| Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Wednesday 17-Mar-10 19:30 Bliss - World Première Opera Australia "Harry Joy was to die three times, but it was his first death which was to have the greatest effect on him…" Bliss is a novel which defines a generation. No-one forgets the opening line of Peter Carey’s darkly comic fable, which charts the adventures of Harry Joy, an advertising executive who, after having a close encounter with death, finds himself sucked into a Kafkaesque series of events. In 2010 the lights go up on a new opera based on Bliss, commissioned by Opera Australia, directed by Neil Armfield, starring Peter Coleman-Wright and conducted by Elgar Howarth, who has conducted many world premieres of new works. Brett Dean is one of the most exciting composers to have emerged in the world of classical music in recent years. His music is by turns fascinating, atmospheric and disarmingly beautiful. Amanda Holden is an award-winning translator and librettist who has written more than fifty works for the stage. The combination of Brett Dean’s music, Amanda Holden’s words and Peter Carey’s kaleidoscopic imagination is a potent one. Add in the directorial vision of Neil Armfield, the choreography of Kate Champion and the electrifying stage presence of Peter Coleman-Wright, and this new production will be dynamite. Peter Coleman-Wright, Baritone: Harry Joy Lorina Gore, Soprano: Honey B Barry Ryan, Baritone: Alex David Corcoran, Tenor: David Taryn Fiebig, Soprano: Lucy Kanen Breen, Tenor: Johnny Milijana Nikolic, Mezzo-soprano: Mrs Dalton Henry Choo, Tenor: Aldo / Nigel Clunes Elgar Howarth, Conductor Neil Armfield, Director Opera Australia Chorus Australian Ballet Orchestra | ||

| Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production. Puccini s great aria, 'Vissi d'arte', is a moment when time stands still. Who could resist such a heartbreaking appeal? And who could resist the glorious voice of Nicole Youl in the title role of Opera Australia's first new production of Puccini's Tosca for nearly thirty years? Although we think of Puccini as the ultimate romantic, Tosca is anything but. There is love, but there is also jealousy, lust and murder. In this new production, originally created for Opera North, director Christopher Alden meets the casual brutality and violence head on. An evocative set, designed by Charles Edwards, locates the action in a run-down church vestry with a confessional which serves first as a hiding place for Angelotti and later as a torture chamber. The result is hugely powerful. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Friday 19-Mar-10 19:30 Opera Australia It has to be one of Opera Australia's most celebrated productions. Tytania, Queen of the Fairies, is besotted with a young Indian Prince. With the help of mischievous Puck, King Oberon plans his humiliating revenge, conjuring up a web of enchantment. The inimitable Anthony Warlow dons his cutlass for another voyage as The Pirates of Penzance sails back into town. Gilbert and Sullivan's fifth collaboration has long been high on the list of all-time favourites, but no one could have predicted the runaway success of this production, directed by Stuart Maunder and designed by Roger Kirk. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Friday 3-Sep-10 19:30 The Pirates of Penzance Opera Australia Some pirates sail the Caribbean. Some search for buried treasure. Some do all kinds of terrible deeds, but not these ones. Prepare to meet the soppiest, silliest set of pirates that ever were, led by a Pirate King who loves to sing. A foot-stomping, wisecracking, feel-good show, it has played to packed houses around the country and beyond and now returns, complete with its crazy cartoons, swashbuckling heroes and dainty heroines, to the place it all began. | Sydney Opera House: Opera Theatre, Sydney 1225, Australia Tuesday 14-Sep-10 19:30 Opera Australia New Production Figaro is a security guard and his fiancée Susanna is a maid in the Almaviva family's lavish mansion. Everyone knows everyone inside the gated compound, and everyone is watching. There is plenty to see. Count Almaviva is in lust with Susanna, the Countess is in tears and Cherubino's hormones are getting him into trouble again. It is up to Figaro to pick his way through a mad day and, hopefully, end up married. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro has appeared in many guises since this Company first presented it. Directors from John Copley to Tim Albery to Neil Armfield have all offered unique interpretations of this multifaceted work, and it is in the spirit of this bold tradition that Opera Australia presents a new Figaro from one of the most exciting directors working in Australia today.
