He led humorous musical theatre into its true paradise. Just as the tragedian Verdi took his leave of the world with a humorous piece, this equal master of the humorous bade farewell to the world with a serious opera. However consummate we may find “Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, we must be aware that work on the score was not completed, and that Offenbach certainly had a great deal in mind that he was unable to realise. That is why Tamino and Papageno set off for the kingdom of Sarastro, where Pamina is held captive. There, however, Sarastro, the adversary of the starry queen, proves to be a ruler who preaches reason and has noble aims. He imposes difficult trials on the young people, which take Tamino and Pamina to their limits, while Papageno remains attached to earthly pleasures. Fortunately, three wise boys and the music of the magic flute and the glockenspiel, which makes “even wild animals feel joy”, are there to help in case of emergency. Conductor Fedoseyev, who as a Tchaikovsky connoisseur devotes all his attention to the score’s quiet sounds, elastic tempi and lyrical colours, is a stroke of luck for the Zurich production. He does not lead the Opera Orchestra and his ensemble through the evening as a precise “technician”, but with a subtle feeling for the temperatures of the music, and thus transports much of Tchaikovsky’s artistic vision into the present, beyond mere enjoyment.
