Instead, he is forced to help his mother at the Golden Anchor tavern – day in, day out. When a guest dies, Jim finds a treasure map in his seaman’s chest – the treasure map of the late pirate Captain Flint. And Jim already finds himself embarking on the most exciting adventure of his life. An expedition to Treasure Island is organised, and Jim is allowed to sail on the Hispaniola together with Captain Smollett, Doctor Livesey, Baroness Trelawney, Lily and Scarlett. On the high seas, however, it transpires that Captain Flint’s former comrades have been hired to crew the ship, including the one-legged ship’s cook, Long John Silver. The pirates are also in search of treasure, and they succeed in snatching one half of the treasure map. Once they arrive on the island, a feverish search for the gold begins, during which the protagonists’ luck changes several times.
Treasure Island, by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, is a classic of the adventure genre and has kept generations of young readers on tenterhooks. The composer Frank Schwemmer and his librettist Michael Frowin – both already successful with their opera for children, Robin Hood – have allowed themselves to be gripped by Stevenson’s thrilling story, and have adapted it for the stage. Handel based his work on the libretto by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. In its first season Siroe was performed on 18 successive evenings, but it was never subsequently revived in Handel’s lifetime. The opera now receives its first performance in Göttingen with a top-rank cast performing under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. In Immo Karaman, the Festival has won a young-generation stage director who has made a strong name for himself internationally for his much-noted productions. Conventional and moderate he was not, in life as in art, and so it is with Hector Berlioz' musical rendition of the Faust myth, which explodes all conventions and genres. Berlioz initially called his DAMNATION OF FAUST an “opera concertante”, then a “dramatised legend”. Ultimately, the work is one thing above all else – a grand spectacle incorporating all conceivable forms. Here we are presented with a score made up of opera, oratorio and symphonic elements, lieder, dances, marches, drinking songs, large-scale chorus pieces, a fugue parody and a quodlibet of superimposed troopers' songs. Musically speaking, a composition from the mid 19th century could hardly be more heterogeneous. And this complexity is also a reflection of the title character himself. The world of Berlioz' Faust has ceased to be describable in a linear, unified fashion. The work gives us episodes from the life and death of a romantic, one who does not deal actively but is rather gripped in the ennui of a Lord Byron. Faust is trapped in this boredom and lethargy; nothing can tear him from it – not the crash of battle nor folklore nor anything that Mephisto can serve up in terms of musical and theatrical brouhaha. Christian Spuck is one of the top choreographers of the younger generation. In recent years he has left his imprint as house choreographer at the Stuttgart Ballet and has been Director of Ballet at the Zurich Opera since 2012. Christian Spuck increasingly straddles the genres of opera and dance. Berlioz' DAMNATION OF FAUST, which he directs and choreographs, marks his Berlin debut. Hoffmann, the prototype of the German romantic period artist: his life is an artwork, his lower depths, his doubts, his grand inspirations – his crises. And all of these are connected with: women. Hoffmann in the opera tells of three types of woman in his tales, the “lifeless doll with a heart of ice”, the “virtuoso”, ill and destined to die, as well as the “shameless courtesan”.
Jacques Offenbach’s opera fantastique, premièred in 1881, is based on the play of the same name by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, who drew from the biographies and works of E.T.A. Hoffmann, Adelbert von Chamisso and Alfred de Musset to create their own artist’s drama. It is not a literature opera – the protagonists from different romantic tales are connected to one another by a fictitious Hoffmann – but rather more of a message to the writer, telling him to make art his matter of the heart, or perhaps even open up his heart with brutal frankness.

One of the world’s most recognised and widely performed operas, it focuses on two central relationships: that of the poet Rodolfo, who falls in love with the pretty but consumptive seamstress Mimì; and the painter Marcello, who has a glamorous and popular on-off mistress, Musetta.
Jonathan Miller’s production for ENO has quickly become a company classic and here receives its second revival since its 2009 premiere. Inspired by Brassaï’s photographs of the Paris Left Bank in the 1930s, Miller modernises the original bohemian setting to evoke the stark poverty of the day, creating a highly effective contemporary resonance, citing the film Withnail and I as an inspiration. Playing Mimì is Kate Valentine, who in recent seasons has played the Countess in Fiona Shaw’s production of The Marriage of Figaro and an ‘excellent’ (The Times) Helena in Christopher Alden’s Olivier Award-nominated A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
