| Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Monday 15-Mar-10 18:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. Running time about 5 hours. Since he visited the The Norwegian National Opera with Julius Caesar in 2005 and 2007, Stefan Herheim has strengthened his position as one of Europe's most exciting directors. In March he returns with a major new production of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. This work has been long in the making. Tannhäuser's opening night in Dresden in 1845 was a triumph. However, Richard Wagner was never entirely happy with it and revised the opera several times. Fifteen years after the first performance he radically extended the mount of Venus scene and introduced this with a ballet in a groundbreaking new tonal language. This led to the most infamous scandal in opera history. That was in Paris in March 1860, and exactly 150 years later the National Opera is presenting this version for the first time in Norway. In his possessed quest for his true self, Wagner's antihero, the minnesinger Tannhäuser, is torn between lustful ecstasy and deep devotion – brought to life through Venus, the erotic goddess, and Elisabeth, who represents pure, devotional love. Tannhäuser is brutally wrenched between these extreme opposites. In his despair he sets out on a pilgrim journey to the Pope in Rome to receive absolution. One of the numerous musical highlights in this work is his account of this painful experience. Christian Badea, Conductor Stefan Herheim, Director John Keyes, Tenor: Tannhäuser Elisabet Strid, Soprano: Elisabeth Judit Németh, Mezzo-soprano: Venus Magne Fremmerlid, Bass: Landgraf Hermann Olaf Bär, Baritone: Wolfram von Eschenbach Norwegian Opera Orchestra | ||

| Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Monday 15-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production. Puccini s great aria, 'Vissi d'arte', is a moment when time stands still. Who could resist such a heartbreaking appeal? And who could resist the glorious voice of Nicole Youl in the title role of Opera Australia's first new production of Puccini's Tosca for nearly thirty years? Although we think of Puccini as the ultimate romantic, Tosca is anything but. There is love, but there is also jealousy, lust and murder. In this new production, originally created for Opera North, director Christopher Alden meets the casual brutality and violence head on. An evocative set, designed by Charles Edwards, locates the action in a run-down church vestry with a confessional which serves first as a hiding place for Angelotti and later as a torture chamber. The result is hugely powerful. Christopher Alden, Director Nicole Youl, Soprano: Floria Tosca Carlo Barricelli, Tenor: Mario Cavaradossi John Wegner, Baritone: Baron Scarpia Warwick Fyfe, Bass: Sacristan Andrea Licata, Conductor Australian Ballet Orchestra | ||

