This deeply moving and powerful work, written for the consecration of Coventry Cathedral after its destruction in the Second World War, remains as relevant today as ever. Semyon Bychkov conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra, massed choirs and a cast of superb soloists in a performance that marks Britten’s 100th anniversary year, on Remembrance Sunday in an iconic building whose association with remembrance goes back nearly a century. Mozart, of course, felt confident to give an answer with his heavenly, redemptive Requiem. Concertmaster David Stewart makes a meaningful contribution to the discussion as soloist in Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre, composed in Germany in the dark beginnings of WWII. | Carnegie Hall: Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, New York City, NY, New York City, NY, United States Sunday 2-Feb-14 02:00pm The English Concert Early-music specialist Harry Bicket returns to Carnegie Hall with The English Concert for the next installment in their Handel project—the rarely heard oratorio Theodora. Featuring some of the composer’s most glorious music, this tragic work depicts the self-sacrificial love between a Christian virgin and a Roman imperial bodyguard, sung here by vocal greats Dorothea Röschmann and David Daniels. This deeply moving oratorio serves as a timeless parable of spiritual resistance to tyranny and an indictment of persecution, topics that still resonate with audiences today. | Barbican Centre: Hall, London, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Feb-14 06:30pm Handel Theodora / The English Concert The performance finishes approximately 9.30pm For his penultimate and arguably his finest oratorio, Handel found a story from an unlikely source – a tale of martyrdom recounted by a scientist known for his Law of Thermodynamics rather than his literary skill. But the painful wisdom of Robert Boyle’s Theodora, who refused to renounce her beliefs and was executed with the soldier who betrayed his officers to protect her, drew from Handel some of the most heart-stopping music he would write. Stamped through Handel’s score is both the inspiring hope of love and the searing pain of injustice; music that is as much human as it is divine.
