| Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Au-Rene Theater, Fort Lauderdale, United States Sunday 14-Mar-10 14:00 Program IV Miami City Ballet Dances at a Gathering This was premiered in 1969 with New York City Ballet. It is a work for ten dancers set to piano pieces by Chopin. Robbins began choreographing the ballet as a pas de deux for Edward Villella and Patricia McBride but was so inspired by the music that he continued to expand the piece. He ended with eighteen pieces in all and with five female dancers and five male dancers set apart by the colors of their costumes. Although the ballet has no specific plot, the tone of the piece is uplifting and is tinged with Slavic feeling reminiscent of mazurkas and waltzes. Who Cares? This is set to a Gershwin score and is constructed like a Fabergé egg, with layers of glittering action. Balanchine became acquainted with Gershwin’s music when he was given a set of songs for piano by the composer, who he had worked with on Goldwyn Follies 1938. Sparkling dances for a corps of ten women peel away to reveal five couples, who dance a breezy series of interlocked duets. When they depart, the stage is set for the "stars" of the ballet, three ballerinas and one man. These relationships are defined by a casual flirtatiousness mixed with urban sophistication. The solos and pas de deux each maintain a classic freshness despite their nostalgic sentiment. In the jubilant finale, when the entire cast is assembled and each male acquires three partners, there is a kaleidoscopic sense that mirror images of the central quartet are flooding the stage. | ||

| Belk Theater, 130 N. Tryon St, Charlotte NC 28202, United States Sunday 14-Mar-10 14:00 Opera Carolina Bizet’s dramatic masterpiece, Carmen, combines powerful characterizations with a resoundingly rich, evocative score. Carmen, the beguiling gypsy with a fiery temper, is a cigarette-factory girl who is nonetheless mistress of her life. She loves where, when and whom she wills, but intuitively believes she is powerless over destiny. Don José, an army corporal, begins his fall from decency when he succumbs to Carmen’s seduction. Escamillo, the toreador idol of the masses, is more evenly matched to CarmenÕs wiles. He, unlike Don José, knows that loving Carmen is ultimately dangerous. A classic story of fatal attractions set to unforgettable music. | ||

An American classic, Fancy Free was later developed into the hit musical On The Town. A seminal piece in the history of twentieth century ballet, George Balanchine’s Apollo traces the birth of the god of music, poetry and prophecy -- and his education through (and flirtation with) the three muses Terpsichore, Calliope, and Polyhymnia. Christopher Bruce’s comic and moving Hush chronicles the adventures of a family of performers, and is set to a musical celebration of life – from youth to old age – by Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin. | ||

One of them introduces a friend, Alfredo Germont, who has long admired her from afar. Baron Douphol, Violetta's current protector, takes a dislike to Alfredo and refuses to propose the toast when the wine is poured. But when Violetta faints, Alfredo is the one who helps her and unveils his love to her... Also in this season, you can enjoy this classical love story at the Oper Leipzig!
