| Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Friday 7-Jan-11 07:30pm Madama Butterfly has been the start of many a love affair. Even as Cio-Cio-San and Pinkerton are sharing their hopes and dreams, thousands are falling in love with the music, the emotion, the moment – the all enveloping experience that is opera. One of Opera Australia’s most beautiful productions returns, ready to capture your imagination and your heart, whether for the first time or all over again. The sculptural, richly-coloured costumes, gracious choreography and spare elegance of Moffatt Oxenbould’s legendary production complement the lush, romantic sound of Puccini’s score in this living artwork. If you ever needed another reason to see Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Patricia Racette is it. This American soprano is a favourite at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, where her performances of Puccini’s great heroines are legendary. Now she comes to Sydney for one of the toughest roles of them all, the exquisite Cio-Cio-San. She joins a cast of Opera Australia favourites including Rosario La Spina as Pinkerton and Jacqueline Dark as Suzuki, with Philippe Auguin conducting. Later in the season, Antoinette Halloran takes over the title role with David Corcoran as Pinkerton. Performed in Italian with English surtitles. Running time: two hours and forty-five minutes including one twenty-minute interval. Philippe Auguin, Conductor Moffat Oxenbould, Director Patricia Racette, Soprano: Cio Cio San (Madama Butterfly) Rosario la Spina, Tenor: Pinkerton Jacqueline Dark, Mezzo-soprano: Suzuki Barry Ryan, Baritone: Sharpless Opera Australia Chorus Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra | ||

This raven-haired gypsy will sing her way out of gaol and into your heart before you know it. Just watch her. See her dance the Seguedilla. Hear her sing those dark, lingering melodies and don’t be surprised if you fall under her spell. Francesca Zambello’s celebrated production of Carmen is a vivid evocation of dust, heat and danger under the wide Spanish skies. From the bustling town square to the bandits’ cave to the bullring, the colours, the costumes, the gypsy songs and sultry moves leap off the stage. All that is needed to complete this picture is a great artist to perform the role of Carmen. Opera Australia is thrilled to introduce one of the world’s leading new interpreters of this role, Israeli born mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham. Described in The Times as ‘unmissable’, she is a Carmen to die for. Two more great singers, Julian Gavin and Teddy Tahu Rhodes, get to fight over her as Don José and Escamillo, and young French conductor Guillaume Tourniaire shares the season with Ollivier-Philippe Cunéo. Later in the season, see Milijana Nikolic in the title role, paired with Rosario La Spina as Don José and Shane Lowrencev as Escamillo. Do not miss this colourful and exotic production, featuring all-time favourites including the ‘Toreador’s Song’ and Carmen’s seductive ‘Habanera’. Performed in French with English surtitles. Running time: two hours and fifty minutes including one twenty-minute interval. | The Arts Centre, Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Wednesday 20-Apr-11 07:30pm Macbeth is a rough brew of the psychological, political and supernatural When three witches accost Macbeth and predict great things for the loyal soldier he is shocked but elated. However, his wife cannot resist making a murderous plan to hasten fate along. As one murder becomes many the once powerful couple become a pawn of ambition, fatally embroiled in their own plot. Bringing this dark tale of death to life is Canadian René Richard Cyr, who makes his directorial debut with Opera Australia with this striking production. A monumental set is transformed by living scenery and a grand chorus, who deliver some of the most powerful moments of the night. Verdi’s music is by turns exhilarating and terrifying, with spine-tingling choruses giving way to intimate arias. Two remarkable singers take on the notoriously difficult roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Michael Lewis and Elizabeth Connell have proved themselves in many Verdi roles, and so it is with great excitement that we look forward to hearing them in this new production. They are joined by Jud Arthur as Banquo and Rosario La Spina as Macduff, with young Australian Verdi expert Simon Hewett conducting. Performed in Italian with English surtitles. Running time: Approximately two hours and thirty five minutes including one twenty-minute interval. A co-production with Opéra de Montréal.
