| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 27-Sep-08 Berliner Philharmoniker - Sir Simon Rattle Most admirers of Maurice Ravel’s music probably haven’t heard that the elegant composer loved to steal away from parties or official events. But not for a quiet cigarette outside – his destination was the children’s playroom. Ravel was often found there, immersed in some game with the boys and girls, which he found much more enjoyable than courteous small talk. Although this is only a side note in the life of the extraordinary composer, it is extremely valuable when listening to his children’s opera L’Enfant et les sortilèges. Knowing how roguish Ravel sometimes was enables us to properly grasp the playful character of the piece and its imaginatively rhetorical exuberance. Considering all this, Simon Rattle is obviously the ideal conductor to perform the work. Next to this opus, Ravel’s ballet music for Ma Mère l’Oye sounds just as magical as the opera. | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 4-Oct-08 Berliner Philharmoniker - Semyon Bychkov His perspective is scenic. And if one is on the lookout for a contemporary composer who sensitively draws the external world into the depth of his works, one will soon come across Detlev Glanert. Just a few months ago, the former Henze student celebrated the successful world premiere of his opera Nijinskys Tagebuch in Aachen. And now the Berliner Philharmoniker venture to perform an opus by Glanert. The piece is called Theatrum bestiarum and is an orchestral work – captivating in its tonal plethora. In the concerts, of which Theatrum bestiarum is a part, we are honoured by an old friend on the rostrum of the Philharmoniker: Semyon Bychkov. He juxtaposes Glanert’s bestiary with a natural spectacle of a quite megalomaniac scope. After the break, Bychkov and his orchestra interpret Richard Strauss’ Alpensinfonie: another work that unfolds scenic dimensions. | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Friday 10-Oct-08 Berliner Philharmoniker Connoisseurs have been in the know for a while: when Trevor Pinnock steps up to the rostrum he is at best holding scores that are about 250 years old, music from Viennese Classicism. Pinnock justifiably made a name for himself as an expert for music from this time. His interpretations, especially of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music are fine, dense, structured and sharp. And this is why Mozart fans can look forward to Pinnock’s guest conductorship with the Berliner Philharmoniker, and of course to the works themselves: both of the master’s G Minor symphonies. This utterly delightful combination provides enlightening comparisons between Mozart’s late and early styles. In their midst lies a work, which is not only one of the most beautiful of its kind, but also known for controversy about its name: with the question whether the piano concerto K.271 is really called Jeunehomme or rather Jenamy. Our recommendation is that you choose the name you prefer and enjoy the interpretation of the Berliner Philharmoniker under Trevor Pinnock with the soloist Maria João Pires. Connoisseurs know: she is one of the best contemporary performers of Mozart... | ||

Philharmonie: Großer Saal, BerlinBeethoven - Berio - Lieberson |
|
![]() | ||
| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 18-Oct-08 Beethoven - Berio - Lieberson In a letter to the concert agent Johann Peter Salomon, Ludwig van Beethoven described his Seventh Symphony as “one of my best”. The work, premiered in the months after Napoleon’s defeat in the Battle of Leipzig, was later considered to be the counterpart to the Eroica, as well as symphonic variation on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister and referred to as an “apotheosis of the dance” (Richard Wagner). The breadth of possible modes of interpretation speaks for itself: with its sometimes heroic, sometimes light-hearted, transitionally pensive, and once again entrancingly optimistic score, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony reads and sounds almost like a compendium of its composer’s inexhaustible means of expression. The concert is opened with Luciano Berio’s ingenious arrangement of 18th century music, followed by Peter Lieberson’s autobiographically inspired musical setting of love poems by the Chilean author Pablo Neruda. | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 25-Oct-08 Elgar - Bartók / Shaham - Zinman In the past, Great Britain has often been referred to as a “land without music”, underlining the widespread continental opinion that the British Isles had not brought forth any composers of international rank. Obviously a mistake, especially since a whole line of internationally renowned composers emerged from England in the first decades of the last century. Among them Edward Elgar, who was born in 1857. Richard Strauss is said to have called him the “front man” of English music, and back home he has long been known as the “grand old man”. In an utterly compelling manner, Elgar’s Violin Concerto from 1910 reveals how subtly he was able to combine modernist tendencies with late Romantic influences. No one has ever doubted the rich traditions of Hungarian music, which prepared the ground for the timelessly clear music of Béla Bartók, who was born in 