| Auditorium Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Thursday 29-Aug-13 07:15pm Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Grafenegg has boasted well-known names from the very beginning. This evening, look forward to Anne-Sophie Mutter. The great violinist, who is an active promoter of contemporary music and has established a foundation for top new musical talents, was presented with the Ernst von Siemens music award in 2008 for her life’s work. Two years ago she first filled the audience in Grafenegg with enthusiasm. We are delighted to welcome her back with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Together they will perform Antonín Dvorák’s violin concerto. Then Manfred Honeck will conduct the US American orchestra playing Richard Strauss’ tone poem «Ein Heldenleben». | ||

| Wolkenturm, Grafenegg, Grafenegg, Austria Friday 30-Aug-13 07:15pm Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra The second evening with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under its Music Director Manfred Honeck takes us from Grafenegg to Russia. The young virtuoso Yuja Wang will interpret Tchaikovsky’s famous Piano Concerto No. 1. This is preceded by politically explosive material: in «Komarov’s Fall», Brett Dean commemorates the first cosmonaut, who died in space. The Soviet state apparatus risked a man’s life to celebrate Lenin’s anniversary. In an intelligent balancing act, Dmitri Shostakovich often expressed his critical stance vis-à-vis the powers that be in the form of music too, as, for example, in his Symphony No. 5. | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Thursday 12-Sep-13 08:00pm Rhythm Pure The keyword of this appearance of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck is “rhythm”. The first work on the programme is the concerto for percussion, “Conjurer”, by the American composer John Corigliano. The work is a highly transparent sound study, in which the virtuoso percussionist Martin Grubinger can be heard on more than 30 instruments. Fitting accompaniments to this piece are two compositions by Maurice Ravel, of which the second in particular, the worldfamous “Boléro”, owes its great success to its rhythm.
