| Charlton House, London, Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Recital - Soprano and Piano Soprano Cheryl Coutinho was born in Poole, England and is of Goan/Portuguese extraction. She recently finished studying for her master’s degree in vocal performance at Trinity College of Music where she was awarded a Gladys Bratton and TCM Trust Scholarship. Cheryl studies voice with Paula Anglin.
Ms. Coutinho performed as Kay Amin, the wife of president Amin in scenes of a new opera, The Last King of Scotland by Stephen McNeff. This was performed at the Royal Opera House, Linbury Studio Theatre, Covent Garden in February 2012.
Cheryl has also toured in Switzerland where she performed a new work by composer Duncan Ward for soprano and brass in concert with the Meridian Brass Ensemble. This particular collaboration has also taken place at the Royal Festival Hall South Bank and at the PAW Festival in Swanage. Other concert performances include El Amor Brujo with conductor Jonathan Tilbrook and the Nottingham Orchestra; A Night of Spanish Song with the Iberian Quintet at the Peacock Theatre; and as a soloist in Mahler’s 2nd Symphony.
Very much at home in the operatic repertoire, Cheryl’s dramatic performances include Mimì (La bohème), First Lady (The Magic Flute), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), Casilda (The Gondoliers), the Countess (The Marriage of Figaro) and Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw – Trinity Opera Scenes).
Last year, Cheryl was a semi-finalist in the Trinity College of Music Soloist Competition and this year was a finalist in Trinity’s French Song Competition. Other competitions she has taken part in include Bournemouth Music Festival Competition, New Milton Music Festival Competition and Bournemouth Evening Echo National Competition.
Ms. Coutinho has sung in many master classes with artists such as Simon Keenlyside, Rosalind Plowright, Jonathan Peter Kenny, and Rita Susovsky. She is also a member of the Trinity College of Music Mentor Scheme at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House and has had the opportunity to shadow many rehearsals and music calls with Willard White, Roberto Alagna and Nina Stemme, among others.
Ffinian Jones began learning the piano at the age of eight and his natural ability soon became evident. He was invited to study performance, composition and history at the Staffordshire Musical Society for talented musicians, and by the age of 15 had already been awarded ABRSM Grade 8 distinction in the piano, cello and alto saxophone. He went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. A year later Ffinian was successful in gaining a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied piano with Murray McLachlan. After his sixth form studies at Chetham’s, he entered Trinity College of Music in London as an undergraduate to study with Philip Fowke, and from September 2009 to January 2010 studied at the Conservatoire National et Superior de Music et Dance de Lyon, France, with Florrent Boffard as part of the Erasmus scheme.
Throughout his career he has participated in many master-classes given by distinguished musicians including Leslie Howard, Anton Kuerti, Phillipe Cassard, Noriko Ogawa, Alexander Ardakov, Mikhail Kazakevich, Deniz Gelenbe, and Douglas Finch. He was also invited to play Ronald Stevenson’s Peter Grimes Fantasy to the composer, who was himself a personal friend of Benjamin Britten.
Ffinian is a keen chamber musician and has formed a long standing duo with Soprano Cheryl Coutinho. The duo focuses mainly on the French and German repertoire and give regular concerts across the UK.
Ffinian's many competition successes include being finalist in the 2008 Il Circolo Competition, winner of the 2010 Trinity College John Ireland Competition, and soloist in Messiaen’s La Ville d’en Haut, held at Blackheath Halls, 2008. Recent appearances have included a performance of Graham Fitkin’s Sciosophy at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, a solo recital at St. Martin in the Fields, and a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.11, K413 with the Gibbs quartet in Greenwich, London. He was also invited to contribute to a discussion on Liszt in a live interview on BBC Radio 3. He is currently working as a freelance pianist Liszt, Franz (1811-1886), Années de Pèlerinage, Troisième Année: Les jeux d'eaux à la villa d'Este, S 163 no. 4 Price type: Free | ||
