| Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Monday 15-Mar-10 18:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. Running time about 5 hours. Since he visited the The Norwegian National Opera with Julius Caesar in 2005 and 2007, Stefan Herheim has strengthened his position as one of Europe's most exciting directors. In March he returns with a major new production of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. This work has been long in the making. Tannhäuser's opening night in Dresden in 1845 was a triumph. However, Richard Wagner was never entirely happy with it and revised the opera several times. Fifteen years after the first performance he radically extended the mount of Venus scene and introduced this with a ballet in a groundbreaking new tonal language. This led to the most infamous scandal in opera history. That was in Paris in March 1860, and exactly 150 years later the National Opera is presenting this version for the first time in Norway. In his possessed quest for his true self, Wagner's antihero, the minnesinger Tannhäuser, is torn between lustful ecstasy and deep devotion – brought to life through Venus, the erotic goddess, and Elisabeth, who represents pure, devotional love. Tannhäuser is brutally wrenched between these extreme opposites. In his despair he sets out on a pilgrim journey to the Pope in Rome to receive absolution. One of the numerous musical highlights in this work is his account of this painful experience. Christian Badea, Conductor Stefan Herheim, Director John Keyes, Tenor: Tannhäuser Elisabet Strid, Soprano: Elisabeth Judit Németh, Mezzo-soprano: Venus Magne Fremmerlid, Bass: Landgraf Hermann Olaf Bär, Baritone: Wolfram von Eschenbach Norwegian Opera Orchestra | ||

It centers on a single frantic day in the life of Aguas Frescas, the castle of Count Almaviva. The Count has designs on Susanna, maid of the Countess. Susanna is to be married this very day to the count’s valet, Figaro, which doesn’t stand in the way of the Count’s keeping an assignation with her. But he reckons without Figaro and Susanna who – aided by the Countess – conspire to teach the philandering Count a lesson. Others figuring prominently in the plot are the amorous young page, Cherubino; an older couple, Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina, who turn out to be Figaro’s parents, to his amazement; Susanna’s devious music master, Basilio; and Antonio, the Count’s gardener. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Monday 15-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production. Puccini s great aria, 'Vissi d'arte', is a moment when time stands still. Who could resist such a heartbreaking appeal? And who could resist the glorious voice of Nicole Youl in the title role of Opera Australia's first new production of Puccini's Tosca for nearly thirty years? Although we think of Puccini as the ultimate romantic, Tosca is anything but. There is love, but there is also jealousy, lust and murder. In this new production, originally created for Opera North, director Christopher Alden meets the casual brutality and violence head on. An evocative set, designed by Charles Edwards, locates the action in a run-down church vestry with a confessional which serves first as a hiding place for Angelotti and later as a torture chamber. The result is hugely powerful. | Lincoln Center: Metropolitan Opera House, New York City 10023, United States Monday 15-Mar-10 20:00 Metropolitan Opera Riccardo Muti, a champion of the Verdian tradition, makes his Met debut with one of the composer’s rousing early operas. This story of civilization’s encounter with barbarism is explored in a new production by director Pierre Audi. Some of the brightest lights in contemporary design, including Miuccia Prada and the architecture team of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (the 2008 Beijing Olympics “Bird’s Nest” stadium), have created the costumes and scenery. “Our approach is to stay very close to the descriptions supported by Verdi: destruction, rubble, lagoon, forest, darkness—all in a very naturalistic way,” explain Herzog and de Meuron. Ildar Abdrazakov sings the title role, joined by Violeta Urmana, Ramón Vargas, and Carlos Alvarez. The police chief Scarpia is after Cavaradossi’s capricious sweetheart, the singer Tosca. He brings together her jealousy and tendency to histrionics with his own interests in making her his own, and at the same time clearing his rival Cavaradossi and his political opponent Angelotti out of the way. A diabolical game begins, in which Tosca recognises to late that it is not she who is deceiving Scarpia, but him deceiving her. She betrays Angelotti, who commits suicide. Scarpia promises her a mock execution of Cavaradossi, who helped Angelotti escape. When the time comes for her to pay the price – belonging to him – she kills him. The mock execution turns out to be a deception. Tosca kills herself. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Tuesday 16-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. We are thus close to many a secret when we hear “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”. Hans Weigel. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Tuesday 16-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia It has to be one of Opera Australia's most celebrated productions. Inspired by Shakespeare's poetry and Benjamin Britten's music, visionary director Baz Luhrmann dreamt up a colour-drenched realm of midsummer magic where Indian gods, British colonials and rustic clowns collided, colluded and sometimes fell in love. Now A Midsummer Night's Dream is back. It all starts with a boy. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. Meanwhile, a merry band of mortals, including four lovers and some rough and ready thespians, have wandered into the fairies realm. | The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Tuesday 16-Mar-10 19:30 The Elixir of Love English National Opera The most often performed opera in Italy for two decades after its premiere, Donizetti's The Elixir of Love is still the most popular operatic ‘rom com' of all. Jonathan Miller's staging affectionately relocates the action from 19th century rural Italy to small-town ‘50s America. One of today's highest-flying young lyric tenors, John Tessier made a sensational ENO debut in the 2008 revival of Rossini's The Barber of Seville; he now returns as Nemorino, the lovesick young mechanic who believes that a travelling salesman (played by comic maestro AndrewShore) really can cure his broken heart. With The Elixir of Love running alongside Lucia di Lammermoor, ENO audiences have a rare chance to relish both the comic and tragic sides of Donizetti's operatic genius.

| Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production. | Oper Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany Friday 19-Mar-10 19:00 Oper Frankfurt It seems improbable that it is possible to find new aspects in an opera like Così fan tutte today, but that is precisely what Christof Loy managed to achieve in his Frankfurt production. The white, sparse stage design - without any furniture and with only minimal requisites - works like a magnifying glass; focussing the attention entirely on the performers and their reactions to events. A loving look at the two couples unravels, young, inexperienced people who are forced to become more understanding and mature. Everything in this production is felt and developed through the music. Dramatic moments of despair, fun, tomfoolery and a profound look at the being and nature of love. This production was enthusiastically and unanimously praised by the public and press: Christof Loy had clearly hit a nerve with his production of Così fan tutte - for which he was voted Director of the Year and awarded the Faust Prize by the German Bühnenverein. This production now returns to the stage, with some changes to the cast. Sung in Italian with German surtitles. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Friday 19-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia It has to be one of Opera Australia's most celebrated productions. As the night plays out Oberon ends up catching more than he expects.
