| Civic Opera House, Chicago IL60606, United States Thursday 18-Mar-10 14:00 In Italian with projected English translations. “La folle journée” (“The Crazy Day”) was the subtitle of Beaumarchais’ comedy on which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart based his opera, one of the greatest creations in the entire repertoire. It centers on a single frantic day in the life of Aguas Frescas, the castle of Count Almaviva. The Count has designs on Susanna, maid of the Countess. Susanna is to be married this very day to the count’s valet, Figaro, which doesn’t stand in the way of the Count’s keeping an assignation with her. But he reckons without Figaro and Susanna who – aided by the Countess – conspire to teach the philandering Count a lesson. Others figuring prominently in the plot are the amorous young page, Cherubino; an older couple, Dr. Bartolo and Marcellina, who turn out to be Figaro’s parents, to his amazement; Susanna’s devious music master, Basilio; and Antonio, the Count’s gardener. | Oslo Opera House, Main Stage, Oslo, Norway Thursday 18-Mar-10 18:00 Norwegian Opera Sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. Running time about 5 hours. Since he visited the The Norwegian National Opera with Julius Caesar in 2005 and 2007, Stefan Herheim has strengthened his position as one of Europe's most exciting directors. In March he returns with a major new production of Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. This work has been long in the making. Tannhäuser's opening night in Dresden in 1845 was a triumph. However, Richard Wagner was never entirely happy with it and revised the opera several times. Fifteen years after the first performance he radically extended the mount of Venus scene and introduced this with a ballet in a groundbreaking new tonal language. This led to the most infamous scandal in opera history. That was in Paris in March 1860, and exactly 150 years later the National Opera is presenting this version for the first time in Norway. In his possessed quest for his true self, Wagner's antihero, the minnesinger Tannhäuser, is torn between lustful ecstasy and deep devotion – brought to life through Venus, the erotic goddess, and Elisabeth, who represents pure, devotional love. Tannhäuser is brutally wrenched between these extreme opposites. In his despair he sets out on a pilgrim journey to the Pope in Rome to receive absolution. One of the numerous musical highlights in this work is his account of this painful experience. | The London Coliseum, London, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 Bampton Classical Opera Performed in Sanskrit with English surtitles. Running time 3 hrs 15 mins. One of the most visually spectacular opera stagings of recent decades, ENO's London premiere production of Philip Glass's Satyagraha broke all Company box-office records for contemporary opera when it was first seen in 2007. Instilled with breath-taking theatrical flair by Improbable's award-winning director-designer partnership of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, it went on to enjoy equal success at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. A mesmerisingly hypnotic musical meditation upon Mahatma Gandhi's early years in South Africa, and his spiritual progress towards the concept of non-violent protest, Glass's operatic masterpiece now returns to the London Coliseum. Alan Oke repeats his compelling central performance as the young political activist taking the first tentative steps in his lifelong search for truth. Phelim McDermott, Director Alan Oke, Tenor: M.K. | Opernhaus, Opernhaus Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 The Tales of Hoffmann Zurich Opera In my opinion, Jacques Offenbach is the third great musical dramatist after Mozart and Verdi. He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. We are thus close to many a secret when we hear “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”. Hans Weigel. | Dresden Staatskapelle, D 01067 Dresden, Germany Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:00 3 Colours Red Dresden SemperOper Ballet Red, White and Green, colours in a series of «Jewels», each with their own distinct characteristics and charm but all inherently connected, will be continued on the stage of the Semper Opera in this and the next season. Last season we began our journey with «4 Colours Red» - energy, fire, power and passion. Highlighted by George Balanchine’s «Rubies» this programme includes two world premieres: one created by French-Canadian choreographic team François Chirpaz/ Kristen Cere and the other by David Dawson. The programme is opened by Balanchine’s Pas de Deux «Tarantella». Tarantella George Balanchine Probably the best-known of all southern Italian folk dances, Tarantella provided the inspiration for Balanchine when he choreographed this pas de deux in 1964. A gem of neoclassical composition, it lends weight to the popular belief that the bite of a tarantula - from which the word «Tarantella» is allegedly derived - can cause a person to dance around in a crazed manner. An explosive dance carried along by the rhythm of pure passion. Rubies George Balanchine It is said that Balanchine conceived his idea for the first ever full-length abstract ballet after visiting a famous New York jewellery store. The three sections may be different from each other and self-contained, yet the theme of «Jewels» runs through his work and pays homage to the three gemstones in his life: France («Emeralds»), America («Rubies») and Russia («Diamonds»). «Rubies», set to Igor Stravinsky's jazzy Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, embodies the energy and rhythm of this sophisticated, new world. Self Portrait Kristen Cere| François Chirpaz The individual’s unique freedom remains in his feelings, which he has no control over. «Je est un autre», said the poet: «I» is another, the ultimate unexplored territory. Despite this, the individual only accomplishes himself in a multitude where he looses himself, victim of what he really is: his emotions. This new creation for the Dresden SemperOper Ballett intends to investigate individuality’s role within a group, its submission to the complexity of corresponding movements, language, energy and surroundings, while developing throughout this, and making its own external rules to express human intimacy. The World According to Us In his newest piece of choreography specially created for Dresden SemperOper Ballett and his last as Resident House Choreographer, David Dawson invites his audience to accompany him on a journey through a world of creativity that manifests itself everywhere and nowhere. The art that surrounds us presented as an impression by drawing a fine line between what is narrative and what is abstract. Intended to represent itself as a gallery of works for the audience to witness and enjoy. With music by celebrated composers Dawson aims at responding to visual images that relate to our artistic human history by blending the worlds of the real and of fantasy. Art that absorbs, cloaks and reveals all the unspeakable occurrences that surround it. | ||

