City Chorus - A Spring Evening of Music by Haydns, Mozarts and Mendelssohns A celebration of musical genius shared by members of the same families, with works for solo soprano, choir and string ensemble by the Haydn brothers (Franz Joseph and Johann Michael); father and son (Leopold and Wolfgang) Mozart; and brother and sister (Felix and Fanny) Mendelssohn.
Come and enjoy well-known and much-loved choral classics such as Mendelssohn’s Hear my Prayer (which includes O for the wings of a dove) and Mozart’s Ave Verum and Laudate Dominum, together with a rare chance to hear beautiful music by historically overshadowed, yet extremely talented, composers.
In recognition of City Chorus’s commitment to exploring interesting and lesser-known repertoire, this concert has generously been supported by the Music Reprieval Trust.
For further information, please long on the City Chorus website..

Church of the Holy Cross, Church Street, Mark TA9 4NF, United Kingdom Saturday 27-Mar-10 19:30
Concert by the Phoenix Singers - Youth and Tradition In ‘Youth and tradition’ the youthful compositions of 19th, 20th and 21st century composers is the focus of a programme of music to be given by The Phoenix Singers, a Taunton based mixed choir, on Saturday, 27th March, (7.30pm) in the Church of the Holy Cross, Mark. The concert is a wonderful opportunity to hear fresh, youthful and easily accessible music written by young minds.
All the pieces were written by people between the ages 18 and 20 and who were later to become established composers. In 1842, Peter Cornelius, who was 18 at the time, wrote a number of beautiful choral songs of which The Phoenix Singers will sing two examples. The young American composer, Eric Whitacre, was just 20 years old when he wrote his Three Flower Songs in 1990. Up to that point Whitacre had had very little music training but since has made a huge impact on the world-wide choral scene. The Scottish composer, James MacMillan, was still at school in 1977 when he wrote part of his Missa Brevis for his school choir. Herbert Howells wrote his Mass in the Dorian Mode for Westminster Cathedral choir in 1912 while still 20. These compositions clearly demonstrate young and already accomplished composers acknowledging the traditions and techniques of their forebears while stamping on their music something of their own very individual style.
Tickets can be ordered on line by going to the Phoenix Singers web site.

The Voice in the Violin - A journey through Italian violin music from Monteverdi to Corelli Enrico Onofri was among the first generation of modern-day Italian Baroque violinists, and is still one of the most exciting in performance. Ahead of tomorrow's appearance with the European Union Baroque Orchestra, he brings his crack chamber ensemble Imaginarium to explore the elating first hundred years in the concert life of the violin, during which it progressed from elaborations of vocal compositions by Monteverdi and Rore, through the first specially-composed pieces by the likes of Cima, Castello and Fontana, to the fully-fledged eloquence of sonatas by Corelli and Vivaldi.
'Onofri is spellbinding.'

Cameron Carpenter, organ Cameron Carpenter, the Grammy-nominated American organist, has been compared to Fred Astaire, The Scissor Sisters and Liberace. He is known for his intensely personal, flamboyant performances with a repertoire spanning both organ and piano literature. From his use of colour to the concert clothes and organ shoes he designs, his approach to the organ is unique.
Mr Carpenter's programme will be announced from the stage, based upon discoveries made during rehearsal. Always performing from memory, he draws repertoire from virtuoso organ music such as Bach, Demessieux and Dupré; his own transcriptions of piano and orchestral litertaure such as Chopin, Mahler and Mussorgsky; his own compositions and arragements of film music; and his own treatments of pop and folk tunes in brilliant improvisations.

Oratorio • Betulia liberata Pietro Metastasio’s libretto for Betulia liberata is among the most widely set oratorio texts by the Viennese court poet. Niccolò Jommelli, who was educated in Naples and worked for many years at the Württemberg court, set the libretto in 1743. Besides sacred music, Jommelli’s fame is above all based on his operas. Although he also wrote comical operas, he is mainly one of the most characteristic composers of opera seria in the mid-18th century.
