| Oper Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany Sunday 14-Mar-10 19:00 Oper Frankfurt They all meet on Alcina's magic island: heroes, lovers, happy and rejected people. It seems as if incompatible triangular constellations and motives from Ariostos' epos grow together in Vivaldi's score, creating bewildering and fantastical situations. Orlando, who is not very popular, blows his top: he loves Angelica, who has fallen in love with Medoro and who seeks Alcina's help to get rid of the annoying admirer. Alcina, always looking out for a new man uses her magic to try and bend Ruggiero, Bradamante's bridegroom, to her will. But Bradamante is more powerful than her magic and they all join forces against Alcina. Angelica and Medoro's love for one another is driving Orlando mad, so mad that he smashes a statue, which destroys Alcina's power. Released from his madness he renounces and finds true happiness. The times when Vivaldi was marked down as a purely instrumental composer are over. His 67 operas (written between 1713 and 1741) made this venetian, alongside Alessandro Scarlatti, one of the most fruitful operatic composers of his time. Orlando Furioso marked the exact middle point of Vivaldi's operatic career; fourteen years earlier his first opera, Ottone in villa, was performed for the first time and fourteen years later he died, before his last opera was performed in Vienna. In Orlando Furioso Vivaldi disolved the conventional form of dramma per musica, introducing confusion, intertwined love stories and new musical methods. His musical portraits are believable, profound and - despite the firmly aria forms - always inspired. Orlando Furioso's unconventional dramaturgy and expressive music make it one of Vivaldi's most important operas. Sung in Italian with German surtitles. In 1885, Gilbert had the inspired idea of transporting mid-Victorian England into an oriental setting in a hilarious tale poking delicious fun at the politics and politicians of the day. Gilbert’s witty lyrics introduce The Mikado’s comic characters and Sullivan’s bountiful score is a sparkling gem, speeding the story along with a host of toe-tapping greats, including ‘Three Little Maids from School’, ‘Tit-Willow’, 'The Sun, Whose Rays’ and ‘The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring’. | Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Monday 15-Mar-10 18:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. Running time about 5 hours. Since he visited the The Norwegian National Opera with Julius Caesar in 2005 and 2007, Stefan Herheim has strengthened his position as one of Europe's most exciting directors. In March he returns with a major new production of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. This work has been long in the making. Tannhäuser's opening night in Dresden in 1845 was a triumph. However, Richard Wagner was never entirely happy with it and revised the opera several times. Fifteen years after the first performance he radically extended the mount of Venus scene and introduced this with a ballet in a groundbreaking new tonal language. This led to the most infamous scandal in opera history. That was in Paris in March 1860, and exactly 150 years later the National Opera is presenting this version for the first time in Norway. In his possessed quest for his true self, Wagner's antihero, the minnesinger Tannhäuser, is torn between lustful ecstasy and deep devotion – brought to life through Venus, the erotic goddess, and Elisabeth, who represents pure, devotional love. Tannhäuser is brutally wrenched between these extreme opposites. In his despair he sets out on a pilgrim journey to the Pope in Rome to receive absolution. One of the numerous musical highlights in this work is his account of this painful experience. | The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Monday 15-Mar-10 19:30 English National Opera David Alden follows his double Olivier Award-winning production of Janacek's Jenufa with a new staging of the Czech composer's later lyrical masterpiece, Katya Kabanova. A claustrophobically intense yet heart-rending study of sexual morality within a close-knit community, it was inspired by Janacek's erotic obsession with a younger married woman. Stunning singing actress Patricia Racette makes her ENO debut as the passionate soul trapped in a loveless marriage, with Stuart Skelton (a sensational Peter Grimes in another Alden staging in 2009) as the stranger who offers her a brief hope of happiness. Janacek's most lyrically emotional score is conducted by Mark Wigglesworth with an outstanding cast also featuring Susan Bickley, Clive Bayley, John Graham-Hall, Anna Grevelius and Alfie Boe. | Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Monday 15-Mar-10 19:30 In Italian with projected English translations. “La folle journée” (“The Crazy Day”) was the subtitle of Beaumarchais’ comedy on which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart based his opera, one of the greatest creations in the entire repertoire. It centers on a single frantic day in the life of Aguas Frescas, the castle of Count Almaviva. The Count has designs on Susanna, maid of the Countess. Susanna is to be married this very day to the count’s valet, Figaro, which doesn’t stand in the way of the Count’s keeping an assignation with her. But he reckons without Figaro and Susanna who – aided by the Countess – conspire to teach the philandering Count a lesson. Others figuring prominently in the plot are the amorous young page, Cherubino; an older couple, Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina, who turn out to be Figaro’s parents, to his amazement; Susanna’s devious music master, Basilio; and Antonio, the Count’s gardener. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Tuesday 16-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. We are thus close to many a secret when we hear “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”. Hans Weigel. