| Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 1-Dec-13 03:00pm Christmas Concert Winner of BBC Young Musician 2012, Laura van der Heijden is acknowledged as one of the finest artists of her generation. For her début with the RTWSO, she will perform the Cello Concerto No 1 by Saint-Saëns. This fluid, integrated piece has an inventive structural format showing influences of Liszt and Wagner. There is exquisite writing for the soloist, enabling the singing tone of the cello to shine through orchestral textures. Our family Christmas concert also features an entertaining mix of pieces by two French Romantic composers, Massenet and Chabrier, as well as a colourful, sensuous waltz by the Austro-Hungarian, Lehár. British works are represented in a tone poem by Coates and Britten’s witty and virtuosic rhapsody on God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, with variations that do not wander too far from home. Bryan Kelly offers us a new suite evoking a traditional Christmas celebration. Well-known carols are shaken up into a cocktail of sparkling sounds and beautifully decorated with festive embellishments. The RTWSO will give the first performance.
