| Chapter House, Cathedral Close, Exeter EX1 1HS, United Kingdom Saturday 20-Mar-10 20:00 'Books have their Destiny' - Concert of choral polyphony from Treviso & Venice Habent sua fata libelli (‘books have their destiny’) wrote the second century Latin grammarian Terentianus Maurus. Literally thousands of choir books compiled and transcribed over the centuries from European monasteries and cathedrals have been lost forever through war and iconoclasm, though the secrets of these lost repertories are sometimes revealed in small fragments of formerly large collections. On 6th April 1944 the archives of Treviso Cathedral held 25 manuscripts of polyphonic music written before 1630. An allied air raid on the 7th destroyed 14 of them. Thanks to the painstaking work of modern scholars such as Bonnie Blackburn, sixteenth century repertory from Treviso Cathedral has been painstakingly reconstructed, allowing a unique glimpse into its rich musical tradition and of the talents of composers such as Giovanni Nasco, Pietro Spalenza, Francesco Santacroce and their more famous colleagues Cipriano de Rore and Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. | Royal Academy of Music, Duke's Hall, London NW1 5HT, United Kingdom Sunday 21-Mar-10 12:00 Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series ‘Selig ist der Mann’ was first heard on St Stephen’s Day (Boxing Day), 1725. The librettist uses the martyrdom of St Stephen to illustrate, metaphorically, the salvation of the Christian believer through death. Bach casts his piece in dialogue form and omits any chorus, preferring a sequence of four arias of which the last, for soprano, is a joyful prayer of thanksgiving. ‘Was Soll ich aus dir machen Ephraim’ was first performed in 1723 and is a sombre work, evoking the often turbulent relationship between the Lord and his chosen people in the Old Testament. A severe alto aria proclaims a merciless judgement on all sinners and only towards the end do the text and music speak of repentance and the redeeming blood of Christ. ‘Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid’ is another dialogue cantata in which the two protagonists are bass (the traditional vox Christi) and soprano (the Soul). The movements which frame the work are chorale fantasias in which the soprano sings the chorale (hymn) melody. The concluding one is exuberant, virtuosic and affirmative. ‘The perfect Sunday lunch for any Bach lover.’ The Times, January 2009 Book for several concerts in the Royal Academy of Music / Kohn Foundation Bach Cantatas series for discounts of up to 30%. See the Royal Academy of Music website for details. Academy Baroque Orchestra Iain Ledingham, Conductor Price type: Low cost: 50% at £10 or less | ||

| More Info... | ||
| Christ and St Stephen's Church, 120 West 69th St, New York City 10023, United States Sunday 21-Mar-10 19:00 David Simpson, Baroque cello David Simpson is principal cellist of the French Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants. The vast majority of works for melody instruments from the Baroque era require a basso continuo accompaniment. Unaccompanied solos were very rare exceptions. Johann Sebastian Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin and his six Suites for solo cello are of course the most famous examples, but other composers both before and after Bach also wrote some very fine unaccompanied music. This program, centered on the First and Fourth Bach Cello Suites, provides an opportunity to hear some wonderful examples of how these composers were able to suggest harmony and counterpoint on a solo melody instrument. The program includes works by Christopher Simpson, Georg Philipp Telemann, Domenico Gabrielli, Carlo Graziani, and several of the beautiful, recently republished Capricci by Giuseppe dall’Abaco. | Church of the Holy Cross, Church Street, Mark TA9 4NF, United Kingdom Saturday 27-Mar-10 19:30 Concert by the Phoenix Singers - Youth and Tradition In ‘Youth and tradition’ the youthful compositions of 19th, 20th and 21st century composers is the focus of a programme of music to be given by The Phoenix Singers, a Taunton based mixed choir, on Saturday, 27th March, (7.30pm) in the Church of the Holy Cross, Mark. The concert is a wonderful opportunity to hear fresh, youthful and easily accessible music written by young minds. All the pieces were written by people between the ages 18 and 20 and who were later to become established composers. In 1842, Peter Cornelius, who was 18 at the time, wrote a number of beautiful choral songs of which The Phoenix Singers will sing two examples. The young American composer, Eric Whitacre, was just 20 years old when he wrote his Three Flower Songs in 1990. Up to that point Whitacre had had very little music training but since has made a huge impact on the world-wide choral scene. The Scottish composer, James MacMillan, was still at school in 1977 when he wrote part of his Missa Brevis for his school choir. Herbert Howells wrote his Mass in the Dorian Mode for Westminster Cathedral choir in 1912 while still 20. These compositions clearly demonstrate young and already accomplished composers acknowledging the traditions and techniques of their forebears while stamping on their music something of their own very individual style. Tickets can be ordered on line by going to the Phoenix Singers web site. Phoenix Singers, Somerset Andrew Maddocks, Conductor John Young, Organ Price type: Low cost: 50% at £10 or less | ||

| Washington Irving High School Auditorium, New York City, United States Saturday 27-Mar-10 20:00 Johannes String Quartet Single tickets only $10 The Johannes Quartet consists of four outstanding musicians who take time away from their busy careers to pursue their love of the string quartet literature. This quartet brings together the Principal cello of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the first American to win the Paganini Violin Competition in 24 years, and a Concert Artist Guild International Competition Winner, and has been praised by listeners and critics alike for its special combination of passion, warmth, elegance and poetry. Each member has spent numerous summers at the celebrated Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, birthplace of many of the world's renowned ensembles. New York appearances include their recent Carnegie Hall debut as well as frequent performances on the Schneider Series at the New School and the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts at Town Hall. Since the Johannes made its acclaimed debut there in 1998, the Chamber Music Society of Philadelphia has played a major role in launching the Quartet, presenting them regularly each season, including a two-concert series of the complete Beethoven opus 18 quartets. Their debut was described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as having "accurate intonation, vigorous interaction and careful regard for the details in the score...the passion and attack that characterize the best of quartet playing." Highlights of the 2008-09 season include two tours with renowned Guarneri Quartet. This collaborative project includes premiere performances of "Octet: Double Quartet" a new work written for the two ensembles by award winning composer William Bolcom, commissioned by the Music Accord consortium of presenters, as well as the glorious Mendelssohn Octet. In addition to this work, the Johannes also premiere a new string quartet, “Homunculus,” written for them by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Current season performances include the Orange County Performing Arts Center(CA), San Francisco Performances, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society(AZ), UCLA Live!(in Los Angeles, CA), Kansas City Friends of Chamber Music(MO), Hayes University in Ft Hayes(KS), and for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall in New York City. This two-year project started in February 2008 with triumphant performances presented by the Krannert Center in Champaign-Urbana(IL), University Musical Society in Ann Arbor(MI), Penn State University, and Celebrity Series of Boston. Also in the 2008-09 season, the group will return to the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society for their annual performance and masterclass, the Islip Arts Council(NY), and will make its debut at Middlebury College in VT with residency activities and a performance of Schubert’s C Major Quintet.
Recent highlights include performances in Chicago, Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa, The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Norfolk(VA), Princeton(NJ), Schenectady(NY), and Storrs(CT) . The Johannes has also been heard around the country through broadcasts on public radio’s Performance Today and St. Paul Sunday broadcasts. | ||