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. | Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. Running time 2 hours 30 minutes. After working on grand pieces such as Salome, Elektra and The Knight of the Rose, the composer Richard Strauss and poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal arrived at a new and unusual project: Ariadne auf Naxos. This is an opera about an opera - at the Opera. Proceedings take place at the magnificent residence of the richest man in Vienna who is hosting a party. He commands a tragic opera, but fears that it will be too heavy and droll for its selected audience. He therefore additionally hires a commedia dell'arte troupe (troupe of Italian jesters) to present introductory entertainment. This gives rise to the originators' ingenious dramaturgy: the Count's courtier announces a completely necessary change. The climax of the evening is a huge fireworks display at midnight. Due to lack of time it is decided that the comedy and tragedy must be performed simultaneously! This became one of the Norwegian Opera's greatest successes, both amongst critics and audiences at Youngstorget following the opening night in 2000. "Breakneck night with the stars", wrote Dagbladet. "A joy", was VG's opinion, who gave the performance, directed by Martin Duncan, 5 points out of 6. | Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 In French with projected English translations. La damnation de Faust (premiere Paris, 1846) is Lyric’s first production of any Berlioz work. Classified by the composer as a “dramatic legend,” Damnation has often been heard in concert form, and in that guise has always been hugely successful with major orchestras worldwide. In recent decades some major operatic venues have staged it with enormous success internationally. The familiar dramatic events of the work – the disillusion of Faust and his contemplation of suicide, his encounter with the devil in the person of Méphistophélès, the exuberance of the student Brander, Faust’s initial encounter with the innocent Marguerite and the catastrophic results of their romance – are given incomparable freshness by Berlioz, with episode after episode that enchants the ear: the world-famous “Hungarian March”; the devil’s brilliant solos; Faust’s ravishing invocation to nature; and Marguerite’s heartfelt “King of Thulé” ballad and devastating song of longing for Faust (“D’amour, l’ardente flamme,” one of the supreme achievements of Berlioz’s entire career). There are also immensely challenging roles for chorus members, who play peasants, students, gnomes, sylphs, and heavenly spirits. | The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 English National Opera David Alden follows his double Olivier Award-winning production of Janacek's Jenufa with a new staging of the Czech composer's later lyrical masterpiece, Katya Kabanova. No-one forgets the opening line of Peter Carey’s darkly comic fable, which charts the adventures of Harry Joy, an advertising executive who, after having a close encounter with death, finds himself sucked into a Kafkaesque series of events. In 2010 the lights go up on a new opera based on Bliss, commissioned by Opera Australia, directed by Neil Armfield, starring Peter Coleman-Wright and conducted by Elgar Howarth, who has conducted many world premieres of new works. Brett Dean is one of the most exciting composers to have emerged in the world of classical music in recent years. His music is by turns fascinating, atmospheric and disarmingly beautiful. Amanda Holden is an award-winning translator and librettist who has written more than fifty works for the stage. The combination of Brett Dean’s music, Amanda Holden’s words and Peter Carey’s kaleidoscopic imagination is a potent one. Add in the directorial vision of Neil Armfield, the choreography of Kate Champion and the electrifying stage presence of Peter Coleman-Wright, and this new production will be dynamite. | Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Thursday 18-Mar-10 14:00 In Italian with projected English translations. | Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Thursday 18-Mar-10 18:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. | Opera House /Oopperan päänäyttämö, Helsinginkatu 58 PL 176, Helsinki 00250, Finland Friday 19-Mar-10 19:00 Finnish National Opera Governor Riccardo is in love with Amelia, the wife of Renato. This gives Renato an excellent reason to join a conspiracy against the Governor. At a fancy dress ball, Renato takes his vengeance. Verdi took as the subject for his opera the historical assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, but censorship required the action and characters to be transposed to Boston. The last time that Un ballo in maschera was produced at the Finnish National Opera, the original libretto had been restored. | Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Friday 19-Mar-10 19:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. | Oper Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany Friday 19-Mar-10 19:00 Oper Frankfurt It seems improbable that it is possible to find new aspects in an opera like Così fan tutte today, but that is precisely what Christof Loy managed to achieve in his Frankfurt production. The white, sparse stage design - without any furniture and with only minimal requisites - works like a magnifying glass; focussing the attention entirely on the performers and their reactions to events. A loving look at the two couples unravels, young, inexperienced people who are forced to become more understanding and mature. Everything in this production is felt and developed through the music. Dramatic moments of despair, fun, tomfoolery and a profound look at the being and nature of love. This production was enthusiastically and unanimously praised by the public and press: Christof Loy had clearly hit a nerve with his production of Così fan tutte - for which he was voted Director of the Year and awarded the Faust Prize by the German Bühnenverein. This production now returns to the stage, with some changes to the cast. Sung in Italian with German surtitles. Yuval Zorn, Conductor Christof Loy, Director Juanita Lascarro, Soprano: Fiordiligi Jenny Carlstedt, Mezzo-soprano: Dorabella Trevor Scheunemann, Bass: Guglielmo Jeremy Ovenden, Tenor: Ferrando | ||
