From the dark turblulence of its opening, through the moving requiem-like central movement to its finale's optimism, Brahms's First Piano Concerto is one of his most powerful works played here by one of Britain's most loved pianists in his 70th birthday year. And there is the life-giving celebratory energy of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony - its ceaseless energy made Wagner famously declare it ''the apotheosis of the dance''.
