistle’s characteristic combination of machine-like instrumental writing and vocal lyricism meet in a piece described by the composer as ‘a mechanical pastoral’.
