| The Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Wednesday 14-Apr-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production. Puccini s great aria, 'Vissi d'arte', is a moment when time stands still. Who could resist such a heartbreaking appeal? And who could resist the glorious voice of Nicole Youl in the title role of Opera Australia's first new production of Puccini's Tosca for nearly thirty years? Although we think of Puccini as the ultimate romantic, Tosca is anything but. There is love, but there is also jealousy, lust and murder. In this new production, originally created for Opera North, director Christopher Alden meets the casual brutality and violence head on. An evocative set, designed by Charles Edwards, locates the action in a run-down church vestry with a confessional which serves first as a hiding place for Angelotti and later as a torture chamber. The result is hugely powerful. Shao Chia Lü, Conductor Christopher Alden, Director Orchestra Victoria Opera Australia Chorus Nicole Youl, Soprano: Floria Tosca Rosario la Spina, Tenor: Mario Cavaradossi John Wegner, Baritone: Baron Scarpia Warwick Fyfe, Bass: Sacristan | ||

| The Arts Centre, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Tuesday 20-Apr-10 19:30 Bliss - World Première Opera Australia "Harry Joy was to die three times, but it was his first death which was to have the greatest effect on him…" Bliss is a novel which defines a generation. No-one forgets the opening line of Peter Carey’s darkly comic fable, which charts the adventures of Harry Joy, an advertising executive who, after having a close encounter with death, finds himself sucked into a Kafkaesque series of events. In 2010 the lights go up on a new opera based on Bliss, commissioned by Opera Australia, directed by Neil Armfield, starring Peter Coleman-Wright and conducted by Elgar Howarth, who has conducted many world premieres of new works. Brett Dean is one of the most exciting composers to have emerged in the world of classical music in recent years. His music is by turns fascinating, atmospheric and disarmingly beautiful. Amanda Holden is an award-winning translator and librettist who has written more than fifty works for the stage. The combination of Brett Dean’s music, Amanda Holden’s words and Peter Carey’s kaleidoscopic imagination is a potent one. Add in the directorial vision of Neil Armfield, the choreography of Kate Champion and the electrifying stage presence of Peter Coleman-Wright, and this new production will be dynamite. Inspired by Shakespeare's poetry and Benjamin Britten's music, visionary director Baz Luhrmann dreamt up a colour-drenched realm of midsummer magic where Indian gods, British colonials and rustic clowns collided, colluded and sometimes fell in love. Now A Midsummer Night's Dream is back. It all starts with a boy. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. Meanwhile, a merry band of mortals, including four lovers and some rough and ready thespians, have wandered into the fairies realm. As the night plays out Oberon ends up catching more than he expects. Everyone knows everyone inside the gated compound, and everyone is watching. There is plenty to see. Count Almaviva is in lust with Susanna, the Countess is in tears and Cherubino's hormones are getting him into trouble again. It is up to Figaro to pick his way through a mad day and, hopefully, end up married. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro has appeared in many guises since this Company first presented it. Directors from John Copley to Tim Albery to Neil Armfield have all offered unique interpretations of this multifaceted work, and it is in the spirit of this bold tradition that Opera Australia presents a new Figaro from one of the most exciting directors working in Australia today.
