| Estonian National Opera House, Tallinn, Estonia Wednesday 2-Dec-09 19:00 Verdi's opera "Un Ballo in Maschera" will be premiered in a new production at the Estonian National Opera. The opera with the libretto by Antonio Somma is about passion, love, political intrigues, people stuck in the labyrinth of life and everything that an opera is usually about. The music by Verdi conveys it in such an authentic, human and timeless way that it makes it hard to believe that 150 years have passed since the world premiere of the opera. The complicated person of Gustavus III of Sweden (1796-1792) and his assassination at a masked ball on March 16, 1792, has provided material for various interpretations and heated disputes. In the 19th century Italy, characterised by the spirit of reunification, the cultural life was shaped by censors who came up with topical political pretexts for banning the opera. Nevertheless, it is love and deep feelings, superior to politics, that make the opera by Verdi memorable. | Church of S. Paolo entro le Mura, Rome, Italy Wednesday 30-Dec-09 20:30 Virtuosi d'opera di Roma: La Traviata Enjoy La Traviata opera in 3 acts, libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, after the novel and play 'La Dame aux Camelias' by Alexandre Dumas son, first performed 6th March 1853 at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice. After the highly successful premiere of Rigoletto at La Fenice in March 1851, Verdi was commissioned to deliver an opera for that house, to be performed in March 1853. He spent some time in Paris during the winter of 1851/52 and there he saw a daring new play by Alexandre Dumas: 'La Dame aux Camelias'. However, Verdi did not decide on this subject right away. The theatre forced Verdi to abandon the contemporary setting and relocate the action back to the year 1700. This rankled Verdi enormously, but he accepted, relieved that the libretto had passed the censor quite quickly and with less trouble than he was used to encounter in Venice. It would almost seem that the hallmark of some of the most successful and well-loved operas is a less than favorable - even disastrous - reception of the premiere. This was the case for 'La Traviata' when it was first performed at La Fenice. It was an unmitigated fiasco. But: Exactly 14 months later on 6th May 1854, again in Venice, at the Teatro San Benedetto it was an overwhelming success. | ||

The young lovers eventually meet again, but by then Violetta is dying. In La traviata, Verdi serves up a richness of melodic flow and elegant orchestration that compellingly conveys both the buoyancy of Parisian society and the pain of separation. Violetta’s death scene is one of the most touching in the entire history of opera. “...beautiful in its radiant elegance...” - Helsingin Sanomat, H-I.L. Performed in Italian, with surtitles in Finnish and English. Duration ca 2 h 40 min, 1 intermission.
