| Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. We are thus close to many a secret when we hear “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”. Hans Weigel. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Tuesday 23-Mar-10 19:00 Zurich Opera “Simon Boccanegra” is not worse than many of my other operas that have had better luck, but this one perhaps needs a more polished presentation and an audience that wants to listen. – We poor vagrants, charlatans and whatever else you want to call us, we have to sell our efforts, ideas and passions for the sake of Mammon, and for three lire the audience buys the right to boo or applaud us. Our destiny is to resign to it: that is all. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Saturday 10-Apr-10 17:00 Zurich Opera On his arrival in Nuremberg, Walther von Stolzing, a young knight from Franken, has fallen in love with Eva at first sight. However, she is promised to the winner of the Meistersingers’ singing contest that is to take place the next day – so Stolzing also wants to take part in the competition. However, his song is not accepted; only when Hans Sachs takes Stolzing under his wing and teaches him the rules of singing does the wild, uncultivated natural talent become a reflective artist who ends up winning the contest and Eva as his wife. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Sunday 11-Apr-10 14:00 Die Zauberflöte Zurich Opera The young prince Tamino is searching for Pamina, the original of the portrait he has seen. The Queen of the Night is searching for her abducted daughter and the seven-fold sun circle, symbol of her power. Papageno is searching for a girl or a young woman. That is why Tamino and Papageno set off for the kingdom of Sarastro, where Pamina is held captive. There, however, Sarastro, the adversary of the starry queen, proves to be a ruler who preaches reason and has noble aims. He imposes difficult trials on the young people, which take Tamino and Pamina to their limits, while Papageno remains attached to earthly pleasures. Fortunately, three wise boys and the music of the magic flute and the glockenspiel, which makes “even wild animals feel joy”, are there to help in case of emergency. However, Red Beard continues his wicked machinations, endowing his daughter Odile with Odette’s features. Siegfried is deceived, falls for Odile and betrays Odette, and the fairy tale ends in tragedy. Zurich Opera Orchestra Vladimir Fedoseyev, Conductor | ||

| Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Sunday 25-Apr-10 20:00 Zurich Opera Signor Flauto has suggested that I write the opera in the autumn that I should have composed in June. I have looked at various plots to which your censorious nature would probably object, although one might pass muster: Schiller’s “Intrigue and Love”. It’s a magnificent drama, full of passion and theatrically very effective. Giuseppe Verdi to Salvatore Cammarano, 31 August 1846. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Saturday 1-May-10 17:00 Zurich Opera On his arrival in Nuremberg, Walther von Stolzing, a young knight from Franken, has fallen in love with Eva at first sight. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Sunday 2-May-10 14:00 Zurich Opera On her estate, the shy Tatiana dreams of great love – until Lenskij, her sister Olga’s admirer, introduces her to his new friend Eugen Onegin one day. Tatiana is immediately enamoured of Onegin, but the latter does not return her love; on the contrary, he declares to her that he sees marriage as torture. When Onegin dances only with Olga at a party in order to provoke Tatiana, Lenskij challenges him to a duel – and is killed. Years later, Tatiana and Onegin meet again; Onegin now feels deeply for Tatiana. However, she is now married; Onegin is forced to realise, too late, that he has ruined his own life. Conductor Fedoseyev, who as a Tchaikovsky connoisseur devotes all his attention to the score’s quiet sounds, elastic tempi and lyrical colours, is a stroke of luck for the Zurich production. He does not lead the Opera Orchestra and his ensemble through the evening as a precise “technician”, but with a subtle feeling for the temperatures of the music, and thus transports much of Tchaikovsky’s artistic vision into the present, beyond mere enjoyment. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 13-May-10 14:00 Ein Sommernachtstraum / A Midsummer Night's Dream A Midsummer Night's Dream [Spoerli] Zürcher BallettMusic by Mendelssohn, Felix (1809-1847)/Reich, Steve (b. 1936)/Glass, Philip (b. 1937) Choreography by Heinz Spoerli Many people have midsummer night's dreams. In Zurich, Heinz Spoerli's dreams are bolder and more complex. He recounts how stage hands and ballet dancers find each other in their common dream of the theatre. The result is a great, celebrated evening of neoclassical ballet. Spoerli has choreographed «Midsummer Night's Dream» four times, deploying increasingly subtle artistic devices in each version. In Zurich, his ballet ends with a rare experience: he imbues abstract dance with the specific emotional values of narrative ballet – love as dissolution in sound, colour and pure movement.
