Taxis, street-sellers, traffic jams and fog; for Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edwardian London was a symphony just waiting to be written, packed with humour, atmosphere and delightfully hummable tunes. Listen for the chimes of Big Ben as Sir Andrew Davis shows us the sights, and then soars high above the English countryside with virtuoso Tasmin Little in 'The Lark Ascending'. Is this the most beautiful piece of British music ever written? Little and Davis introduce another contender: Delius's haunting, rarely-heard Légende. Tickets: £34, £27, £23, £19, £14, £10 | ||

| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Jun-13 07:30pm Chamber Music: Idyllic Elgar Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 no. 1 was written during his early period when he was overflowing with new ideas and eager to infuse his exuberant and bold style into what was the baroque trio sonata. Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll in 1870 during what he termed the “happiest year of his life”, and presented three performances of the work as a birthday gift to his wife Cosima on Christmas Day. She wrote ecstatically about her present: “When I woke up I heard a sound, it grew ever louder, I could no longer imagine myself in a dream, music was sounding, and what music”! Similarly, Elgar’s Piano Quintet received equally glowing words from his wife: ”E. writing wonderful new music”. Written in the Elgars’ Sussex cottage where they were seeking an escape from a number of worries in the aftermath of World War 1, passages from Lady Elgar’s diary reveal the apparent programmatic inspiration for the Quintet: “a copse of bare trees, sad and sinister”. | Chester Cathedral, Chester CH1 2HU, United Kingdom Monday 3-Jun-13 07:30pm Ensemble Deva One of the most evocative and profound song cycles of the last 100 years is performed in the stunning surroundings and acoustic of Chester Cathedral. The most important non-operatic work of the 1940s, this setting of six English poems for tenor, solo horn and string orchestra was completed in 1943. It was the first large-scale work he had written specifically for Peter Pears, and it was also a response to the extraordinary artistry of the horn player Dennis Brain. The solo horn opens the work, adds perfectly imagined atmosphere to the songs, and then, in Pears’s words, “winds the work into stillness”. A setting of English poems on evening and night which, as sleep approaches, hints of the “worm in the rose, the sense of sin in the heart of man”. The amazing Giovanni Guzzo takes his Stradivarius to lead Chester’s very own Ensemble Deva. Allan Clayton has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting and sought after singers of his generation and can currently be seen at the Royal Opera House. Find out more about him here. Tim Jackson is principal horn at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and is much in demand also as a period french horn player and as a composer. He is a member of Ensemble Deva. Find out more about Tim here. | ||

![]() | ||
| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 9-Jun-13 07:30pm Orchestral: Around Britten and Bach We are delighted to welcome the Stratford-upon-Avon based Orchestra of the Swan for their Ulverston Festival debut. In Britten’s ‘Simple Symphony’ the composer reworks eight themes that he wrote in childhood, making them “fit for general consumption”. Bach wrote harpsichord concertos for performances in a coffee house in Leipzig – they are now commonly performed on the modern piano, and Haydn even suggested they could be performed on the fortepiano or pipe organ.Vaughan Williams’ mystical and atmospheric Tallis Fantasia has come to join the crowning glories of English orchestral music, with its unique effect in the division of the string section into two blocs who converse with each other from either end of the stalls. When he wrote the Introduction and Allegro, Elgar was an international celebrity with a string of major compositions under his belt. According to Elgar, the inspiration behind this string piece was a folk-tune, distantly-heard whilst holidaying in Wales. Elgar resurrected the baroque Concerto Grosso style, wherein a group of soloists alternately emerges from and blends back into the orchestral ranks - it’s a fitting end to a Festival that has demonstrated the pivotal influence Baroque styles played on much of the music we hear today. | ||

| Bedford Corn Exchange, Bedford MK40 1SL, United Kingdom Sunday 16-Jun-13 07:30pm Ashkenazy conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra in Bedford Elgar’s epic Violin Concerto was composed for the celebrated Viennese virtuoso Fritz Kreisler, who shortly before giving the 1910 world première in London vowed “I will shake the Queen’s Hall!” He obviously had the desired effect as according to one reviewer, “for a quarter of an hour they called and recalled the man [Elgar] who had achieved a triumph not only for himself, but also for England, and hailed him as master and hero.” Elgar’s own opinion was that “It’s good! Awfully emotional! Too emotional...but I love it.” Beethoven’s passion was for the countryside. “You ask me where my ideas come from” he once noted, “they come to me in the open air, in the woods, while walking, in the silence of the night, early in the morning”. The Pastoral Symphony, with its unambiguously bucolic movement titles, is the composer’s attempt to set these sounds and scenes in notes on paper. | ||
