We’re delighted that she is joining Oxford Philomusica to perform Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto at the Sheldonian Theatre. The Orchestra will also showcase symphonic suites by two other great Russian composers: Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé and Stravinsky’s thrilling Firebird – the work that made the composer a star when he wrote it for the legendary Ballet Russes Company in 1910.Image credit: Decca / SImon Fowler

| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 30-May-13 07:30pm Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra London Tonight’s programme marks the centenary (29 May 1913) of one of the most famous premieres in musical history: Stravinsky’s primitivist ballet The Rite of Spring. Showered throughout by a torrential hail of farmyard noises from the gallery, the whole thing ended in uproar with the young conductor, Pierre Monteux, and his musicians fleeing for their lives. Puccini, who was in the Paris audience that night, described it as ‘the creation of a madman.’ Yet Stravinsky claimed that he was merely ‘the vessel through which the Rite passed.’ Opening the concert is Debussy’s no less groundbreaking Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune. ‘From that moment,’ wrote Pierre Boulez, ‘music began to beat with a new pulse’. | ||

| Sage: Hall One, Gateshead, Gateshead, United Kingdom Thursday 30-May-13 07:30pm Danse Concertantes “I feel certain it shall please” wrote Mozart upon finishing his Paris symphony after a series of frustrating false-starts in France. The new symphony did just that, brimming with an effervescence, hope and freshness that tuned directly in to the city’s love for the bold and gregarious. Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky and Prokofiev all lived in Paris after Mozart, their music never losing that elegance, élan and energy which its citizens so adore. | ||

The scandal of the première ended in a riot. This programme marks this centenary by recreating the programme that first audience heard – Chopin’s delightful waltzes in orchestral form, evoking the elegance of classical ballet, followed by the violence and mayhem of Stravinsky’s master work. Patrons are encouraged to refrain from rioting! As a tribute to the city where this took place, the programme begins with the Paris Symphony – Mozart’s salute to Parisian style.

Completing the programme is a powerful collaboration between four international choreographers – Sébastien Ramirez, Ivan Blackstock (BirdGang), Mafalda Deville and Pascal Merighi (guest artist, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch) – and an intergenerational cast, brought together to create a unique dance piece with a live orchestra playing Igor Stravinsky’s iconic The Rite of Spring.
In 1913, the unfamiliar sounds of The Rite of Spring were enough to ignite rage and rioting in a passionate public. 100 years later, prompted by recent riots, the cast of RIOT Offspring explore their own perceptions of rites, rituals and riots, creating a powerful piece of dance theatre.Music by Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971) Choreography by Sebastien Ramirez, Ivan Blackstock, Mafalda Deville, Pascal Merighi

![]() | ||
| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 07:30pm Piano Century: 1913 - 2013 With extracts from Prokofiev Sarcasms; Schoenberg Five Piano Pieces; Kurtág Jatékok; Harrison Birtwistle Harrison’s Clocks; music by Bartók, Cowell, Stockhausen, Carter, Pierre Boulez, Marco Stroppa, Tristan Murail and George Benjamin; and premieres of new commissions from young composers from the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme. A centenary tribute with a difference: Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads us on an extraordinary and brilliantly original tour of one hundred years of music featuring over twenty composers in one concert. Aimard’s itinerary takes in Kurtág’s whimsical games and Ives’ quirky fantasias and the ferocious momentum of Harrison Birtwistle and Ligeti. Along the way are fleeting glimpses familiar to Aldeburgh Festival audiences – music from recent guests George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Marco Stroppa. There are radical new compositional departures distilled at the keyboard in pivotal works by Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen; and Debussy, Murail, and Messiaen finding beauty in the seemingly infinite possibilities within the piano’s harmonic palette. There are moments that seem to question the piano’s role – Lachenmann’s ingenious, Guero – and (in Cage’s now infamous concept) even the nature of music itself. | ||
