As in his previous operas, he succeeds in producing an incredible tension, a breathtakingly beautiful structuring of the text (his third collaboration with Da Ponte) and the music. Director Michael Haneke, one of the most incisive and insightful film-makers of our time, presents us with his vision of a work that is as spell-binding, serious, complex and at times light as it is formidably modern, where the experience of infidelity transforms the four characters by laying bare their frailty.
