| The Arts Centre, Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Wednesday 17-Nov-10 07:30pm New Production Figaro is a security guard and his fiancée Susanna is a maid in the Almaviva family's lavish mansion. Everyone knows everyone inside the gated compound, and everyone is watching. There is plenty to see. Count Almaviva is in lust with Susanna, the Countess is in tears and Cherubino's hormones are getting him into trouble again. It is up to Figaro to pick his way through a mad day and, hopefully, end up married. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro has appeared in many guises since this Company first presented it. Directors from John Copley to Tim Albery to Neil Armfield have all offered unique interpretations of this multifaceted work, and it is in the spirit of this bold tradition that Opera Australia presents a new Figaro from one of the most exciting directors working in Australia today. | The Arts Centre, Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Saturday 4-Dec-10 07:30pm It has to be one of Opera Australia's most celebrated productions. Inspired by Shakespeare's poetry and Benjamin Britten's music, visionary director Baz Luhrmann dreamt up a colour-drenched realm of midsummer magic where Indian gods, British colonials and rustic clowns collided, colluded and sometimes fell in love. Now A Midsummer Night's Dream is back. It all starts with a boy. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. Meanwhile, a merry band of mortals, including four lovers and some rough and ready thespians, have wandered into the fairies realm. As the night plays out Oberon ends up catching more than he expects. | The Arts Centre, Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Tuesday 12-Apr-11 07:30pm Opera Australia presents a new production of Puccini’s La bohème, from director Gale Edwards, designers Brian Thomson and Julie Lynch starring two of the most exciting young singers in opera today, Takesha Meshé Kizart as Mimì and Ji-Min Park as Rodolfo. Puccini’s glorious verismo classic has been transported to the glittering Spiegeltent of 1930s Berlin. The fairy lights are twinkling and the music is playing, but in reality the bohemians are still hungry and cold. When Rodolfo meets Mimì the hardship melts in a blaze of passion, and when Musetta sings she is the most beautiful woman in the world. But the world is changing, and love won’t pay the rent. La bohème is a young person’s opera, it’s about falling in love, it’s about losing the love of your life. This new production is the perfect opportunity to showcase some of the finest young singers in Australia and beyond: Takesha Meshé Kizart shares the role of Mimì with our own Antoinette Halloran, while Korean-born Ji-Min Park, who has just sung the role at Covent Garden, shares Rodolfo with Australian tenor David Corcoran. Taryn Fiebig is the show-stopping Musetta, and David Thelander, Shane Lowrencev and David Parkin make up the rest of the gang. Conductor Christian Badea completes the picture, conducting Puccini’s captivating score for this handsome and heart-rending new production. Performed in Italian with English surtitles. Running time: Approximately two hours and ten minutes including one twenty-minute interval. Christian Badea, Conductor Gale Edwards, Director Takesha Meshe Kizart, Soprano: Mimì Ji-Min Park, Tenor: Rodolfo Taryn Fiebig, Soprano: Musetta David Thelander, Baritone: Marcello Opera Australia Chorus Orchestra Victoria | ||

| The Arts Centre, Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Wednesday 20-Apr-11 07:30pm Macbeth is a rough brew of the psychological, political and supernatural When three witches accost Macbeth and predict great things for the loyal soldier he is shocked but elated. However, his wife cannot resist making a murderous plan to hasten fate along. As one murder becomes many the once powerful couple become a pawn of ambition, fatally embroiled in their own plot. Bringing this dark tale of death to life is Canadian René Richard Cyr, who makes his directorial debut with Opera Australia with this striking production. A monumental set is transformed by living scenery and a grand chorus, who deliver some of the most powerful moments of the night. Verdi’s music is by turns exhilarating and terrifying, with spine-tingling choruses giving way to intimate arias. Two remarkable singers take on the notoriously difficult roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Michael Lewis and Elizabeth Connell have proved themselves in many Verdi roles, and so it is with great excitement that we look forward to hearing them in this new production. They will be content to gaze from afar at her divine presence. It is the defining moment of Bizet’s The Pearlfishers and one of the most eloquent and moving duets in the entire operatic repertoire. But even as the two men’s voices ring out in triumphant unanimity, one cannot help but feel the shadow of impending disaster. Will death divide them? Or will it be a woman? Ann-Margret Pettersson’s captivating production plays up to colonial fantasies about Ancient Ceylon, painting the land of the pearlfishers in gold thread and layers of gauze. Meanwhile Bizet’s music, written ten years before Carmen, is full of the promise of great things to come, an exotic musical tapestry informed by curiosity and wild imagination. This is music for dance, for dreaming and, above all, for singing. Ollivier-Philippe Cunéo conducts Bizet’s treasure-trove score, with Luke Gabbedy as Zurga, Henry Choo as Nadir, and Jud Arthur as the menacing head priest Nourabad. And what of Léïla? What voice could possibly break a bond so strong? Would you be able to resist the phenomenal Emma Matthews’s sublime singing? Performed in French with English surtitles. Running time : two hours and thirty minutes including two twenty minute intervals. | ||

They are joined by Jud Arthur as Banquo and Rosario La Spina as Macduff, with young Australian Verdi expert Simon Hewett conducting. Performed in Italian with English surtitles. Running time: Approximately two hours and thirty five minutes including one twenty-minute interval. A co-production with Opéra de Montréal. Simon Hewett, Conductor René Richard Cyr, Director Opera Australia Chorus Michael Lewis, Baritone: Macbeth Elizabeth Connell, Soprano: Lady Macbeth Rosario la Spina, Tenor: Macduff Jud Arthur, Bass: Banquo Stephen Smith, Tenor: Malcolm Orchestra Victoria

| The Arts Centre, Melbourne, Hamer Hall, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne Melbourne Vic 3004, Australia Wednesday 11-May-11 07:30pm Opera Australia presents a new production of Puccini’s La bohème, from director Gale Edwards, designers Brian Thomson and Julie Lynch starring two of the most exciting young singers in opera today, Takesha Meshé Kizart as Mimì and Ji-Min Park as Rodolfo. Christian Badea, Conductor Gale Edwards, Director Antoinette Halloran, Soprano: Mimì David Corcoran, Tenor: Rodolfo Taryn Fiebig, Soprano: Musetta David Thelander, Baritone: Marcello Opera Australia Chorus Orchestra Victoria | ||