| The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Monday 15-Mar-10 19:30 English National Opera David Alden follows his double Olivier Award-winning production of Janacek's Jenufa with a new staging of the Czech composer's later lyrical masterpiece, Katya Kabanova. A claustrophobically intense yet heart-rending study of sexual morality within a close-knit community, it was inspired by Janacek's erotic obsession with a younger married woman. Stunning singing actress Patricia Racette makes her ENO debut as the passionate soul trapped in a loveless marriage, with Stuart Skelton (a sensational Peter Grimes in another Alden staging in 2009) as the stranger who offers her a brief hope of happiness. Janacek's most lyrically emotional score is conducted by Mark Wigglesworth with an outstanding cast also featuring Susan Bickley, Clive Bayley, John Graham-Hall, Anna Grevelius and Alfie Boe. | Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Monday 15-Mar-10 19:30 In Italian with projected English translations. “La folle journée” (“The Crazy Day”) was the subtitle of Beaumarchais’ comedy on which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart based his opera, one of the greatest creations in the entire repertoire. It centers on a single frantic day in the life of Aguas Frescas, the castle of Count Almaviva. The Count has designs on Susanna, maid of the Countess. Susanna is to be married this very day to the count’s valet, Figaro, which doesn’t stand in the way of the Count’s keeping an assignation with her. But he reckons without Figaro and Susanna who – aided by the Countess – conspire to teach the philandering Count a lesson. Others figuring prominently in the plot are the amorous young page, Cherubino; an older couple, Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina, who turn out to be Figaro’s parents, to his amazement; Susanna’s devious music master, Basilio; and Antonio, the Count’s gardener. | Lincoln Center: Metropolitan Opera House, New York City 10023, United States Monday 15-Mar-10 20:00 Metropolitan Opera Riccardo Muti, a champion of the Verdian tradition, makes his Met debut with one of the composer’s rousing early operas. This story of civilization’s encounter with barbarism is explored in a new production by director Pierre Audi. Some of the brightest lights in contemporary design, including Miuccia Prada and the architecture team of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (the 2008 Beijing Olympics “Bird’s Nest” stadium), have created the costumes and scenery. “Our approach is to stay very close to the descriptions supported by Verdi: destruction, rubble, lagoon, forest, darkness—all in a very naturalistic way,” explain Herzog and de Meuron. Ildar Abdrazakov sings the title role, joined by Violeta Urmana, Ramón Vargas, and Carlos Alvarez. The police chief Scarpia is after Cavaradossi’s capricious sweetheart, the singer Tosca. He brings together her jealousy and tendency to histrionics with his own interests in making her his own, and at the same time clearing his rival Cavaradossi and his political opponent Angelotti out of the way. A diabolical game begins, in which Tosca recognises to late that it is not she who is deceiving Scarpia, but him deceiving her. She betrays Angelotti, who commits suicide. Scarpia promises her a mock execution of Cavaradossi, who helped Angelotti escape. When the time comes for her to pay the price – belonging to him – she kills him. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Tuesday 16-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. We are thus close to many a secret when we hear “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”. Hans Weigel. | The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Tuesday 16-Mar-10 19:30 The Elixir of Love English National Opera The most often performed opera in Italy for two decades after its premiere, Donizetti's The Elixir of Love is still the most popular operatic ‘rom com' of all. Jonathan Miller's staging affectionately relocates the action from 19th century rural Italy to small-town ‘50s America. One of today's highest-flying young lyric tenors, John Tessier made a sensational ENO debut in the 2008 revival of Rossini's The Barber of Seville; he now returns as Nemorino, the lovesick young mechanic who believes that a travelling salesman (played by comic maestro AndrewShore) really can cure his broken heart. With The Elixir of Love running alongside Lucia di Lammermoor, ENO audiences have a rare chance to relish both the comic and tragic sides of Donizetti's operatic genius. Now A Midsummer Night's Dream is back. It all starts with a boy. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 Bliss - World Première Opera Australia "Harry Joy was to die three times, but it was his first death which was to have the greatest effect on him…" Bliss is a novel which defines a generation. No-one forgets the opening line of Peter Carey’s darkly comic fable, which charts the adventures of Harry Joy, an advertising executive who, after having a close encounter with death, finds himself sucked into a Kafkaesque series of events. In 2010 the lights go up on a new opera based on Bliss, commissioned by Opera Australia, directed by Neil Armfield, starring Peter Coleman-Wright and conducted by Elgar Howarth, who has conducted many world premieres of new works. Brett Dean is one of the most exciting composers to have emerged in the world of classical music in recent years. His music is by turns fascinating, atmospheric and disarmingly beautiful. Amanda Holden is an award-winning translator and librettist who has written more than fifty works for the stage. The combination of Brett Dean’s music, Amanda Holden’s words and Peter Carey’s kaleidoscopic imagination is a potent one. Add in the directorial vision of Neil Armfield, the choreography of Kate Champion and the electrifying stage presence of Peter Coleman-Wright, and this new production will be dynamite. | The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 English National Opera David Alden follows his double Olivier Award-winning production of Janacek's Jenufa with a new staging of the Czech composer's later lyrical masterpiece, Katya Kabanova. | Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 In French with projected English translations. La damnation de Faust (premiere Paris, 1846) is Lyric’s first production of any Berlioz work. Classified by the composer as a “dramatic legend,” Damnation has often been heard in concert form, and in that guise has always been hugely successful with major orchestras worldwide. In recent decades some major operatic venues have staged it with enormous success internationally. The familiar dramatic events of the work – the disillusion of Faust and his contemplation of suicide, his encounter with the devil in the person of Méphistophélès, the exuberance of the student Brander, Faust’s initial encounter with the innocent Marguerite and the catastrophic results of their romance – are given incomparable freshness by Berlioz, with episode after episode that enchants the ear: the world-famous “Hungarian March”; the devil’s brilliant solos; Faust’s ravishing invocation to nature; and Marguerite’s heartfelt “King of Thulé” ballad and devastating song of longing for Faust (“D’amour, l’ardente flamme,” one of the supreme achievements of Berlioz’s entire career). There are also immensely challenging roles for chorus members, who play peasants, students, gnomes, sylphs, and heavenly spirits. | Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Thursday 18-Mar-10 14:00 In Italian with projected English translations. | Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Thursday 18-Mar-10 18:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles.

| The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 Bampton Classical Opera Performed in Sanskrit with English surtitles. Running time 3 hrs 15 mins. One of the most visually spectacular opera stagings of recent decades, ENO's London premiere production of Philip Glass's Satyagraha broke all Company box-office records for contemporary opera when it was first seen in 2007. Instilled with breath-taking theatrical flair by Improbable's award-winning director-designer partnership of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, it went on to enjoy equal success at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. A mesmerisingly hypnotic musical meditation upon Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa, and his spiritual progress towards the concept of non-violent protest, Glass's operatic masterpiece now returns to the London Coliseum. Alan Oke repeats his compelling central performance as the young political activist taking the first tentative steps in his lifelong search for truth. Phelim McDermott, Director Alan Oke, Tenor: M.K. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi.
