Anyone who has seen it surely remembers the scene in which a spaceship dances majestically around the Earth to the sound of An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube) by Johann Strauss (Jr)… Music by Ligeti, Khachaturian, and Richard Strauss also helped to make the film what it is. | Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 07:30pm Piano Century: 1913 - 2013 With extracts from Prokofiev Sarcasms; Schoenberg Five Piano Pieces; Kurtág Jatékok; Harrison Birtwistle Harrison’s Clocks; music by Bartók, Cowell, Stockhausen, Carter, Pierre Boulez, Marco Stroppa, Tristan Murail and George Benjamin; and premieres of new commissions from young composers from the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme. A centenary tribute with a difference: Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads us on an extraordinary and brilliantly original tour of one hundred years of music featuring over twenty composers in one concert. Aimard’s itinerary takes in Kurtág’s whimsical games and Ives’ quirky fantasias and the ferocious momentum of Harrison Birtwistle and Ligeti. Along the way are fleeting glimpses familiar to Aldeburgh Festival audiences – music from recent guests George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Marco Stroppa. There are radical new compositional departures distilled at the keyboard in pivotal works by Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen; and Debussy, Murail, and Messiaen finding beauty in the seemingly infinite possibilities within the piano’s harmonic palette. There are moments that seem to question the piano’s role – Lachenmann’s ingenious, Guero – and (in Cage’s now infamous concept) even the nature of music itself.

| Klosterkirche Hennef, Bonn, Klosterstraße 2, 53773 Hennef (Sieg) Bonn, Germany Sunday 15-Sep-13 06:00pm "Repeat it!" With “Repeat it!” the recorder player Dorothee Oberlinger and the violinist Rüdiger Lotter have worked out a programme that spans the period between Hildegard von Bingen to the Baroque and on to the present day, and focuses on the idea of the ostinato. Above these constantly repeated bass and harmony foundations their two instruments enter into furious rivalry. The abbey church in Hennef provides a fitting context for this timeless musical style, and allows listeners to experience its meditative effect.

| Beethoven-Haus, Bonn, Bonn, Germany Friday 4-Oct-13 08:00pm "metamorphosis" "Imitation and modification” could form the secret heading to a number of Ligeti’s works, above all in relation to the oeuvre of Béla Bartók, who was felt for a long time by many Hungarian composers to be the role model they had to follow. Just as Ligeti, in his string quartet “Métamorphoses nocturnes”, slowly transforms a thematic germ cell into ever new “metamorphoses”, he has also developed the compositional style from the germ cell represented by Bartók. These metamorphoses are brought to listeners’ ears in the programme presented by the Cuarteto Casals.Image credit: Felix Broede | ||

![]() | ||
| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 13-Oct-13 07:30pm A Midsummer Night's Dream [Neumeier] Music by Mendelssohn, Felix (1809-1847)/Ligeti, György (1923-2006) Choreography by John Neumeier Why have composers and choreographers been fascinated for decades by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream? Maybe it is the historical period of the play, maybe the caste system, maybe the versatile stylistic means of writing and the tangled plot? Fairy tale characters like Oberon and Titania fight sensual and witty battles, next to figures from Greek mythology, such as Theseus and Hippolyta which cause great confusion in the life of a clumsy craftsman and a group of lovers from present times.
Choreographer John Neumeier created his version of Sommernachtstraum in 1977 and the piece has been a steady part of the Bavarian State Ballet's repertory since 1993. After a 10 year break, the revival will now return to the stage of the Nationaltheater.
Though the mastermind behind this creation is of American descend, it was made in and for the "Dance Country Germany". Proof lies in its unique and thoughtful, virtuosic approach to developing drama. After all, the complex mixture of musical layers would be worth a separate panel discussion. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's atmospheric musical score for Sommernachtstraum reflects the world of the mortals, while Györgi Ligeti's siren-esque organ pieces bring to mind the fairy kingdom depicted in Shakespeare's play. The craftsmen's dance is underlined by dominant opera paraphrases for the barrel organ which satirize even the noblest melodies.
As with the musical layers, together with his stage- and costume designer Jürgen Rose, Neumeier mixes the historical settings cleverly. What would be more suited to the sounds of Mendelsohn's score than a sweet Biedermeier set? An olive tree is a perfect symbol of the antique, mythology and fairy tales in one.
John Neumeier's Sommernachtstraum always has been a wonderful representation of an full-length classical ballet made in the ladder half of the 20th century, the 1970s in Germany. A time of departure from the narrative through Pina Bausch's work – a chapter that is also closed now, and is also being re-examined by today's dance artists and scholars.Tickets €8-€88. Written orders will be begin on June 20, 2013.

A time of departure from the narrative through Pina Bausch's work – a chapter that is also closed now, and is also being re-examined by today's dance artists and scholars. Tickets €8-€88. Written orders will be begin on June 20, 2013.

| Carnegie Hall: Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, New York City, NY, New York City, NY, United States Sunday 18-May-14 02:00pm Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra The “formidable technique and dynamism” (The New York Times) of podium personality Mariss Jansons is on full display in this concert of orchestral works that run the emotional gamut. Jansons leads his Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Brahms’s pastoral Second symphony and Ligeti’s Atmosphères, evoking a sense of timelessness in a web of dense sound textures and tonality. The orchestra is also joined by Gil Shaham for Berg’s Violin Concerto, which combines tonal style with 12-tone technique to examine life, death, and transfiguration. | ||
