The Holland Festival 2013 opens with a tale of love, intrigue, heartbreak and torment. Based on Heiner Müller’s stage version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, composer Luca Francesconi wrote an opera which had its world premiere in 2011 at Milan’s La Scala Theatre with a spectacular staging by Àlex Ollé.
On a stage that symbolises their emotional prison, Valmont and Merteuil fight their bitter, violent battles, a vocal duel interspersed with orchestral dreams of what could have been, but never will be. After all, the two former lovers not only play a deadly game with the hearts of others, with their cynical machinations they ultimately also condemn their own chances of happiness to failure.Co-production between Teatro alla Scala and Wiener Festwochen with IRCAM Paris.In English with Dutch surtitles. The cobbler Hans Sachs represents, on the one hand, the old guard as a member of the Guild of Mastersingers; on the other hand he is open to modernization and stimulates the knight’s artistic gifts, stoking the conflict between narrow-mindedness and true artistry – a theme certainly not unfamiliar to Wagner himself. Tragic is the right word to describe the friendship between Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche. At first the composer of the Gesamtkunstwerk and the philosopher with the hammer were full of admiration for one another, but later the young Nietzsche became increasingly disappointed by the older Wagner. In two vitriolic essays he rased him to the ground.
As well as this fascinating story of the relationship between the thinker and the artist, the Flemish director Jan Fabre was also inspired by the thirteen groundbreaking opera masterpieces which Wagner wrote. It became a singspiel, partly based on personal experience, about the romance between the bourgeois girl Eva Pogner and the knight Walther von Stolzing, who may only wed his beloved once he has won the annual singing contest. The cobbler Hans Sachs represents, on the one hand, the old guard as a member of the Guild of Mastersingers; on the other hand he is open to modernization and stimulates the knight’s artistic gifts, stoking the conflict between narrow-mindedness and true artistry – a theme certainly not unfamiliar to Wagner himself. This work from 2010 will be staged for the first time, in combination with the brand new Troparion, which Zuidam wrote for alto Helena Rasker, the young violinist Liza Ferschtman and a small instrumental ensemble. The piece is about a woman who sheds her tears on a dead branch, hoping God will breathe new life into it. The god Dionysus appears to him in six different guises, now benignly seductive, now confrontational and combative, accompanying Aschenbach towards death. In Venice the author comes face to face with the personification of beauty: the Polish youth Tadzio, for whom he feels a strong attraction. Here Britten reveals, with uncommon openness, the personal struggles of the social outsider. In the musical accompaniment, Britten uses the orchestra to support the realistic storyline, while exotic gamelan instruments depict Tadzio’s beauty. The youth, incidentally, remains mute throughout, and Aschenbach’s monologues are accompanied by a single piano. The composer’s conclusion is that beauty and perfection inevitably go hand and hand with loss and ruination.
