| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Monday 10-Jun-13 07:30pm Sandrine Piau One of today’s most sought-after sopranos makes her Aldeburgh recital debut in an eye-catching programme. A great communicator who works on the
opera and concert hall stage, her reputation has been founded on superb characterful performances of baroque and classical music. Here however she
allies her sharp-edged clarity and easy unaffected warmth to nocturnal songs from the German Romantic tradition (the young Mendelssohn and Richard
Strauss). These are blended with an intoxicating selection of music from the turbulent decades that straddle the turn of the twentieth century. There is a thrilling potency to every footstep, every new departure taken by the young Berg, Schoenberg and Debussy. By contrast the cool detachment of Bitten’s idiosyncratic folk song arrangements seem to heighten the emotional directness of deeply-rooted opular songs from England, Scotland and the USA.

Britten composed his beautifully-crafted Elegy, Going down Hill on a Bicycle and Phantasy Quartet in his late teens while his Suite, for violin and piano, is more characteristically Britten, showing at 21 he had started to find his voice.

‘Remember that we will all die’, is the motto for this programme by and with Heinz Holliger. Ten years after his last appearance with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Swiss hobo player, composer and conductor returns with a programme centred
on death. The orchestra will play three of Holliger’s own works: two adaptations of ominous, late piano works by Liszt and the Dutch premiere of Ardeur noire, his homage to Debussy. Holliger sandwiches his own works between two contrasting paradigms of expressionism. Berg’s Violin Concerto was dedicated to Manon Gropius, who died at a young age, and constitutes Berg’s last finished composition. Finally, the Dutch premiere of Alagoana is performed, a ballet suite by Zimmermann based on an Indian myth of life and death.Tickets €40.50 - 22.50, SJP €36.20 - 30. Caught up in greedy games and seedy schemes, and surrounded by lovers driven to despair, Lulu makes an inexorable rise to the highest levels of power, money and fame. But her descent is just as swift. Twenty years on, as the scarred Lulu looks back on her life, she faces a squalid history of sex, murder and violence. Award-winning Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth has radically reworked Alban Berg’s unfinished 1934 opera for the 21st century, setting it against the backdrop of the US civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s and transporting audiences to the smoky jazz clubs of the Deep South. Neuwirth re-interprets Berg’s score for a jazz-inspired ‘Las Vegas’-style ensemble while also integrating her own distinctive voice to make a sound world that casts new light on the whole opera. This new production is conducted by leading contemporary music specialist Gerry Cornelius and staged by the acclaimed British director John Fulljames, with The Orchestra of Scottish Opera. A co-production with The Opera Group, Scottish Opera, Bregenzer Festspiele and Young Vic in association with the London Sinfonietta. Co-commissioned by The Opera Group and Komische Oper Berlin. | National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Thursday 3-Oct-13 08:00pm Wozzeck – a good man, who just wants to live his life. But the world around him strikes him down. It preys on his thoughts and triggers horrible anxieties in his soul. He struggles for words to explain himself, until his own utterance falls apart. Not even the woman he loves can understand him and becomes more and more alienated from him. Driven by the struggle to exist and unspeakable fear, pursued by the violence of his perverse fellow humans who feast on his terror, this Wozzeck hustles through life like a hunted animal until he can no longer endure the pressure and destroys his beloved and himself.
In the year of its creation, 1836, Georg Büchner’s drama, already pointed the way to the modern era with its terse, analytically sharp and ironic language. Some 80 years after it had come to be, on the eve of the First World War. Alban Berg discovered the fragment, which was all that remained of the play. Struck by the quintessential catastrophe of the “Wozzeck affair”, he created a score unique in the annals of 20th century music theatre to lament the loss of fallen mankind and a world on the brink of decay. Stage director Andreas Kriegenburg tells of how life can turn into a horrifying nightmare from which there is no awakening, and in which the dreamer himself finally becomes a monster.

| Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 20-Dec-13 07:30pm Wagner's Prelude to Tristan and Isolde Celebrated American soprano Christine Brewer is a very special guest for this sumptuous evening of Wagner, Strauss and composers of the Second Viennese school, conducted by the Edward Gardner of English National Opera. Tristan and Isolde and the Wesendonck- Lieder belong to the same turbulent period of Wagner’s life, when he was amorously involved with Mathilde Wesendonck. His settings of her poetry share the same heady chromaticism and ecstatic heights as Tristan, and find an echo in Strauss’s lavish tone poem Death and Transfiguration. Webern’s masterly Passacaglia anticipates the exquisitely-heard, Expressionist world of Berg’s Seven Early Songs. Tickets £10 - 32. | ||

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 11-Jan-14 08:15pm Marc-André Hamelin ‘Gewoonweg formidabel’, schreef The Boston Globe over Marc-André Hamelin.
