| Opéra Bastille, Paris, 120 rue de Lyon, 75012 Paris, France Thursday 9-Sep-10 07:30pm Der Fliegende Höllander Halfway through its new Ring cycle, the Paris Opera will resound to the music of a young Wagner still wrapped in the mists of German Romanticism, between Schubert and Weber. Crossing the North Sea from Riga to London on board the Thetis in 1839, amid the howling wind and the crashing waves, Wagner heard the sailors tell the legend of the cursed sea-captain. The story, also told by Heinrich Heine, is recounted by Senta on her first appearance: rounding a dangerous cape during a storm and refusing to give up, the Dutchman defies Satan and is condemned to roam the seas for evermore unless a woman is willing to give up her life for him. In a troubling confusion of legend and real life, the Dutchman suddenly stands before Senta and stretches out his hand to her... The storm raging outside is perhaps less powerful than the one that shakes the heart. Recounting the impossibility of living and of redemption, Der fliegende Holländer is above all, and before Götterdämmerung, an opera about wished-for apocalypse.Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris Choeurs de l'Opéra National de Paris Peter Schneider, Conductor Willy Decker, Director Matti Salminen, Bass: Daland Adrianne Pieczonka, Soprano: Senta Klaus Florian Vogt, Tenor: Erik Bernard Richter, Tenor: The Steersman James Morris, Bass-baritone: Dutchman | ||

| Palais Garnier (Opéra de Paris), 75009 Paris, France Saturday 11-Sep-10 07:30pm One of Rossini's most exquisite scores, penned when the composer was only 21 years old, this is a comic opera of pristine charm and humour, full of twinkling, sparkling music and characters who seem freshly minted. The lovely Isabella embarks for Algiers to seek her beloved Lindoro, taken prisoner by the tyrant Mustafà. But the boat founders and the adventure begins... There are pirates, a harem, eunuchs, a palace by the sea, the whole wonderful panoply of oriental exotica still fashionable in the early 19th century. There is also the brilliant and virtuoso bel canto of which Rossini had the secret. And above all there is that zaniness he so cleverly injects into his theatre, as the machine he himself has made suddenly goes haywire, like the extravagant first act finale where the ensemble degenerates into a hubbub of onomatopoeia. Vivica Genaux leads the dance in Andrei Serban's joyous production. | Opéra Bastille, Paris, 120 rue de Lyon, 75012 Paris, France Friday 17-Sep-10 07:30pm In this unchanging Russia, people drink tea and watch the seasons go by. The only sorrows of existence are those brought to the surface by books, poetry and music. In this imperturbable flow of things, this comfortable ennui, Tatiana's letter suddenly opens up the fissures of the heart to reveal with implacable lucidity the violence of desire. Three characters made to love each other tear each other apart and, literally, kill each other. The tragic is no longer what it was: love is impossible, though not because of some outside fate, be it willed by a god or by society. It is not stymied by anything external: hearts are incapable of their own happiness and work ceaselessly for their own ruin. Onegin kills his friend Lenski in a duel. Tatiana, in love but married to another, rebuffs the same Onegin to whom she had once so passionately offered herself: an ordinary tragedy, but not in the least blunted by its ordinariness. Thus Tchaikovsky subsumes Pushkin into his dreamscape and invents a new operatic language of lyrical and exacerbated sensibility. Alongside Olga Guryakova, Ludovic Tézier embodies this mythical operatic figure for the first time at the Paris Opera.Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris Choeurs de l'Opéra National de Paris Vasily Petrenko, Conductor Willy Decker, Director Nadine Denize, Soprano: Madame Larina Olga Guryakova, Soprano: Tatyana Alisa Kolosova, Contralto: Olga Nona Javakhidze, Mezzo-soprano: Philippyevna Ludovic Tézier, Baritone: Eugene Onegin Joseph Kaiser, Tenor: Lensky Gleb Nikolski, Bass: Prince Gremin Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, Tenor: Monsieur Triquet Ugo Rabec, Bass: Zaretsky | ||

| Palais Garnier (Opéra de Paris), 75009 Paris, France Monday 27-Sep-10 07:30pm One of Rossini's most exquisite scores, penned when the composer was only 21 years old, this is a comic opera of pristine charm and humour, full of twinkling, sparkling music and characters who seem freshly minted. | Opéra Bastille, Paris, 120 rue de Lyon, 75012 Paris, France Wednesday 29-Sep-10 07:30pm In this unchanging Russia, people drink tea and watch the seasons go by.

| Opéra Bastille, Paris, 120 rue de Lyon, 75012 Paris, France Monday 4-Oct-10 07:00pm Il Trittico This Triptych is perhaps the only work in the operatic canon to resemble the novella in the literary sphere. Nothing seems to unite these three utterly different moments other than their very dissimilarity and Puccini's determination to ensure the clash of contrasts: a drama of banal jealousy unrelieved by any transcendence, a mystical and supernatural tragedy, a macabre and brilliant opera buffa. What can the banks of the Seine in early 20th century Paris have in common with an 18th century convent and mediaeval Florence? A memory of Dante, perhaps... the hell that is ever beneath our feet and human nature that is the same always and everywhere. Puccini's beloved intimism is shattered, showering its reflections on all sides: here, in three shards, is the great theatre of the world. Musical director Philippe Jordan conducts this rare monument to Puccini's genius in Luca Ronconi's staging.Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Paris Choeurs de l'Opéra National de Paris Choeur d'enfants de l'Opéra National de Paris Philippe Jordan, Conductor Luca Ronconi, Director Juan Pons, Baritone: Michele Marco Berti, Tenor: Luigi Eric Huchet, Tenor: Tinca Mario Luperi, Bass: Talpa Oksana Dyka, Soprano: Giorgetta Marta Moretto, Mezzo-soprano: La Frugola Tamar Iveri, Soprano: Suor Angelica Luciana D'Intino, Contralto: Aunt Princess Barbara Morihien, Mezzo-soprano: The Abbess Marie-Noëlle Vidal, Soprano: A Lay Sister Amel Brahim-Djelloul, Soprano: Suor Genovieffa Claudia Galli, Soprano: Suor Osmina Cornelia Oncioiu, Mezzo-soprano: The nursing sister Juan Pons, Baritone: Gianni Schicchi Ekaterina Siurina, Soprano: Lauretta Marta Moretto, Contralto: Zita Juan Francisco Gatell, Tenor: Rinuccio Eric Huchet, Tenor: Gherardo Barbara Morihien, Soprano: Nella Alain Vernhes, Bass: Simone Roberto Accurso, Baritone: Marco Marie-Thérèse Keller, Mezzo-soprano: La Ciesca Yuri Kissin, Bass: Maestro Spinelloccio Christian Helmer, Baritone: Amantio di Nicolao Ugo Rabec, Bass: Pinellino Alexandre Duhamel, Bass: Guccio | ||

| Opéra Bastille, Paris, 120 rue de Lyon, 75012 Paris, France Wednesday 6-Oct-10 07:30pm Der Fliegende Höllander Halfway through its new Ring cycle, the Paris Opera will resound to the music of a young Wagner still wrapped in the mists of German Romanticism, between Schubert and Weber.