Moving beyond mere narrative, he reveals the torments and mysteries of a long inner journey riddled with pitfalls, uncertainties and doubts. Preljocaj shares his journey with two artists with strong personalities : Bruno Mantovani, the brilliant, young French composer, whose first work this is for the Paris Opera, and Claude Lévêque, the visual artist and scenographer, with his powerful ability to dream up new spaces for our time. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production. Puccini s great aria, 'Vissi d'arte', is a moment when time stands still. Who could resist such a heartbreaking appeal? And who could resist the glorious voice of Nicole Youl in the title role of Opera Australia's first new production of Puccini's Tosca for nearly thirty years? Although we think of Puccini as the ultimate romantic, Tosca is anything but. There is love, but there is also jealousy, lust and murder. In this new production, originally created for Opera North, director Christopher Alden meets the casual brutality and violence head on. An evocative set, designed by Charles Edwards, locates the action in a run-down church vestry with a confessional which serves first as a hiding place for Angelotti and later as a torture chamber. The result is hugely powerful. Tryon St, Charlotte NC 28202, United States Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Carolina Bizet’s dramatic masterpiece, Carmen, combines powerful characterizations with a resoundingly rich, evocative score. Carmen, the beguiling gypsy with a fiery temper, is a cigarette-factory girl who is nonetheless mistress of her life. She loves where, when and whom she wills, but intuitively believes she is powerless over destiny. Don José, an army corporal, begins his fall from decency when he succumbs to Carmen’s seduction. Escamillo, the toreador idol of the masses, is more evenly matched to CarmenÕs wiles. He, unlike Don José, knows that loving Carmen is ultimately dangerous. A classic story of fatal attractions set to unforgettable music. | ||

| Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham University, Djanogly Recital Hall, Nottingham NG7 2RD, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Eggner Trio On their first visit to Lakeside the Eggner brothers captivated the audience with their musical energy and artistry. This concert programme further explores a wide emotional range. Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op.70 No.1 earned its nickname from the eerie second movement. Shostakovich’s first piano trio written at the age of 17 was dedicated to Tanya Glivenko with whom Shostakovich was in love. There is a romantic intensity to the work but it nonetheless introduces elements of the grotesque which were to become more prominent in his compositional maturity. Ravel’s Piano Trio was completed just as war broke out in 1914. The colouristic work draws inspiration from Malay verse forms and Basque folk music written within a highly complex musical structure. The concert finishes at approximately 9.05pm Christoph Eggner, Piano Georg Eggner, Violin Florian Eggner, Cello | ||

| Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Corinthian Chamber Orchestra The Corinthian Chamber Orchestra performs the core of Bernstein’s last concert, given at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony on August 19, 1990 - Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes. This was not planned as Bernstein’s final concert, but by that point he must have known that it would be - he died two months later of advanced lung disease. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony also has particular significance for the CCO, having recorded it with their late Musical Director, Alan Hazeldine, who at the time was fighting a losing battle with lung cancer. Bernstein generously championed many composers, including Samuel Barber. He didn’t premiere the Violin Concerto, but famously recorded it in 1965 with Isaac Stern and the New York Philharmonic. The CCO are joined by Laura Samuel of the celebrated Belcea Quartet to perform this melodious concerto. Corinthian Chamber Orchestra Peter Stark, Conductor Laura Samuel, Violin | ||

| Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Lark Ascending Who says British music is all about Pomp and Circumstance? And who says Scandinavian composers only do gloom and doom? Prepare to have a few preconceptions challenged as Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO soar high above the Cotswold countryside in Vaughan Wiliams’ ravishing The Lark Ascending – recently voted Britain’s favourite piece of classical music. The masterly French virtuoso Jean-Yves Thibaudet plays Grieg’s delightful Piano Concerto. Expect wit as well as romance, and play spot-the-folksong in the uproariously brassy Suite that Michael Tippett wrote to celebrate the birth of Prince Charles. Elgar’s ever-fresh musical portrait of his Worcestershire friends – well, the piece that gave the world Nimrod hardly needs any introduction. Tune after tune after tune...
