![]() | ||
| Coronation Hall, Ulverston, Ulverston LA12 7LZ, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Jun-13 07:30pm Chamber Music: Idyllic Elgar Beethoven’s String Trio Op. 9 no. 1 was written during his early period when he was overflowing with new ideas and eager to infuse his exuberant and bold style into what was the baroque trio sonata. Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll in 1870 during what he termed the “happiest year of his life”, and presented three performances of the work as a birthday gift to his wife Cosima on Christmas Day. She wrote ecstatically about her present: “When I woke up I heard a sound, it grew ever louder, I could no longer imagine myself in a dream, music was sounding, and what music”! Similarly, Elgar’s Piano Quintet received equally glowing words from his wife: ”E. writing wonderful new music”. Written in the Elgars’ Sussex cottage where they were seeking an escape from a number of worries in the aftermath of World War 1, passages from Lady Elgar’s diary reveal the apparent programmatic inspiration for the Quintet: “a copse of bare trees, sad and sinister”. | Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 6-Jun-13 07:30pm Dohnányi conducts Philharmonia Orchestra in London At no time in musical history has a composer travelled so far as quickly as Beethoven in the Eroica Symphony. This is music that appears to breathe the air of a different planet, lacerating 18th-century sensibilities along the way. Not only is it longer than any symphony previously written, but the emotional content is startlingly raw, with brutal sforzandos rammed home, harmonic dissonances revelled in as never before, and fizzing virtuosity demanded of the players at every turn. Beethoven’s hearing was fast fading and by declaring himself ‘emperor’ his hero Napoleon had become ‘just another tyrant’. Music would never be the same again. | ||
