| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, United Kingdom Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 Lark Ascending Who says British music is all about Pomp and Circumstance? And who says Scandinavian composers only do gloom and doom? Prepare to have a few preconceptions challenged as Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO soar high above the Cotswold countryside in Vaughan Wiliams’ ravishing The Lark Ascending – recently voted Britain’s favourite piece of classical music. The masterly French virtuoso Jean-Yves Thibaudet plays Grieg’s delightful Piano Concerto. Expect wit as well as romance, and play spot-the-folksong in the uproariously brassy Suite that Michael Tippett wrote to celebrate the birth of Prince Charles. | Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham University, Djanogly Recital Hall, Nottingham NG7 2RD, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Eggner Trio On their first visit to Lakeside the Eggner brothers captivated the audience with their musical energy and artistry. This concert programme further explores a wide emotional range. Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op.70 No.1 earned its nickname from the eerie second movement. Shostakovich’s first piano trio written at the age of 17 was dedicated to Tanya Glivenko with whom Shostakovich was in love. There is a romantic intensity to the work but it nonetheless introduces elements of the grotesque which were to become more prominent in his compositional maturity. Ravel’s Piano Trio was completed just as war broke out in 1914. The colouristic work draws inspiration from Malay verse forms and Basque folk music written within a highly complex musical structure. The concert finishes at approximately 9.05pm Christoph Eggner, Piano Georg Eggner, Violin Florian Eggner, Cello | ||

Arguably the finest-ever American melodist, George once admitted “I have more tunes in my head than I could put down on paper in a hundred years.” Ira (nicknamed “The Jeweler” by other songwriters) crafted the witty lyrics that fit perfectly into George’s timeless tunes. It comes together beautifully in this glittery revue combining the DPO with the prodigious talents of pianist Bates and vocalists Saxon and Cannon.
