| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, United Kingdom Sunday 25-Apr-10 19:30 Laughter and Tears No composer captured the spirit of his times quite like Dmitri Shostakovich – but even by his standards, his Sixth Symphony is almost too honest for comfort. Written in 1939, as Europe teetered uneasily on the brink of war, it's an intense and unforgettable masterpiece, in which heartfelt sorrow jostles with desperate laughter. It's a very powerful contrast to the razor-sharp hilarity of Richard Strauss' tone-poem– and the joyous grace of Mozart's sublime final piano concerto. The superb British pianist Steven Osborne is the soloist in a work as playful as it is profound. RLPO Vasily Petrenko, Conductor Steven Osborne, Piano | ||

| Wigmore Hall, London, United Kingdom Thursday 13-May-10 19:30 Michael Collins clarinet; Steven Osborne piano A star pairing of Britain’s finest clarinet virtuoso with one of our most imaginative and stimulating pianists. Their programme is virtually a conspectus of a century’s clarinet-and-piano highlights ranging from Schumann’s lyrical and passionate Fantasy Pieces of 1849 to one of Brahms’s late-flowering masterpieces for Richard Mühlfeld of the legendary Meiningen orchestra. It then moves on to a French feast for the ear from old veteran Saint-Saëns at the end of his life, via some competition fireworks, to Olivier Messiaen as prisoner of war in 1941. | Birmingham Symphony Hall, Broad Street, Birmingham B1, United Kingdom Thursday 27-May-10 19:30 Russian Classics Music director of Moscow’s legendary Bolshoi Theatre since 2001, Alexander Vedernikov makes his CBSO debut with a trio of very different Russian masterpieces. Rimsky’s colourful overture celebrates the Russian Orthodox Easter in a riot of bells and orchestral brilliance, while Prokofiev’s superb post-war symphony strikes a more serious mood in music of great intensity and power. His sometime friend Shostakovich is also famous for his serious symphonies, but this tuneful piano concerto finds him in a lighter mood, and is played for us by the versatile Scottish pianist who has entertained CBSO audiences in music from Mozart to Messiaen. | Wigmore Hall, London, United Kingdom Monday 7-Jun-10 13:00 Steven Osborne, piano Award-winning pianist Steven Osborne is equally at home in challenging piano concertos by Britten and Tippett as he is on the recital platform in an increasingly wide range of repertoire. Recently acclaimed for an album of Rachmaninov’s complete Preludes, his account of the Corelli Variations will be eagerly anticipated for the insight it is likely to provide. As a curtainraiser Osborne plays some of Beethoven’s later piano pieces which capture a rare blend of the cryptic and the humorous. Steven Osborne, Piano | ||

Conductor and composer Gunther Schuller has an extraordinary career that spans performing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and jamming alongside Miles Davis, making him the ideal conductor for tonight’s concert. Aaron Copland made use of folk songs such as Camptown Races and quotations from Abraham Lincoln, including excerpts from his Gettysburg Address, to create a homage to America’s great President. Steven Osborne joins the orchestra for Gershwin’s quintessentially American Rhapsody in Blue, performed here in its jazziest incarnation. Charles Ives’s Fourth Symphony brings this concert to a colourful climax.