1881. Bartók’s Concert for Orchestra, first performed in 1944, is a sparkling treasure chest of musical ideas – and, like Elgars Violin Concerto, a must-see for any fan of classical music! | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 1-Nov-08 Haydn 92 - Brahms 1 / Rattle “Since Haydn, a symphony is no longer a simple affair, but a matter of life and death”, Johannes Brahms once noted. But even more awe-inspiring than Haydn’s over one hundred symphonies was Ludwig van Beethoven’s musical legacy. Born in Hamburg in 1833, Brahms heard the “giant marching behind him” and, accordingly, as a young man had his difficulties composing symphonies... Brahms abandoned one plan to contribute to the genre in 1854. In the following twenty years he proved himself with various other kinds of orchestral works. It was only in 1876 – Brahms was already 43 years old! – that he finally found the courage to present his first symphony to the public. And he was greeted with overwhelming success! None other than the conductor Hans von Bülow called Brahms’ symphonic debut “Beethoven’s Tenth”. The combination of Haydn’s Symphony No. 92, which he presented on the occasion of receiving an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1791, and Brahms groundbreaking First Symphony, is a concert experience that shouldn’t be missed! | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 8-Nov-08 Brahms PC1 and sym 2/ Vogt - Rattle Johannes Brahms’ path to the symphony was arduous and took a circuitous route. Unsatisfied with his work on a symphony, he discarded it, instead incorporating material from it into his First Piano Concert which premiered in Hanover in 1859. Two years later the composer titled his orchestral work composed of a number of movements Serenade op. 11, out of fear of comparison with one of the greatest symphonists of all time. “Oh God, if one dares to write symphonies after Beethoven, they must be absolutely different!”, Brahms exclaimed. It was only with the overwhelming success of his First Symphony, premiered in November 1876, that Brahms overcame his “symphony scruples” – as Robert Schumann once called them. Just six months later he began working on his Second Symphony. And it came easy to him: after having spent no less than twelve years brooding over his contemplative First Sym-phony, Brahms composed his distinctly cheerful Second within months. Brahms explained the predominantly pastoral character of the Second Symphony with reference to the idyllic at-mosphere he encountered working at the Wörthersee: “so many melodies flying around here that you must be careful not to tread on any...” | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Friday 14-Nov-08 Brahms 3 amd 4/ Rattle “Aimez-vous Brahms?”, the French author Françoise Sagan asked her readers in 1959. Two years later, France and the rest of the world were suddenly hit by a true Brahms fever when the novel was made into a film titled “Goodbye Again”, with Ingrid Bergmann, Yves Montand and Anthony Perkins. Director Anatole Litvak chose a melody from the third movement of Johannes Brahms’ Third Symphony from 1883 as the theme for his cinematic masterpiece. Et voilà: all clichés of Brahms’ music being “chaste” or “academic” vanished into thin air. The broad audience’s attention was drawn to the composer’s extensive work, at the same time opening the world of classical music to people, who had never before set foot inside a concert hall. However, this concert will not only delight classical music novices. The interpretation that the Berliner Philharmoniker and their principle conductor Sir Simon Rattle present of Brahms’ fourth and last symphony – enthusiastically celebrated by the public and press – allows us to relive how Brahms completed his symphonic oeuvre with a brilliant final stroke. | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Saturday 13-Dec-08 Bruckner 8 - Thielemann There is hardly another 19th century composer who was a more devout Catholic than Anton Bruckner. His faith provided the deep, infinite foundation for his artistic work – not just for his last symphony, which he explicitly devoted “to God the Beloved”, but also and especially for his Eighth Symphony in C Minor. Although this is dedicated to the worldly ruler, Kaiser Franz Joseph I, Bruckner himself describes it as a “mystery”. Being as liturgical as it is prophetic and known to be among the most extensive of its kind, the interpretation of this work always poses a challenge. | ||

| Philharmonie: Großer Saal, Berlin, D10785 Berlin, Germany Sunday 21-Dec-08 Mahler 3 - Mehta The natural philosophers of the 19th century would have adored this work. As overwhelming as Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony is in its dimensions, as astounding it is in expressing the primordial experience of nature, which this piece focuses on. Perhaps it is not even going too far to describe the work itself as a natural phenomenon, one that widens the scope of the symphony by expanding its forms. Zubin Mehta stands on the Philharmoniker’s rostrum, a conductor with one of the longest affiliations with the orchestra. The team also includes other guests familiar to Scharoun’s concert hall: the alto Lioba Braun as well as the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the Tölzer Knabenchor. | ||
