| Het Muziektheater, Amsterdam, Waterlooplein 22, Amsterdam, Netherlands Tuesday 4-Jun-13 05:30pm In his only comic opera, Wagner distilled poetry and music into a single unified form that unfolds as an unbroken stream of music-dramatic dialogue. It became a singspiel, partly based on personal experience, about the romance between the bourgeois girl Eva Pogner and the knight Walther von Stolzing, who may only wed his beloved once he has won the annual singing contest. The cobbler Hans Sachs represents, on the one hand, the old guard as a member of the Guild of Mastersingers; on the other hand he is open to modernization and stimulates the knight’s artistic gifts, stoking the conflict between narrow-mindedness and true artistry – a theme certainly not unfamiliar to Wagner himself. Love triumphs in the end, thanks to Sachs’ closing address in which he praises the ‘master’s honour’, a typically German honour one might view with considerable scepticism: the Meistersinger finale was, after all, misused for political purposes.Running time 5 hours 25 minutes with two intervals, in German with Dutch and English surtitles.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk Marc Albrecht, Conductor David Alden, Director Thomas Johannes Mayer, Bass: Hans Sachs Alastair Miles, Bass: Pogner Pascal Pittie, Tenor: Kunz Vogelgesang Mattijs van de Woerd, Baritone: Konrad Nachtigall Adrian Eröd, Baritone: Sixtus Beckmesser Thomas Oliemans, Baritone: Fritz Kothner Brian Galliford, Tenor: Balthasar Zorn Roberto Saccà, Tenor: Walther von Stolzing Ana Maria Martinez, Soprano: Eva Sarah Castle, Mezzo-soprano: Magdalene Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest Koor van De Nederlandse Opera Marcel Beekman, Tenor: Ulrich Eisslinger | ||

| Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 04:30pm Wagner's Ring: Siegfried Opera North’s production of Wagner’s Ring combines both visual impact and great singing and playing. In the words of The Times on Das Rheingold, ‘Farnes has done many fine things at Opera North, but his pacing of this 150-minute sweep of music, his care about balance… and the sumptuousness of the orchestral textures – all this constitutes a massive achievement.’ In the penultimate part of this great tragedy of love and power, the hero Siegfried awakens the warrior maiden Brünnhilde, lying in a deep sleep surrounded by a magic fire, and makes her his wife. | Opernhaus, Zürich, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Wednesday 3-Jul-13 07:00pm Die Fliegende Holländer Heinrich Heine wrote the story of the seafarer who yearns for deliverance from a curse through the faithful love of a woman. The master of romantic irony pieced together a fictitious play from various seafaring sagas and created a brilliant parody of the romantic melodramas, which Richard Wagner, however, took seriously. In the unhappy hero, who will not give up his aim of sailing round a dangerous cape despite the severest of storms, Wagner recognised a man who does not simply accept the world order, but seeks to overthrow it, even if he is punished with a terrible curse. To the young composer and revolutionary, this man must have seemed a kindred spirit; equally so the young woman, whose life’s dream is to escape the narrow confines of her father’s house and rescue the seafarer. She is a woman who aspires to unconditional self-fulfilment. Against all resistance, she asserts her vision of a fulfilled existence, and takes to its logical extreme the idea of remaining true to herself. The encounter of the two figures ends tragically, but in Wagner’s eyes they do not fail because of the world; the world fails because of them. A few years later, Wagner stood on the barricades in Dresden in an attempt to transform into reality his dream of a world redeemed and determined by love…
In this production, two outstanding singers, Bryn Terfel and Anja Kampe, will be giving their débuts at Zurich Opera, and Matti Salminen can once again be heard as Daland. The young conductor Alain Altinoglu has already made the leap to some of the major opera houses. The Flying Dutchman is Director Andreas Homoki’s first production in Zurich.

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Sunday 14-Jul-13 05:00pm First Day of "Der Ring des Nibelungen"
The clash of the clans nourishes the battlefield. The Valkyries, the children of the god, are just instruments of the father to gather together an army of the dead for him.
Wotan’s progeny are to secure his power: the twins, Siegmund and Sieglinde, seem born to this task. The brother lands at the home of his enemy – finds his sister there after a separation of many years and wins her heart. All of this runs according to plan, and yet the two siblings have violated the laws. The father must sacrifice his son. Brünnhilde, his favorite daughter, defies her father for the first time and protects the incestuous couple – in vain.
On the first day of Der Ring des Nibelungen, in Die Walküre, first performed in 1870 in Munich, the father-god’s plans to undo the entanglements come to naught. At the end, his children are either murdered or punished and exiled. All Wotan can do is wait for the hero of the next generation – Sieglinde now carries him in her womb, the seed of her brother, somewhere on her flight through the forest.
New production.
